Title: HE rounds vs sherman
Post by: SPKmes on December 16, 2007, 04:09:35 PM
I hit a sherman 3 times with HE rounds 1 on the turret, 1 at junction of turret and base and i on the track all the same side and from view in a line down. he then turn spotted me and 1 shot 1 kill. does this sound right.I was in a panzer. Just asking no real issue would just be good to know for future reference.

What do you think "AP" stands for?

M4's can be hard to kill - have to watch deflection shots.  As a rule - AP rounds should be used for GV kills.  Save HE for soft targets like buildings and structures.

Generally, save the HEs for soft targets (M3s on the run, jeeps, planes, sheds), and use the AP rounds against armored vehicles.

if the m4 can take over 10 AP rounds from a tiger then you have no hope with HE rounds from a panzer. As others have said HE buildings AP on other gvs.

An M8 can take that many rounds if you're passing them through places where nothing important exists.

One 88mm AP round to a ShermanVC will kill it every time if you know where to hit it.

One 88mm round on a Sherman should stop it no matter where it hits

Some of my favorite kills when I'm just messing around in GV's is to get up on a hill and there is a tiger sitting in/by a town and you just lob HE down at it right beside him... tracked in a few shots then when someone finally gets him you get the kill... I get a good chuckle out of leaving tanks tracked or with dead engines. :)

SHOULD but doesnt always, ive hit one before 3 times in the side of the turret before from less then 500 out and then another hit on the front before he showed his rear and died.

Why the turrent ? Hit them in the side. Even in pzr 2 hits in side will usually do the job & if front on low down with 2.
In most cases you can get 2 rounds off before the Sherman even knows where you are or gets range on you.

SA is just as important in GV's. Don't attack until you are in a position to do so. Otherwise retreat & reposition yourself.

retreat wasnt an option nor was repositioning I was tracked. He was behind a hill and I took the only shot I could which happend to be in the side of the turret. Then he came over the hill and thats when I hit him in the front,he then turned to run and I got him before he could.

It can't be stressed enough - SHOT PLACEMENT!  If you know where to place your round, any GV can be taken out with 1 shot.  Even those annoying T34's can be taken out with 1 shot from a panzer.  Many times when I use M4's, I get called a cheat or "ASP has GOD TANKS!"....yea I wish.  Even though you think you have a perfect broad side shot, take your time and adjust for a possible deflection shot.  Many times I just rush through trees or around town, come up to any enemy GV point blank, be first to fire and....plink - DEFLECTION.....very sad, hang head in shame and take my punishment - BOOM I'm in the tower.   So remember shot placement in vital!
