I hope everyone is keeping up with NASA News.
An astroied called APOPHIS the size of 3 football feilds will do a Fly by in 2029, close enough to get within the earth gravatational pull, NASA says if this happens, APOPHIS will return in 2036 on a impact corse with earth.
APOPHIS is not big enough to be a Global Killer, but will still do massive damage where ever it hit.

Yeah I have heard about this, I know that in 2029 it's gonna come pretty close, I believe I heard it will pass about half way between us and the Moon which is very close for an asteroid to come. I'm sure if it does alter it's course to an Earth impact orbit we'll have several years to come up with a way to alter it's course so it wont hit. I've heard of a few ways they can do it, like attach solar sails to hit to push it to a new course, we can't nuke it though because then we'll just have alot of cuncks that will hit us, like a shotgun effect.

Bruce to the rescue!

NASA says that if they don't have anything built by 2013 that it will be to late to try and deflect it. It thats years to come up with new ideas, put it on paper, build it, test it meny meny times, just to see if it even works.

This is a Press Release from NASA
NASA 2036 forecast: Asteroid crash
Foreign delegates at the space expo at the 58th international astronautical congress in Hyderabad. (AFP)
New Delhi, Sept. 25: An asteroid three football fields wide might crash into Earth in 2036 seven years after whizzing past the planet closer than some satellites in orbit, a US space scientist said today.
If the asteroid named Apophis passes a specific, small region of space during its close fly-by in 2029, it will return to impact Earth in 2036, said William Ailor, director of the Centre for Orbital and Re-entry Studies with the Aerospace Corporation.
In this small region of space that scientists compare to a “keyhole”, Earth’s gravity will perturb the asteroid’s trajectory such that the subsequent encounter in 2036 would lead to an impact.
The chance of such an impact is currently predicted to be 1 in 45,000, Ailor said in a talk on Earth-threatening asteroids at the International Astronautical Congress, 2007, in Hyderabad.
“It’s not a civilisation-ender, but if it does strike, it’ll cause significant damage. People alive today — young people in schools and colleges — are going to see it go by or will have to deal with it,” Ailor told The Telegraph in an interview.
Further observations of Apophis in 2012 and 2013 will allow scientists to recalculate the chance of an impact.
“The probability of impact could go up or come down,” Ailor said.
In 2029, Apophis will get closer than some geostationary satellites parked about 37,000km above Earth. A realisation at that time that it will impact in seven years would give scientists too little time to prepare, Ailor said.
Space scientists have pencilled Armageddon-style missions to protect Earth from an incoming asteroid. But unlike in the 1998 film starring Bruce Willis and Liv Tyler, the options involve deflecting the asteroid rather than blowing it to smithereens.
A high-speed spacecraft may be crashed into the asteroid or a heavy spacecraft may be parked close to it so that it acts like a gravity tractor.
“Something to pull the asteroid away from Earth,” Ailor said.
Another option is to explode a nuclear device tens of metres above the asteroid so that the explosion boils away its surface and makes it change trajectory, he said.
But Ailor cautioned that it was still not clear how exactly asteroids would respond to such attempts at deflection because the composition of many asteroids is unknown and small asteroids tend to have irregular shapes.
The last major asteroid impact had occurred in 1908 over Tunguska in Siberia when a 50-metre-wide space rock levelled more than 2,000 square kilometres of a forest, an area larger than Washington DC.
Over the past eight years, a concerted search has helped find 90 per cent of the asteroids 1km and larger — the civilisation-killers. “But we have yet to find some 20,000 objects between 300 metres and 140 metres,” Ailor said.
“It’s not a case for panic, but we need preparations to nudge objects out of the way (should the need arise),” said Richard Kline, president of Klintech, a technical consulting company that organised Ailor’s talk at the 58th astronautical conference.
Ailor said the effort to push an asteroid out of a collision course would increase sharply with the passage of time. A longer wait would mean the need for a larger explosion or heavier or more spacecraft to deflect an incoming asteroid.
The reason is that the closer an asteroid gets to Earth, the bigger the momentum one would need to nudge it off the planet’s path.

More like tens of millions

What they need to do is send a drilling team up there...land on the asteroid, drill holes for nukes and then blow it up from the inside out.
Quite simple really.

What the hell is THIS thread doing in the O'Club???? It doesn't involve guns, cars, boobs, climate change, carpeted garages, hot tubs, politicts, Hillary, U.S. foreign policy, Euro-bashing, "Caption this", pizza-in-a-cup, or anything that's worth hijacking!!
Get it the **** out of here!

There is a plan in place.
There is a design for a spacecraft that could easily intercept the asteroid at a distant point...and using the asteroid's own gravitational pull, change it's trajectory a few degrees one way or another to totally miss earth.
The technology is already out there.

If this thing does hit earth, I don't think that anyone will be sitting on there duff playing AH, this means a great loss in income to HTC for meny years. Do the math, millions of people die in the strike zone that may or may not have thousands of AH players in it.

Lazs survived the big comet strike that ended the reign of the dinosaurs. On the subject, he mentioned that while it was a little too bright for normal sleep patterns, there was plenty to eat and not a great deal of competition for it. I'm not going to get too concerned about a possible impact until he does.

"I address you tonight not as the President of the United States, not as the leader of a country, but as a citizen of humanity. We are faced with the very gravest of challenges. The Bible calls this day Armageddon. The end of all things. And yet, for the first time, in the history of the planet a species has the technology to protect its own extinction. All of you praying with us need to know that everything that can be done to prevent this disaster is being called into service. The human thirst for excellence, knowledge, every step up the ladder of science, every adventurous reach into space, all of our combined modern technologies and imaginations, even the wars we’ve fought, have provided us the tools to wage this terrible battle. Through all the chaos that is our existence, through all the wrongs, and the discord, through all of the pains, and suffering, through all of our times, there is one thing that has nourished our souls and elevated our species above its origin, and that is our courage.
The dreams of an entire planet are focused tonight on those fourteen brave souls traveling into the heavens. May we all, citizens the world over, see these events through. God speed and good luck to you.

Question: what are we supposed to do with this info?
not many can do anything about these events, if they do transpire.
my guess, most will use the info to party like it is 2999. use it to get lucky etc.
some will continue with their normal routines and trust in a higher power.
some that can try to do something, will try.
in the end it boils down to this. I don't remember where I seen it or heard it but it makes alot of sense.
"If Mother Nature don't get you, Father Time will."
so make the best of what you do have and live your life as If Tomorrow Never Comes. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3JO_64NqK0)

I don't think HGpappy.BG has been around the O'Club much....
It takes a whole lot to get this bunch stirred up. Usually it's guns, boobs, or global climate change. Other than that, it's about impossible for them to be serious about anything....

Since it is apparently aimed right at St. Paul's Cathedral ( looking at the illustration ), it clearly must be coming from Hell.
And if not, then the British people sure must have done something to seriously piss off God big time.
At least it is not landing on top of the Vatican, or on Mecca. If either of those were destroyed by such an event, a lot of folks would become upset.

HTC is preparing us for it now.
It lands a continent away= lost UDP switching to TCP
[ your probably getting discoed [[going to expire]] but it will take awhile ]
It hits you= white screen and a error report.
[ game crashes[[ you die now]] and you find yourself up there or down below; and the gate keeper gets your 'error report' and chooses whether to let you in or not.]

OK, Lets do it this way then,
This first link is a list of (PHA) Potentially Hazardous Asteroids. Close Approaches To The Earth

And this is a list of (PHA) Potentially Hazardous Asteroids found after the discovery of Apophis. Apophis is about #600 or so on the list.

To top it off, NASA is not the trophy holder for the discovery, it was found by three avarage joe's, R. A. Tucker, D. J. Tholen and F. Bernardi
with alot of money and a very big telescope.

The real question is how does effect global warming and is the asteroid signed up under the kyoto protocol, while we're at it what are asteroids ccw laws?

I don't see what the big fuss is about. They said its going to land in the eastern hemisphere. I think we're all pretty safe in the western hemisphere. Maybe if we get lucky it will destroy China.

Chuck Norris could potentially hit Earth much sooner than the year 2036, and he will hit both hemispheres at once if he does. Now that's reason to panic.
-
hey Hudson fire
what would you suggest to avert the norris problem?
-
Simple. Don't **** with Chuck.
I suppose you could also mention to him that an asteroid is coming to (potentially) wipe out the earth, and snuff the "Walker, Texas Ranger" television program once and for all. This might be the ideal solution to both issues.
-
the earth survived chuck norris, it can handle a few pesky rocks travelling at 30,000 meters per second....pffft.
who cares if humans are wiped out? the earth will survive.

The Earth and moon are very old as we all know.... NOW that is. The moon however is barren making it easy to see many craters left by objects that have hit it. If we were to strip the earth of it's foliage we would be able to identify even more strikes than previously known. Erosion would still hide many but the most resent would be easily reviled for our scientists to locate. Will the Moon and Earth ever be targeted by asteroids again? You bet cha
Both the Earth and moon need to be protected. If the moon was to be hit by a devastating impact it could easily cause mass destruction on Earth as well. In saying that, I wonder if the moons orbit has ever been slightly changed by one of those impacts giving us the perfect orbit we now enjoy?
Off topic:I remember once when I was young, a guy asked me how big space was. I told him I learned in school it was infinite. He said; Well thats because we can only see so far and people are ignorant. He then asked; What if space was actually part of something microscopic? Would that then make it infinite?
Puzzling isn't it?
-
Sometime in 2028 we'll have a better idea what forces are needed and then all we need to do is alter the earth's gravitational force on the asteroid's first pass. We can do that by sending everyone in the world to one country. :aok

I just got off the phone with Leroy Jenkins WoW calulator dude....

we have a 37.333 repeating of course chance of survival.....which is better than.....well you know....

Regardless of the "facts", if this hits, it will be a helluva lot more than "8 times the force of Krakatoa". If it hits, the force of the impact will travel through the Earth, and to the opposite side. The force of both impact and the expended energy opposite the globe, would cause Earthquakes and tsunamis that would make all others seen by Man, look like Disney park rides.
Not to mention the cooling effect after impact. Global temperatures would lower slightly.
OTOH, it could be a Global Killer, if it hit the right spot on Earth.

I'm sure it's because they have public Health care and don't carry guns We all know Jesus hates the idea of taking care of the sick and poor. So I'm sure he's going to let the great Satan smash them.
