New Line Cinema has announced that Peter Jackson, responsible for the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, will be executive producing a new live-action adaptation of The Hobbit. No director at this time has been set. There will be two films made simultaneously in 2009 and scheduled for release in 2010 and 2011.
One will be an adaptation of The Hobbit itself. The second is an unnamed sequel, however early plans by Jackson prior to his lawsuit against New Line, suggested it may cover the events of the White Council that expelled Sauron from Dol Guldur in Mirkwood that occured simultaneously with the story proper. No word yet on whether this is is still the case.

Didnt all the hardcore book dorks hate the movies?
I agree it is good to hear though.

I'm not a "hardcore book dork", but I'm excited about it. LOTR movies are some of my favorites [the extended bersions that is].

I also am not a fan of the books and I didn't think that the movies were all that great either.

I agree it is good to hear though.
That goes for pretty much any book-turned-movie. LOTR, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Wizard of Oz, Hitchhiker's Guide, Da Vinci Code, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Interview With a Vampire, etc, etc, etc.

I'm a fan of the books and I loved the movies. The movies weren't 100% accurate according to the books and there was actually quite a bit left out. Even so, the basic story line was adhered to quite well and there were no major deviations from the books.
I look forward to seeing the Hobbit and the other movie.

Hardcore book fan with an understanding that making them work as movies required consessions.
And it's my favorite movie of all-time and one of the best ever made.

What Peter Jackson did to Lord of the Rings is akin to someone remaking Top Gun, and cutting out all the flying scenes.
Fellowship was pretty good, The Two Towers wasn't bad, and Return of the King was downright awful. I'm talking about the extended versions, too.
I'm not a LOTR Dork, but I do recognize that Jackson ****ed up really bad.

Never read the books, loved the movies....
I look forward to any Hobbit (mis)adventures on film :)

Your a rare Man Sax, most people never get past it not being as good.
Personaly I found the books to be so boring they were the BEST way to cure insomnia, and I think the movies were far better.

I've read the tolkien books and I think the movies do great justice to the novels.
Sure, they left out a few characters and scenes but hey... they have a time limit and the LOTRO series books were FILLED with background detail and backstories.
In fact, if hollywood had made the lotro movies as it was the books, wed've spent 20 minutes simply staring at the screen as a camera strolls by bilbo's house, stopping to stare in detail at a flower or blade of grass. YAWN!

They'd have had to hand out psycho-active drugs to get us through the Tom Bombadil scenes as well. :D
The LOTR books were incredibly difficult to get in to - took me three attempts. Once I did get going though, I couldn't put them down.
I thought the films were pretty good.

As a long time fan of the books, I was quite worried that the LOTR movies would ruin a great classic. But given the length and detail of the books, what Peter Jackson managed to produce, in spite of the Hollywood red tape he had to work with, is nothing short of amazing. He did the best he could and I think he pulled it off brilliantly.
I look forward to “The Hobbit” with great eagerness. And may Mr. Jackson prevail in his gorgeous row with the troll New line.
