I have been wondering how to make custom gunsights...could anyone help me??
-
Myself and USRanger have a lot of gunsights. The link is in my signature below, so just download that and you will have some more options. As far as editing you can just use MS Paint as well as a few others. I am not sure on all the basics 100%, it just takes some work and imagination...

thanks i like those

Many thanks for making these available, much appriciated. <

your gunsights are pretty awesome sketch, I did have to delete a few of them because they were broken gunsights but neverless they were pretty awesome to have.
-
Thanks Ranger and Sketch for posting them, I got the pack a long time ago as well and love them.
I would like to do some customizing to one of them but not able to for some reason. My paint prog does not seem to work right with it.
How can i erase some parts and add others?
Anyone know?
Is it a layer prob?
-
These sights are from a long time of collecting between Ranger and myself. If you want to edit them just use a basic program and erase what you don't want and save it. I have done it before and doesn't take too long to do. If you have any in specific let me know and I will see what I can do...
-
Thanks Sketch. I have edited one before but that was in 2001. it worked fine then but don't remeber what I did. I thought it was as you explained but does not work for me anymore fopr some reason.
My prob with erasing is that it erases both layers I guess. Thinking about it now, I believe i can fix that using paint bucket to fill it in. I downloaded this prog. called paint.net that I'm trying to learn and seems pretty good. Here's the LINK Paint.net (http://www.getpaint.net/) It's free
My other prob is trying to add stuff in. Seems the file is no good once I do that. Have renamed file and made sure it was a BMP file but no go yet. Just a big square on selection in AH and blank on sight screen once put in plane.
To make a new sight it seems you need 2 layers. One for the background and one for the sight itself. Trying to figure out how to do that. Have only had the prog for one day so it will take some time unless i got a hint.
Could also be that I'm trying to edit the old Pink background sights. maybe i should try one of the black ones.

Here (http://www.dasmuppets.com/gunsights/index.html) is one I made if you like the single dot type.

THERE IS ONLY ONE SIGHT ... The "Dot 'O Death" sight ...
Here are the sights that I use. They are alpha (illuminated) sights.
You place both the ???.bmp and ???_alpha.bmp into the HTC\Aces High II\sights directory and when choosing the sight in AH setup, you chose the ???.bmp
You might want to backup your \sights directory before making any changes.
Fighter: Carefull here because it is named "default". This should automatically change all plane gunsights to this sight without a lot of effort.
(http://pages.cthome.net/crzn22/AHGunsights/default.bmp) <- default.bmp
(http://pages.cthome.net/crzn22/AHGunsights/default_alpha.bmp) <- default_alpha.bmp.bmp
Jabo: For this sight I explicitly go into the AH setup and choose this one for all the planes that I use for JABO. The bottom dot is what I use to line up the bomb drop on. Usually try to get 45 degree angle on drop using the lower dot.
(http://pages.cthome.net/crzn22/AHGunsights/default2.bmp) <- default2.bmp
(http://pages.cthome.net/crzn22/AHGunsights/default2_alpha.bmp) <- default2_alpha.bmp.bmp
Credit here to Mitsu's buddy AERO. I took one of his sights and modified it.
-
is there one like the one Slap posted, that has a couple of dots? One for where the guns will hit at 200 with convergence at 200 and at 400 with convergence set to 200? Any other combination will do, this is just an example.

Between me and you..... How many times do you think we have posted those sights?:rofl If it is more than a dot it is too much!

I started working on some new sights last night. Probably gonna take a week or two, but I'd like to get 10-20 new sights finished & checked before release. Sketch was nice to mention me on the current package, but it was mainly his baby, so I figured I pump some more out and expand the selection for players to use & enjoy.
Sketch & anyone who's downloaded & used the pack. Anyone having trouble using the savefile link(1st trouble I've heard) can also use this link for the same pack.

Let me know if you need any help on those Ranger, just send me a PM. A bunch of guys just got back from being deployed so I actually have some free time... :D
-
Question: Is there away to make the in game sights the real historical ones? Where are they? How do you know which are the "real" ones for which plane? etc. etc.
Thank You'
-
The defaults are not the "historical" ones? I haven't used em for a long time, so I'm not sure.
Sketch, I'll send ya a couple at a time as I pump em out. I'll need help w/ testing.

You DO know you don't need the alpha when making a sight any more right?
colors with a black background (imaging merging them, but still 256k color) works now too...
there was a thread a few years back about it, search alpha and mitsu maybe, I use a green "dot o death" I made, and can do any color you'd like, size is variable, mine is pretty small, but you know the difference between a 64x64 and 256x256 sight and how they look in game.
Nevermind I did the search for yas :aok

Just tried it out. Yayyy no more messing with alphas!
-
the sight I use is one I made specifically for the jug using the .target command..
basically its a circle.. and with the 8 guns set at convergences from 350-425 anything thing that falls within the circle will be hit with at least one pair from point blank to 800.
a little odd, but works perfect for me.. I tend to "overaim".. if I put just a single dot,, I wont squeeze the trigger till i get the dot exactly on target, which robs me of shots, too conservative. the circle FORCES me to be less anal about my aiming, if any part of the plane is in the circle. FIRE!

After you download it, it will be where ever you saved it too. From there you will need to unzip it and place it in the HTC/Aces High II/Sights folder
Back up your others ones just incase you want those ones save how they are. :aok

JB, I put that sight in my pack when I made it up... was actually one of the first ones I place din there as it is a 'ledgend' :D So it should be in there for him if he needs it.

Yup ... I do/did know.
The sight(s) that I created before alpha blending still worked after alpha blending was implemented and as Sketch said ... anything larger than a dot just gets in the way.
So, for such a simple sight, I didn't see the need to recreate it using the alpha blending.
Here is what they look like ....

Where ever you run Aces High from.
Such as, C:\Program Files\HTC\AcesHighII\Sights
If you need to know where it is running from on your computer just right click the game icon on your desktop. properties and it wll show where it is running from.

How to make your own gunsight:
Locate the "sights" folder in your "program files/HTC/Aces High" folder or the location of where you installed aces high from. If you don't know this right click on your short cut and click properties. It will tell you the path.
Find the "sights" folder. Locate the "default.bmp" file. The is a bitmap file that any graphic editor can open such as photoshop, paint, paint shop pro etc.
Opent this file.
The default gunsight has a pink background and a white gunsight. It is 128x128 pixels.
Duplicate this file or save as a new name.
Draw guides over this file to locate the exact center of image. Use the current sight as a guide. Or you can make a new layer over the background and make it 50% transparent so you can see through it.
Usint the default sight as a guide to keep your new one exactly centered,
Begin to draw your new sight.
Save each version with a new name as a BMP. Make sure you are in "index color" and 8 bits per channel.
Copy them to your "sights" folder. The same place you found the default sight.
Your new sight will appear in the list of sights from your clipboard.
Some notes:
You can use a black background instead of the pink one.
You can pick any color to draw the gunsight with.
The size of your HUD in each plane is different. This is why the default sight will looks bigger or smaller on different planes.
You can make your "blank" sight 256x256 pixels. This helps making more intricate sights and makes it easier to draw.
You can vary the size of your sight to large or smaller within the 256x256 blank.
Your sight will be bigger or smaller depending on the size of the HUD
If the sight is bigger than the hud it will just get cut off on the edges but will still work.
Experiment with different sizes on your 256x256 blank.
After a few tries you will see how this effects final sight size on different planes.
The TXT files in the sights folder that are named after each plane are the files that hold the sight for that plane. To make the sight appear on any plane simply replace the sight name in this txt file with your new one. Or you can set this from the clipboard if you dont want to mess the the txt files.
To make it easier download some sight packs and use those as templates and modify them to suit your needs like changing the color or some other part that suits you.
Don't publish sight packs with sights you did not make yourself.

:rofl And why not.....
Some of these sights in the pack I put together are from years ago, like the one JB73 put together and the ones SlapShot did and also the Aero ones... Some if not most are not hosted anywhere else but by players who have been in this game for years such as myself and many others. What am I getting out of having a collection of gun sights and putting together a pack for players to use and choose from. Some like sights with lots of lines and sqiggles and the famous n00b Sight that has an arrow telling you where to shoot... Some just like a simple dot such as SlapShot and myself.
I make no money for this or the time and effort some of use do putting together sight packs, sound packs or skins for the game. The most I have gotten was a 'nice collection' comment or a pat on the back. Sorry for being nice to the Aces High Community. I guess we all better stop making Sound packs and sights and skins for the game....

Never have.... Just because it is labeled Sketch's Sights pack does not mean I said I made them. I have posted many times that this is a 'collection' from the years of playing. Never said I made them or claimed them. :p

Sketch, are you sure that 2 color sight in the 39Q is in the pack? I downloaded it back in June, and there's a sight that appears similar, in the Mixed Group Folder. It's labelled c205, but it doesn't appear to be exactly the same. Maybe I'm missing something here?

Think it is.... you talking about the one on the main page right? I will check and see. Ranger and I are working on some new sights as well as cleaning up some of these older ones. If I don't have the 39Q one I will see if I can find it and add it when he new sights pack is released.
EDIT: Hubs, I just checked and I think it is the C205 (Thick) sight. In the pack it is red, and it is also similar (not exact) to the 'half circle2' sight, but without the center lower line. I will try doing some work this week and see if I can get something close if you want? Just let me know...
-
Yep, the sight in the 39Q screenshots.
It looks different though, the way the lines fade. More like Aero's Revi's than the simpler sights in the Mixed group folder. I can't really explain it clearly, bit cloudy on Vicodin atm, but if you look at them, in game and out, I think you'll see what I'm getting at.

At this point though, I've got sights from multiple packs and some customized sights I've made, so I'm not really sure what was whose, or if I've deleted a bunch of dupes or different versions of sights. Ah well, no biggie.
:rofl I had to read that about 3 times before my brain computed it :rofl
You have to figure there are about 350 or so sights out there and that doesn't include individual ones people have made so there multiple versions of a sight that was made 6 or 7 years ago till now. Will be cool to see them 5 years from now. As for me, I will probably still be using SlapShots! :lol

I just downloaded Sketch's sights, they're marvelous Sketch!

Sketch,
I meant don't claim sights you did not make as your own.
By making some sights yourself and then adding a few/all from another site pack you did not make and then republishing it as "yourname site pack" you are stealing other peoples work. This is what I meant.
If you want to republish other older site packs from your extensive collection that is fine and is helpful to others as well. Just make sure you indicate somehow either by folder name or file name that you did not make them and better yet give the original author the credit and keep his pack together with all his original files that came with it. Perhaps including an email address, game name or any other proper information in a text file along with the site pack. I would call it "credits.txt"
If you dont have any information about the original author then state so and make it clear they are from your archive and you dont know who made them.
I added that statement for the benifit of new people who want make their own sites and perhaps publish them. Wasnt directed at you or anyone else.
This rule should be followed for everyting that is custom created in this game or otherwise. Including maps, screen shots, films, and skins...etc.

I am not gonna start a pissing match with you on this... I never said these were mine. If you have a beef about this pack with me then PM and don't drag this crap public. It gets old with people jumping in here and busting peoples chops about petty stuff like this. What do I get out of this? Nothing! I make no money or profit from it. I zipped all the sights I had one day and e-mailed it to someone. Then another person asked and then another. Figured it would be easier to just put it in my signature block for all to use... for free!! But maybe I will make you happy and make little blocks and do all the research and find out who made each sight so that they don't get mad at me. I didn't see JB73 crying with his sight in there, and he made that like 4 years ago, Hell the guy was honored to see it still being used!! You know why, because it is a good feeling to know your helping out people. You posted up how to make them, good on you and I you for that. But, you better go through and let everyone else in this game that does not work for HTC, as far as films, sights, screen shots, sound packs and skins (the first four I have done and am working on skinning) that they better make sure they name the originator. A lot of these sights are from a long time ago and most of those people don't even fly anymore. I respect them and put this out there to help new players, but about 80% of those sights have just been around a long time. I will go work on that last 20% just for you so you get a warm fuzzy....
A lot of people work hard on films, such as USRanger, BNasty, Yanksfan and myself. Long hours of editing and getting the timing right for each clip and going through hours upon hours of footage.
A lot of people also do sound packs such as Mitsu, Fruda and Waffle. All who made some of the best ever in this game. They are the originators of sound packs that myself, Ranger and TwinBoom have done and you know what. I didn't have Waffle beating down my door telling me I could not use them. All it is is a collection that has been changed and stuff added and taken away to make something new and fresh for the community.
Guys like Fester, Krusty, Greebo as well as countless others have made skins for this game. Man, I wish I didn't have so many choices to choose from... gee, glad thay put something out there for us ALL to use as a community. Now, I know most of those skins started from where? HTC created them. Now I know some have been done by scratch (I believe Fester does hisown rivets and such who also posted a very fine tutorial on it!) and some have even written up how to do a skin straight and simple, such as Krusty, who has helpe dme out on many occasions with stuff... for free! Fester asked for one sheep but whose counting...
All these guys will be remembered for these things they have done and I am done ranting to you about it... I have no beef with you, but please be civil on this and think before you accuse me of 'taking' away so to speak the original creators work of the subject at hand. I didn't say I made them, I just said it is my collection that I have got over the many years of flying sim games, no more, no less. :aok
-
sketch, I will agree with the others here...
I looked at your sights pack just now, and wow, theres 11 sights I have made in there, along with tons by Aero, Waffle and others...
It'd be nice to get a tiny bit of credit for work done, no matter how long ago.
in the next few weeks if I have time I plan on re-doing all the sights I made if people like / use them, he sights can be fun for some, like the thread I posted today:
http://forums.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=225897
My sights, I don't condone or say I use them, but I spent the time making them, and don't want that time to be wasted. Just saying when I left a sight pack out there to DL I labeled the folders "waffle's sights" and so on, and in the post credited Areo AND Mitsu not only for the additive style solution they proposed to HTC, but also their work on it.
honestly if it weren't for those 2 we might not have any quality custom sights in the game, they are the pioneers, and lead the way for most others, including an HTC employee Waffle.
as for skins, in game it credits the maker, like my 190 d9 skin....
I just wanted to say this.

hub that sight wasn't in his groups last I saw... the original I made is in the new thread I made, the blue / fade to purple with the lines and all... it varies on system to system how it shows, but i assure you that is the only version of it I made.

I am fine with how you handled this JB, and I respect you for that. I know of a few sights and yes, those who did make those sights deserve credit. I know of a few that you made, but not all of them so it is hard to tell who gets the initial credit. The way Agent types out a post and then publicly stones me at the end with his comment is what set me off. A PM or something similar would have been nice but instead he acts as if I don't respect the history of these sights and the individuals who made them.
Trust me I respect the work done on those... but not ones have I taken credit for these sights. All it is is a collection. Kind of like baseball cards, die cast planes or such... I didn't make those cards or planes, but have just collected them. I have nothing more to say to Agent about this because of the way he approached it. He might as well have walked to my house and punched me in the face. As for you JB and respect what you said on this and yes when it is redone it will be something more than it was. But that fact of the matter is it started out just e-mailing to folks because they were looking for sights. I hosted it up so it was easy for others to get. Nothing more, nothing less...
:aok

Sketch ... I can't believe the crap your getting.
Create a README.TXT file with names of those who contributed to your "collection" and include it in your ZIP file. No need to try and figure out who did what and label it, unless you really want to do it.
If you get any more crap on it ... take the link down ... I wouldn't blame you if you did.
And to keep in line with the thought ... then every "soundpack" out there had better follow suit. Unless the author of a soundpack changed every single sound ... then they can't claim it as their soundpack.
Same applies to the skins ... the exported "base" skin that everybody uses to create a new skin should give credit to Waffle, Nate, and any other HTC artist that created the "base" skin. Unless you start with a "blank" page and do it all yourself ... then you can't claim it as yours.
If we are gonna "sweat the small stuff", then lets be consistent.
-
WOW!!!!!!
Sketch...you took my post totally the wrong way. I have never looked at your site pack. Don't know anything about it.
I just included the "Don't publish sight packs with sights you did not make yourself" statement for new people who might start making sights. And it didnt mean someone shouldn't re publish/host other site packs. It was just a simple informative statement for people who don't know.
My second post WAS NOT directed at YOU. I should have written it all in third person. My use of the word"you" was meant to describe the "public at large" not YOU as in "sketch".
And I was trying to clarify the first post's statement by further explanation.
You have taken my post as an attack on you. This is totally incorrect.
I posted directions on how to make sights and included the afore mentioned statement for completness.
There must have been something else in this thread about credit that I missed. Perhaps this is why you thought it was directed at you.
I stand by my statements about credit. If the author is unknown one should indicate that as opposed to taking credit. I do not know if you have done this or not and I don't even care if you did. It is irrelevent to any of my posts.
As a proffessional photographer and graphic artist I am sensitive to this issue as I catch people who steal my work all the time and even worse will publish my photos and claim credit for it. I despise this behavior. So it was only natural for me to make a statement about this issue.
I apoligize for disrupting this thread as it should be about making gun sights and not purse fighting.
Salute Sketch for all your hard work on sights and making them available to everyone.
Please carry on with the thread as I consider this a closed issue.
I need to re write the post in third person but I can't edit it now.
S!
-
I have to clarify my statement also...
I looked at your sights pack just now, and wow, theres 11 sights I have made in there
I'm more amazed they are still floating around, some of those really stink...

To SlapShot: Yeah it is already in the works and will be on there with the new package. Might even see if JB73 will help me out with some...
So, JB73, if I need any help would it be possible for me to call on you?
And as for your sights... It wouldn't matter how crappy they look... I still can't hit anything!
Agent360...
For you come back say what you did and direct it like an actual individual, let alone a grown up most likely with kids I accept you as someone I could actually get along with. I am sorry for any words of how I took it... I guess it gets old seeing guys getting called hacks, cheaters, cable pullers, shade-boy, ho-monkey, ace pilot (is that one word or two), along with multiple other names from people who don't understand the game. I am not saying your one of them because from your last response I can see you can have an actual conversation like an adult. People come in here and go on about so and so doing this and that and oh let me post up a film of him flying into my plane! The crap gets old and as of late some people I wonder even if they should have kids...
Sorry for going off on you... and to make a common interest with you, I went to school for graphic design as well before I joined the Air Force. Now I build bombs for a living... because art and explosives are some much alike! :t So, when I see something I created and someone else slaughters it, I see what you were saying. That is why I said, it is just a collection, and not 'my' creations.
So... I humbly apologize and hope it is accepted from you.

Sketch,
Apologie accepted. S!
I have recently made these two site for use in my 109 flying but I have a problem I can't solve. Mabey you guys can help.
I have added some yellow dashes to help in straffing GV's and ack. My normal sight does not have these but I thought these might help in aiming with bullet drop on the 30mm taters the K4 and G14 have plust the 250lb bomb.
I ride with my seat all the way up vertically with the center of my sight just at the top of my hud. Just enough to still see the center dot. So the "Normal site" with some dashed added is this:
This is the second sight to illustrate what I want the final version too look like when I have my seat moved up to the top.
I can'figure out how to make the sight so that when I move my seat up I still get the yellow dased lines to extend all the way down to the bottom of the hud.
The second one does not work because the aim point is located in the center of the image.
The first one works but when I move the seat up I dont get yellow lines extending to the bottom of the hud.
Any Idea on how to make this site work?
Thanks

Agent, I don't know if you will be able to get it to have the dashes like hat for when you move your head up. It is a fixed location for your 'center' point on the screen, but I could be wrong on that... see if JB might know something on that.
What if you just made the sight large... would they still show up at say double what the standard sight is currently in the game? I think would be 256x256... but still not sure as that would cause your center to be larger as well.... Would be cool if it could be done. The sights look good so far...

Agent360 ... I don't think that it is possible. You are actually moving your line of sight in reference to the glass hud and not actually moving the displayed image.

the sight will always re-size and center on view.
the only reason some sights go all the way to the edge of the reflector glass is they have a colored pixel on the edge of the image and the game just repeats that pixel outwards.
as for size, like I said the game resizes them. 64x64, 128x128, 256x256, 512x512 whatever you use the overall size will stay the same. the reason for using a larger sight is for more total detail in the sight.
try using some of those 32x32 or 64x64 sights in your pack. you see the pixels in game.
the best advise I can give is trial and error. thats what I did.
