At first the Luftwaffe ignored our high flying Fighter Sweeps... So 'Circus' operations were introduced, in which we escorted a dozen Blenheim bombers to short range targets in France in the hope the Luftwaffe would oppose this daylight effrontery... The advantage of surprise usually lay with the enemy and the first thing we knew of their prescence was when they bored in with a fast slanting attack from six o'clock high...'
