i assume you are referring to the 8800 cards; one will be sufficient. for two you will need at least a 750w PSU. 500w min on the single.

You're only going to see about a 5% increase in performance (if that) by SLI'ing the two graphics cards together.  You're also most likely going to need to shell out more $$$ on a better power supply.

Definitely not a very good bang for the buck.  You'll be better off spending that extra money on a faster processor, or more ram.

Do NOT get the older generation Geforce8800's!!!!!!!!

The new 8800GTS is a 512Mb card where older had 640Mb. The new card is at least 40% faster than the 640mb card.

You can get a 8800GT for half the price of GTS640Mb and still get a faster card! Do not buy the older generation 8800.

I am building a faster computer. the computer store guy wanted me to to buy a 8800GT that was DX10 ready for $89.  Is this probably one of the old generation ones at that price?

It was suggested, by Skuzzy, that a nvidia 7600GT card would fit my budget, Less then $200 for video card.

any suggestions?

There is no such thing as a 8800GT for $89.  Unless its stolen or something.  8800GT's run $250 on the average.  That $89 card is probably a 8500 or 8600GT.  Which I would avoid like the plague.

This is always a good article for find the best video card for your budget, AGP or PCI-E.  A new article comes out every month.  So you can wait for the January article but I don't think much will change.
http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/12/03/best_graphics_card/

There is no $200 card, only a 180 and 220 recommended.  The $180 card is as follows:

EST PCIe CARD FOR ~$180
Radeon 3850
Codename:    RV670
Process:    55nm
Universal Shaders:    320
Texture Units:    16
ROPs:    16
Memory Bus:    256-bit
Core Speed MHz:    670
Memory Speed MHz:    833 (1666 effective)
DirectX / Shader Model    DX 10 / SM 4.0

The Radeon 3850 brings us something we've been begging for ever since the DirectX 10 cards were introduced: a sub-$200 card with performance comparable to the high-end products. The Radeon 3850 delivers Geforce 8800 GTS 320mb performance for more than $100 less.

If you're looking to get the best possible performance for the dollar, this card hits the sweet spot.

I just paid $250 bucks for a radeon 3870 ddr4. Hope I didn't overpay too much. I needed it fast though. It is sweet though.
