Title: --Homemade Cockpit picture thread--please post yours---
Post by: miraj on December 26, 2007, 10:17:21 AM
It seems that more of these are popping up , and I am always looking for ideas for improvement .
So please , if you have one , post some pics.I would love to see what others are up to.
If you know of a really nice one , share the images.

I'll start with mine , built last Feb. , the only changes have been minor adjustments in the seat position , and a cupholder.Mine is located in my study , so it does not interfere with daily life around the house, but is still considered a nice piece of furniture.

Here is a nice one I found , it looks like it used for driving more than flying. Cool!!

Another , with a cat , very cozy.

Here is a nice one , great gauges, needs a larger monitor.

Whoa! this cant be home made , but it is neat.

An old picture of mine (before the canopy frame was completed)...
http://www.edbert.net/images/simpit/simpit-2002%20(1).JPG

Several more pictures can be found here:
http://www.edbert/net/109pit.htm

If anyone lives in Texas and would like to give this pit a good home contact me, using edbert at gmail and we'll talk :D

(yeah I'm getting too old and lazy to climb in and out, guess the thing needs a relief tube too)

I built up an "open cockpit" a few years back for to allow for the use of projector instead of a monitor:

It's comfortable, converts to driving and flying games, and it breaks down into components with just an allen wrench for easy transport.

Yeah, it's ugly homemade furniture, says my wife, but at least it made the "furniture" classification!

What size projection would give a true 1:1 life size image?

I have a 62 inch rear projection TV that will soon be obsolite for the family entertainment center (going with either LCD or plasma)
Will I be able to use the rear projection TV?

Probably less than 4 foot monitor, corner to corner. Projectors will definetly oversize it.

Well, it depends on how you feel about large pixels.

Most older rear projection TVs (and I have one) can display 640x480 very sharply but with HUGE blocky pixels, or 800x600 with a little fuzzyness but smaller pixels that aren't so blocky.

So, what you'd need is a video card that output s-video (best) and a tv that accepts s-video inputs. Then you'd want to set the video driver to use the highest anti-aliasing mode possible, and set the resolution to whatever your TV would support. Set the refresh rate to 60 or so.

You might find the text buffer or gauges hard to read, but maybe you'd find it acceptable.

But it definitely can be done.

The S video connection is there on the TV.  At present I have a XFX 7900 GT 256 video card that doesn't have an S video but I hope to upgrade that this spring.

Or just get a projector that can do 1280X1024 or better, like this (only a 72" screen):

Component would be best, but I am not sure what the DIP switch is for and it says it only works with listed ATI cards-

Silly man.
So you chuckle at her responce then build one anyway.
whats the worst shes going ot do to you? Not put out?

If your like most married men.
shes stopped doing that anyway.
So what are you really loosing?

Next worst thing is she leaves.
Now I ask you.
Is this really a bad thing?
Are you really going to miss the wife ack which always seems to come when your in the middle of the best fights?

The only other thing she can do is stop talking to you.
Again this is a win for you. No more wife ack.

Anyway you slice it. Its a win for you.
I say go for it.

Actually Im thinking of making one with a canopy that closes and I can lock from the inside.
Put my headphones on and Ill be impervious to anything but the house catching on fire.

 --Steps on Spouse Approval ---
 1. Tell her you will actually spend LESS time playing the game , because the experience is more fullfilling and complete.

 a. All this is done in the name of efficiency and time managment.:aok
 b. This equals more time to spend with her.

 2. You could also find a game she likes , or that the kids like.

  a. "Honey we can also play Playstation in my cockpit."
  b.  Mine uses a massage chair , good for your back and hers.

 3. It is actually less expensive than most other hobbies.

  a. cheaper than a red sportscar/motorcycle/bass boat.
  b. If you can drive it-fly it-or fu#* it , simulate it!

After seeing that dentists chair my brain wouldn't shut off and I just kept thinking about it and how I would do something like that. Down to the point where I was looking for chairs like that on ebay or anywhere else I could think of but with little success and those I did find were to expencive for the little extra cash I have. Then it hit me, the front seats in my 89 suburban would make a perfect chair for something like this. Comfortable, high back and fully adjustable. (not that I plan on ripping the seat out of my suburban)

I started trying to draw up plans on paper but it looked like something my kids could have done and then I remembered I have a 3D modleing program and this is what has poped out of my head so far.
Every thing would be mounted to a thin platform allowing for all wires to be routed from the tower by the seat, through it and out of sight. The monitor would be mounted on a sliding tray allowing for smaller monitors to be pulled closer to the seat. the stick and throttle would be mounted much like I have them now but with extra space on each side for the mouse and a cup holder. :)  And of course the 4 speaker towers and the sub under the seat. I havn't quite figured out how I want to mount my keyboard yet so I can move it in and out of position but I have a couple ideas.

I thought about adding more shelvs to it as this would replace my desk and I would need places to stow all the junk on it.:D But for now I just worked on the bare minimum to save on how much this would cost.  I probably could get more elaberate but at this time I'm just thinking of comfort and usability.

The problem with that design is two-fold: 1. the weight of the architecture and 2. the footprint.  Also, might have some rigidity issues with the floor platform, depending on thickness of the material.

I would suggest lightweight tubing in a cage design acting as a mounting frame, instead of a flat platform.

I don't exactly see what the problems are... I don't mind something heavy at all so thats not a problem... And whats that about a footprint? Size?

I guess just a general calrification of what you think these issues are would be nice.
Also as far as the flat platform I figure if there are any issues with it I'll just screw it to the floor.. No risk of damaging my wood floor there, My wife does it all the time being almost 300 pounds and crushing all my platform chairs into the floor then draging them across it scraping off the nice finish I just put on them and down into the wood.
When I can get rid of her then I'll worry about the condition of my floor. :D

Oh and Jolly if and when I manage to get one built and it turnes out looking good Ill send you some pics and let you know how much it cost :)
