20FG/79FS "Droop Snoot" upper right is the one Jager went by

The 20FG/79FS by Jager [my favorite P-38 Skin :D]
Well, I was in the Snapshot tonight for the second frame where we got to fly P38's and when the decision arose for a skin type I suggested the 20FG/79FS by Jager skin & this caused a debate on the historical accuracy this skin had.
I have read few of cammo & markings fro WWII books and remember seeing a black skin for nighttime surveillance.
Here are some pix of a black P-38's

I did read this thread dated back in '05. -> P-38 (http://forums.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=148811)
So are we using the right skin?
-
I don't know if it is right, most say it is not. I know the squadron is wrong. I love the skin though.

The 38 in the background is NOT a droop snoot. It's a recce F5 Lightning in recce blue...not black.
It has nothing to do with the 20th FG P38J that Jager murdered with that black skin.
The black 38 you show is a modified P38L that was raced postwar. it is not a wartime bird.
The only black 38s you'd find would be night fighter 2 seat P38Ms.
We don't have one of those :)

Just to clarify on Betsy.
She was NOT a droop snoot. They stripped the paint off the OD nose, put a white band on it and polished to silver to give the impression of a Droop snoot. This was to protect the real droop snoot's by making all 38s look that way.
Again, Betsy was an OD/Gray 79th FS, 20th FG P38J. There were no black
20th FG p38s.
Betsy from the first thread. Just cause the black and white photo looks dark, doesn't make it black :)
Note no Japanese kill markings. Also note the other kill markings not present on the black version done by Jager
You can see the demarcation line between the OD and Gray. You can also see the BLACK scoreboard on the OD below the cockpit. If the plane is black how can that possibly show up darker?

Awesome information sir.
Can we have this plane revised so that her historical accuracy is, well... accurate?? Sometime this coming year? After all we are supposed to have historical skins in this game are we not?

I did a search before I started this thread and did not see that one.
I disagree w/ getting rid of the Betsy VI but revising it would seem to be in order . Well, I guess in a way it would be removed.

There are three other accurately done 20th Fighter Group P38J skins in the game including Art Heiden's done by Widewing, Jack Ilfrey's done by Oboe and which are natural metal and "California Cutie" which is D-Day striped OD/Gray.
All are quality skins. The black, inaccurate 20th FG skin doesn't belong with those at all.
-
I vote for Oboe or Fester to redo this skin :)
-
Joedog, I have pictures of orange and yellow F6Fs. Would those be ok? We could do one up in VF-31 codes and patches. We could put some German and RAF kill markings on the side too.
-
I'f they are going to "redo" it or replace it with another 20th J, I'd suggest a pre-March '44 one since we have two bare-metal ones and a D-Day one. pre-march it would be plain OD/Gray with no Droop Snoot decoy markings or yellow noses. Would still be 20th, but aside from the code it would work for any ETO 'Chin Lightning' before they were given Group colors.
I would suggest Either Jeanne (which has sharks teeth), Black Barney or My Dad/'Til we Meet Again. All are distict and signifigant aircraft, and the latter two are generic enough (aside from the noseart) to represent any of the 8th AAF P-38 Groups of the period.

BTW, thats James Morris, the pilot of My Dad and the top P-38 ace of the ETO with Black Barney. It was actually Lt. Col. Barton Russel's plane.

I'll attempt "My Dad", but others are more than welcome to do it as well, because mine probably won't turn out so great.
