Hey all... I just installed an 8600GTS in my computer. Every time I install the drivers, and then decide to log off however long later, the drivers dont 'stick' or something and it wont read the card (so I cant play... well, anything). I checked device manager, and the results are a bit strange...
It says,
Device type: Display adaptors
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
PCI Slot 11 (PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0)
This device cannot start. (code 10)
Basically, Ill log on, load the drivers, everything works fine, log off, and nothing works.
Thanks in advance,

did you uninstall the old drivers first??
NOT
-
Yep. I un-installed every peice of ATI software on my hardrive.

Did you plug in the power to the video card?

If he didn't, the system wouldn't start.
-
Not true, the video card will operate just at lower settings...it will still run.

Never heard of them working that way, but I'll take your word for it.

LOL!
No, I actually didnt at first. But, it wouldnt start(like OOZ said). Then I plugged it in and installed the drivers... and now we have this problem. I just installed drivers from the NVIDIA website, Ill see if that works.

Don't trust the uninstall function on the old drivers. Search for and download "Driver Cleaner Pro" -- it's quite handy. It will remove the registry entries associated with vid card drivers as well as the drivers themselves, and removes the files from the HD so they can't interfere with new drivers. It's safe and free.
THEN install the 8600 drivers and try again.
That's my best suggestion.

The drivers I downloaded from NVIDIA's website are working fine. Not sure what was wrong with the ones on the disc.
-
One rule of thumb is to throw out the disk within minutes of touching it and get the recommended drivers off the website.
-
You might think so, OOZ, but not with the latest nVidia cards. For example, for the longest time the drivers on my 7600GTS's CD-ROM were the best by a long shot for it. For a while they were the ONLY ones for it.
For 8800s and the like, drivers are even more finicky.
Used to be the rule (throw the disc out) but now, I'd hold onto it just in case.

Had the exact same problem Motherland with the same card. The system didn't seem to load the drivers correctly or uninstall them correctly either.
I used a regestry cleaner and it cleaned out an old driver peice and immediately the video improved. Also some some similar issues about it on some other bbs.
Keep those old drivers. I tried the newer ones and they didn't work with AH.
Where is the best site to download Driver Cleaner Pro?

I think I got mine from guru3d.com.

The new ones work fine for me... Im running 1280X960, 1024 res, maxed out object detail and ground detail range, with a smooth 59-60 fps.

You get it working? If so good for you. I gave up on mine and purchased a new ati 3870 card. I found that the power was insufficient to run the card since the card had no direct power supply. I'm still not sure if the new card will work. Took it for a very short spin and had no problems. Right now I am defragging. That disk was a mess.
