A friend's friend took the following pics at Fleet Week in San Francisco.
Check out the pics of the low pass the F-18 makes through the midst of the sailboats. (The low-pass pics start about half way through the set.) Those folks got a bit of a surprise, I think. :) The F-18 looks like it's going close to supersonic (judging from the shockwaves) at about 30' altitude right through the area where the sailboats were watching the show.

Love the low pass pics...shock wave distortions are very, very nice!

That was awesome!:O

very nice pictures thanks for sharing

I've been to airshows where there were fighter jets flying around. It is impressive when they go zinging by at near supersonic speed even when they are quite a distance from the stands. They come streaking in, all the noise trailing behind; then as they pass, the sound slams into you. It is quite an experience.
When I look at those pics, there are two things that I note. First is how close the F-18 is during its high-speed pass. That would make it all the more impressive for a spectator. Second is that (because it is the stealth pass) there are many people who don't know it's coming and are turned the other way. I'm not sure I can adequately imagine how it would be to have a near-supersonic F-18 sneak up on you from behind at that range. :)
Also, if you look at the shockwave pics, the shockwave off the bottom of the plane is what is causing the white shockwave in the water. Very cool.

Some kind of shutter speed to catch a chopper blade without blur...amazing.

Sneak Passes !!!!!! :aok

cool pics.. Number 5 was LOW!!! good thing no sail boats strayed in front of him.
-
Awesome :O :O :O

I am suprised that the Angels would get that low with boats in close like that. That is a once in a lifetime photo shoot. Great pics
Funny how A fighter jock in a F-105 was almost drummed out of the AF for doing a supersonic pass over a MIG base in Nam, but we can see passes like this. I love seeing this on camera and support it but we live in a crazy world.

Those are amazing pictures. I can't imagine the amount of money you spent on your camera equipment, but it was worth every penny.
Thanks so much for sharing. What a beautiful place to have an airshow.

Those were some of the best airshow pics I have ever seen!

Its more fun to actually WATCH (http://youtube.com/watch?v=iRGacDGUGtE&feature=related) it and listen.
Spectacular!

Over a MIG base? Wouldn't that be considered attacking the enemy by virtue of blowing out their windows?

You bet ya! If you have ever seen a Thud in full burner it was the fastest to mach one in the inventory at that time. It was against the ROE during the early days to approach the base. Not until the onset of aggressive bombings in the north did the ROE change. Very frustrating for the USAF, Marines, and Navy.

Oh man! And the vids that folks posted above are awesome as well!
Thanks, guys!

And I was there to see it this year.. Bwhahahaha!

F/A-18 can't do Mach 1 under 10,000 feet. Engines aren't powerful enough.

Phenomenal shots Wonderful job!

I don't think it's supersonic -- just close (as judged by shockwaves off the airframe). I don't think those happen until the plane is going fast enough that air over parts of the airframe is supersonic (same cause as compressibility).
-
Yeah, its not supersonic. All kinds of neat little things happen in the transonic regime though.

Coolest low passes I've ever seen was while working/living in the Highlands Scotland. Watching Tornados making runs through the valleys from a hill top was a great experience. Especially during average weather.
Once watched a Tornado scream over one ridge line, followed by a A10 who rolled over inverted at the top and dropped down, though that was very cool.
Took a Scotish girl on a date to the highlands for a picnic, she wondered why we had to ride (battered old GS550) so far instead of just going local. Didn't take long for her to get it.. :D
Ah, the cold war days..

this thread demands a detailed list of your camera specs.
-
Aqua shrimp you are wrong. The F-18 most certainly will do mach 1 (and better) under 10K. I have been in them at speeds over Mach 1 at very low altitude. It is a Mach 1.8 aircraft. The engines are plenty potent.
The reason you don't see aircraft go supersonic at airshows is because it is against regs and hazardous to the spectators. A sonic boom is very loud (loud enough to shatter windows etc). I would hazard a guess and say most here have never heard a sonic boom.
Great pics and vids here btw.
cheers,
RTR

I've heard a sonic boom before. It was on 9/11 two planes took off out of Wright Pat I believe to escort Air Force One. Was one of the loudest things I have ever heard. Some of the neighbors car alarms went off up and down the street from the noise.

This isn't true.
Speed of sound is dependent of the current air pressure but is normally around 340m/s. Several sources list F/A-18's top speed at ground level as 361m/s.
