Title: Tom Landry
Post by: Udie on February 14, 2000, 02:55:00 PM
Hey guys I was just listening to my evil right wing conspiracy radio show here in Houston.  The host, Mike Richards, has been talking about Tom Landry. Mr. Landry was on his state senatorial campain back in the early 80's.

They were giving a short history of his life, and one of the things he did as a 20 yr. old was pilot a B17 on 30 combat missions in Europe. He even had to crash land once.  I had NO idea that he had done this in his past.  Thought you guys might find that interesting...

Oddly enough..

We have a German Ace living in Surrey B.C. Canada. Last year i was watching the news and they where interviewing him. He was the only Axis pilot awarded a Medal by the U.S. Government.

He was an Me109 pilot,he had just made a few passes at a B17 and the 17 started going down. As he came up to it 6 with speed he could see the damage to the rear gunner compartment.

As he put it (The rear gunner compartment was gone, all i could see was blood everywhere. I could see what was left of the gunner slummped over. But the blood was everywhere)

The B17 was low and in bad shape, he stay on its six just looking at the damage. After 4 or 5 minutes he pulled up beside the b17 and waved it to go,then disengaged.

With all the kills he had,not once did he see the results of his cannons. This had been the first time he had seen what 1 person had done to another.

When i saw this on the News i thought to myself, damn i fly JG26 in WB and if i could get him on a computer id like to see his comment on the 109G6 & 109G6R6..

Landry Story from me.

One night about 12 years or so ago I was training a rookie cop.  We went to Ball's hamburgers at Midway and Northwest Highway to eat.  Great burgers and they have t.v.'s all over showing sports.

So we are sitting there in uniform and this grandmother and her granddaughter and grandson are sitting at another booth.  I tell the rookie to look at the regal grandmother and grandkids.  REAL unusual statement from me. Dont think I ever made a comment like that before or since.

The grandmother looked like what you want all grandmothers to look like. Just a queen. The two grandkids looked like a prince and princess.  Just beautiful and well mannered kids.  Of course I had no idea who they were.

After a minute a guy walks over dressed in a jogging suit. Very non-descript.  Totally non-flashy etc. No hat  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

He sits with them and is obviously the grand-dad, but with a humble and nice bearing.  I looked at him a few minutes (actually they were in a booth, my table faced them).  I told the rookie, that guy looks almost exactly like Tom Landry. Rookie turns and looks a few mintues.

He said, that IS Tom Landry. I figured it was so because his house was near there off Northwest Hwy.

Anyway after they finished supper and all they got up to leave. He looked my way, waved and smiled very nicely.  I said "Hi Coach Landry." He walked over chatted a moment and was just so nice.

The family watched smiling and I was bold enough to ask him if he would autograph a page on my "whip-out book" cops carry in their shirt pocket.  He was pleased to do so, exchanged a few more pleasantries and left.

Class act.  His wife was a class act and his grandkids were class.  Salute to a fine man we in Dallas Fort Worth will miss.

I've always rooted against the Cowboys but you gotta respect Landry.  When he left, the class went out of that organization like a deflated balloon.  Wish there were more like him - we need leaders like that.

Udie, you can bet your bottom dollar that if Laundry wasn't a conservative, the media would have covered his B17 missions and his sacrifices of WW2 extremely well...didn't hear a thing about it in the press up here in WASH. state.

Sad isn't it  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)  I think H. Ross Perot didn't get that giant sucking sound right.  The sound was all the class going out of the dallas cowboys after landry was fired...
