Title: Ability to destroy Early Warning Radar
Post by: Spikes on December 30, 2007, 12:11:30 PM
Ok, so when you enter the radar ring, the base flashes...

I wish we had the ability to destroy the EWR. Even make it so it needs 5K of ord dropped on it. Anything...

How about it is under the radar in a bomb-proof cave...You can destroy the Radar with bullets, but it will take 5,000lbs to kill the EWR, so when you enter the radar ring the base does not flash.

I don't see the EWR as a device, but more of a representation of human spotting.  Someone may just see your plane and radio in that there is a raid inbound.  So I'm not sure exactly how you would destroy that.

My real issue with this is two fold.  First, you are going to set it off just trying to get to it, and the disappearance of radar would be a big clue that something is going on anyway.  Second, i think that removing it would lead to a ton of base sneaking missions.  I question its negative affect on game play.

Also, doesn't damaging the HQ do this anyway?

Killing the HQ gets rid of bar-dar and dot-dar, but the bases still flash

No, it does not. But I agree with everything else you said.

Maybe even damage it do it would not go off until the planes got closer to the base?

It's not an actual radar.  It's representative of people in the field, be it soldiers or civilians, calling into the air field that air planes are inbound.

There is nothing that can change this other than "To win their hearts and minds" or a Scorched earth policy.

I didn't know of a person being able to see 10 miles and identify the plane type, country etc.

:p

Ahh well...it was a thought.

What I meant by that was, if it was friendly or enemy. Enemy makes the base flash, friendly doesn't. ;)

Every major combatant had a trained network of observers for such purposes. It's not that it had been farmers calling some airbase "there is, uh, something in the uh, air,.. somehwere.. I think" :)

Other than avoiding any sort of fight, how would this improve the game?

If that is the goal, may I suggest Microsoft Flight Simulator instead?
