Should the good guy always win? I mean come one, all of you at one time or another wanted the bad guy to win
-
my childhood walt-disney mind washing has forced me to answer, yes, the good guy SHOULD always win. ;)
-
no way Jose ~ I always want the bad guy to lose.
-
The good guy should lose sometimes, it makes for a better story, if you ask me.
I tend to lean away from stories with set good/bad guys, they're usually more interesting. Because alot of the time the line between good and bad is really, really hard to see.
Ignoring that.
I mean, really, if the good guy always won, then the HO would never work... But then, nothing else would either, and we'd all be flying planes with more armor than an IL2, made out of plotanium and diamond. And be firing peas from out guns. (And the Zero would STILL catch fire, and P-38 pilots would STILL get Pilot wounds.)

Good is either arbitrary, or universal.
Nothing happens otherwise than it was meant to, that's the universal sense of 'good'. It's good (in the impartial, universal sense) to see the good (arbitrary) guy loose, because it is more credible in an all-considering perspective.

I guess it depends.
If its a story told in several episodes (like a tv series or a planned multi-sequel movie / book) I've found it to be better if the good guys lose as part of their character development.
characters that always win make bland heroes imo.
I remember watching LEXX and following KAI's story.. perfect template for the hero yet in the end he and his people lost and perished..and he himself was turned into a ghoulish assassin that commited atrocities for thousands of years.
yet he 'a good guy' in the LEXX story.
THAT is character development :)

The end for the "good guys" in Cabin Fever was excellent.
-
Agree Moot. And that scene with the dog in the shed was pretty intense.
On the original question, I think it makes for a more complex and less predictable movie/show/story if it's not a given that the good guy wins.
-
i think it's better when there are no good/bad guys, just guys, like in Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.

I love it when the bad guy wins! I guess it's because I was a bad guy for many many years. :noid
I was a big fan of the Elm Street series Freddy's Nightmares simply because Freddie usually won:aok

And that concludes the list of witnesses for the defense.
