for christmas i bought a better vid card Nividia GeForce 7600 gt over the ATI 9200 that i had and i added on a gig of memory (1.5 gig now) and the game is running alot better, i dont notice any better graphics but the frame rates went from 20 or below to 30-50+ and the small hangups or freezes are gone too. (it must not all been from my dial up connection speed)

A squaddie had similar problems with freezing and stuttering. It's not all your connection.
He was running with only 480mb of ram. Upgrading him to 1gb made all his stuttering and freezing go away...
And he's on dial-up!
