Title: Temptation Resistance
Post by: Halo on January 03, 2008, 12:59:52 PM
You heard it here first: the economy is heading for a drastic slowdown.  I browsed the new year sales and did NOT buy either a larger computer monitor or a digital camera with a 10x telephoto.

They were neat, but I didn't NEED them.  However, when I have to replace either item, I'll be back to my usual consumer boosterism.

Have you resisted any optional temptation yet this year?  Or are you an easy sale.

(I didn't buy a yacht or an airplane either, but those are so beyond reach they don't count.)

It was really really difficult for me not to buy a new PC.  However there is a 50/50 chance my company is going to be bought and go private in the next 3 months and things are too uncertain.

That said.  My car will be paid off in April so that $300/month burning a hole in my pocket might be spent at tigerdirect.com.  That is unless the Mrs. finds it first.

I would bet that Mrs Mickey not only has already found it, she has already made plans for it;  This information has not been passed on to you yet because you do not have the necessary clearance and the time is not right...

The only "consumer" products we bought were PSP's for the boys. Damn, those things are like a miniature computer/Ipod/Video Game/Movie Player/Radio all wrapped up in one nice little package.  Everything works as advertised too.

Other than that, I don't want to tell you how much we've spent on home improvements since Nov. 4th (Inground spa, upgraded kitchen, upgraded living room...)

I succumbed to temptation and built myself a new computer.

With 4 gigs of RAM, 1 terabyte raid array and Nvidia 8600GTS, HL2 Episode 2 looks gorgeous at 1680 x 1050 on my new 22" wide screen monitor.

Hey, I waited a long time for it.  I deserve it right?  Yeah, that's what I tell myself anyway.

save money for what? i already have a stockpile of lead to line my bunker with and i have never much liked my bank manager.

what ever happened to the age when all a man needed to feel complete was a bag of coins, a good meal and his own sense of freedom to feel succesful?

As for the economy, I personally suspect that we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg,,, that we are in for a significant recession. I'm out of the market, besides some undeveloped land and gold.

If you guys' have just now figured out that we're in a recession, and that things' are slow, You might be shocked to find out it's gonna get worse.

Oil's starting to sell for over $100, Home Repo's are at their highest since the great depression, inflation is steadily climbing (ahead of wages, I might add,) and the stock market's been steadily slipping backwards for the last 3 months....

it's that important to us.  We're a patriotic family, more than half of the men are veterans (all Navy!), Dad's an Annapolis grad, Granddad's buried in Arlington 3 graves over from Renee Gagnon (look him up), got an Uncle there as well.  We love this country, most importantly the ideals this country was founded on, and it's those ideals that we signed up to defend.  Not a particular political agenda, rather the ideals set forth in the DoI and the Constitution.  We took an oath to defend the Constitution, from enemies foreign AND domestic.  In a way, that's what we feel we're doing now.  Even if Paul loses we're sending a message.  It's worth it to us, it's that important.

I don't care much about feeling successful, I do like accomplishment.

I've quit smoking and will drop my Satelite TV in 10 days to save money to buy a cabin eventually. My Car will be paid off in June. There's 2 hundred bucks I can use. As far as computers etc. I built one a couple of months a go and that urge has been satisfied. I want a flat panel tv but I am holding off for the cabin.

This is what I am saving: Stop Smoking $120 / Mo
                                         Satelite TV      $ 45 / Mo
Car Paid off   $200 / Mo

                                          Total              $365/Mo

Anyway that's a start.

Odd, my business has tripled since January last year. All of my customers' businesses have grown steadily in gross and net.

If this is "getting worse", I can't wait for it to be really good.

I use to have a lever action 22 remington. Loved that gun. Had to sell about 30 years ago when I was layed off from work. Really regret selling it and the 20 guage remington auto. Sweet gun.

I remodeled my bathroom this year. That was some bucks. It was nasty. I'll try to post some before and after pictures. I still have to put up some towel racks and touch up the paint just a wee bit. It is beautiful now. I sometimes just stand in the doorway just staring at it. Kitchen may be next.

We just bought a new to us Jeep Cherokee Laredo. High mileage but it runs very well and reliably. I bought it from a friend who has had it for a couple years. Next week I'll see about getting our trailer modified so that we can hitch the Jeep up behind it and tow it with us. I also just topped off with 50 gallons of biodiesel. It was cheaper than regular low sulfur fuel. We still plan to travel to see grandkids and maybe make it up to the far NW this year. We do not fear the future we will continue to live as we wish.

Aren't all guns pretty much the same?  I mean, once you have 2 or 3 you will have pretty much all bases covered...

One that fires fast.

A small one.

One that shoots shotgun shells.

Wouldnt you be better off buying a solar panel for your house to reduce your energy consumption, or spending that money on a charity or something?

That's pretty much like saying all a mechanic needs is a screw driver, adjustable wrench and a hammer. There are different tools for different tasks and the same goes for a firearms collection. Now if you have your money I'd like to suggest you spend it in a manner YOU wish to do so. In the mean time why don't you refrain from trying to tell others how they should spend their money. After all, it's their money and life, not yours.

I don't care if the economy is going into the tank. Now is the time to upgrade some firearms in the household and get ready to have some guns to pass on to my two boys when they are old enough to have their own.

Not holding off just upgrading a little bit with the long guns this spring. This one will be the first out of the bag.

Beretta Tikka T3 Hunter .270

Then I will be buying this one in the summer and will get it in the 30TC caliber.

http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/icon.php

Then I am going to start saving up for something that I doubt I will ever need in my lifetime..... Hell I don't think I can even get enough saved for it since it will be over $13,000 just for the gun.

Yes, but infuriates' many of the O'club posters, because we feel that if we were to try the same thing, we would run into a PNG. For thing's like Hijacking the thread, and so on.

I'm not saying that Furbie's not funny (I've seen some great stuff in other threads, in GD) It's just that in here, the discussion's become more heated, and passionate.

Sometimes, when you think comedic relief is needed, All it does is to exasperate a discussion into a flame-fest.

(I myself understood the nature of his intent...and i'm not putting him out for it; It's that some others' might....)

Since WW2, the economy has averaged 57 month growth cycles, with recessions/slow periods in between--70's...sucked (but the gas thing was previously unheard of...ground-shaking change to economy there, +..Carter handled it poorly, other than letting the price of fuel float) in 82-83, economy FINALLY took off...tapered off end of 80's...went great throughout most of 90's, last quarter or 2 under Clinton it tanked...has been going great guns since '02-03 or so, NOW starting to tail off. It's predictable, just like senate hearings into gas-price gouging every spring:huh

surprisingly for me i found that the GD forum has alot of childish bullying by people who cannot help but be social parasites, as well as alot of good interactions. the O'club for me has never really seemed to be a harsh environment and much more mature audience who can have heated debates and not let it affect relations when agreements cannot be found. for the most part anyhow. the GD forum by contrast seems to spew endless hate and conceive life long grudges. heh.

long and the short of it is that you cannot make someone take something seriously if they dont have the interest. true it is sometimes cruel to make jokes around a subject that another person may be deeply offended by in some instances....but its not like we are talking about peoples wives or children its just another gun thread.

I didn't even intend anyone else to reply, i was just having some fun with lazs (i am his illegitimate love child don't you know?).  I thought who does he hate most - gun haters and eco warriors, then threw in the charity bit for good measure.

My comment aimed at lazs was so ridiculous that i didn't expect anyone but lazs to even acknowledge it.

He knows that one can never have too many guns.   You can be too skinny or too rich but you simply can't have too many guns.

And... I probly will get solar panels on the house I build out in the sticks so that I don't have to interact with all you nanny butthole busybodies any more than I have to.

Why would anyone want to discuss anything with you when you don't discuss???????

Feel up to it????:rofl :rofl :rofl

YOUR METHODS OF COMMUNICATION IMHO ARE A SORRY EXCUSE FOR WHAT LOOKS TO ME LIKE A NEED TO BE ABUSIVE!

I've noticed what I call a serious tendency to NOT discuss, but to do you best to irritate and insult,  in the majority of your post.

SEEMS like you have some BIG desire to be a SOMEBODY on the BBS?

If that be the case then IMHO you miss that aim BADLY!
