There's a Veyron video goin around... he hits .. 230 or 240 MPH... really amazing stuff.

The driver is a brave soul, more brave than I.  I've been a tad over 200....once. Anything over 140-150 and I get nervous, to be honest.

I blew a rad hose at 130 and sprayed the windshield w/ fluid and some came into the cockpit(windows down and top off)... a little in my eyes.  For a sec or two I was having trouble seeing.. narrow two lane road at night. I think a little drop of pee came out.

Anyway, the guy in the veyron is narrating the entire time and while he does get a bit excited, he stays pretty collected.

Guess what car is this :)
(clue... scheduled to release in mid 2008 in north america)

This car weighs 4,000 lbs and similarly priced as the Corvette Z06.
But how in the world does this car outperform Porsche turbo, Z06, Viper, Audi R8, and other cars 4x the price in all aspects except pure top speed without putting the driver in mortal danger when pushed to the limit?  ;)

It's an 05 now ;)

Oh, and I don't have much hair left to mullet anyway :D

The Veyron got beat for highest speed, and it wasn't too hard.  It's got all that luxury ballast.  It's also been beat in engine output.

Thats pretty fast for a guy nicknamed "Captain Slow" by his co-hosts for his practical and meticulous driving habits.  I bet Jeremy Clarkson was a bit jealous he didn't get the segment.

Top Gear has to be the best car show EVER put on television.

When I go to hell they will probly make me drive a minivan.

Most kids in ricers who pull up next to my big block el camino either give me the thumbs up or pretend they don't see (or hear) me.

The guys who always want to race are the turbo whatevers on the freeway.

You know, that's funny, Lazs, since just recently I had to undergo shopping for another car.

My Wife was talking all about an SUV or a Minivan. Guess what we drove home?

a 2007 Dodge R/T Charger (Yes, it's gotta Hemi.)

And she likes it more than the SUV we test-drove.

You know, no matter how crappy a day I've had, and I've had quite a few in the last 8 months, when I get in the Z, turn the key and hear that LS1 fire up it cures all of my worries.

My wife wants an SSR.  Badly.  I can't imagine what it's going to be like when we go out for groceries or out to eat.  "Shall we take the SSR or the Z?"  Don't matter, it's win/win all the way as far as I can tell.

Those Chargers seem like fine cars but their drivers almost always want to race.  I dunno why they feel the need to get smoked(if I'm in the mood)

That, in essence, is why I elected to go into another car payment, and not settle for a people box. There was a salesman at one lot we went to. He was trying to show us how roomy an SUV was. He wanted us to take it for a test drive. I told him "Nah, I've already got a pickup." And turned on my heel and left.

We did look at a couple of 300C's, and a Lincoln LS, But the Charger fit's all three of my boys comfortably, plus any luggage on trips.

I will say, It's not the kind of Charger they built in the '60's. This thing is more like a Mercedes. Plus that, It's Heavy (4100+lbs.) So I don't believe it's the best way to take advantage of it's motor. Chrysler needs to put that engine and Transmission in something about 500-800 lbs. lighter.

Heh, in a way it IS a Mercedes.  Being that Daimler bought Chrylser and the just sold it late last year.  So there is some M-B in that car.

I think so-It's got a 5-speed, with the Mercedes-style shifter (Pull it into Drive, wiggle left to downshift, wiggle right to go up.)

Having grown up on simple autos and stick shifts, I don't understand what this is.  What does it do by going to the left or right?

To a different set of automatic gears?  Or does it force the automatic to downshift to the next gear down?

Picture it as a manual trans without needing to use the clutch.

Does it still shift itself up and down?  Or do you need to do all of the shifting yourself?
Title: Automobile Forums most popular questions
Post by: DiabloTX on January 04, 2008, 03:12:15 PM
No, your input determines what gear is selected.  I.E. pull the gearshift left and it shifts down and push the gearshift right and it upshifts.  The transmission however is computer controlled and won't let the gear shift into a speed that it can't handle.  So while you are choosing the gears manually without the clutch the trans computer has final say-so in if it gets selected or not.  Mopar calls it Autostick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autostick).

The 6 speed manual in the new Dodge p/u's is indeed a Mercedes transmission. The automatic is made by Aisin.
