BuNo 17740 of VMF-214.
17740 was a significantly cleaner aircraft than 17883. There's still some fading and chipping of the paint, but nothing to the extent of 883.

At some point, 740 had her port outer wing assembly replaced by one from an older aircraft. For certain, the underside of the wing still carried the older roundel. I can't find a photograph of the upper wing surface, however it's not unlikely that the upper wing would have the older roundel, as well.

The outer port wing shows more fading than the starboard. Also, the photo I have indicates that only the right wing's fuel tank was taped. I'm unsure whether the fueslage was taped or not.

Showing the two roundels on the under-wing surface. As previously noted, 740 was a much cleaner aircraft than 883.

Nice work, but the nose looks too clean.
Doesn't the F4U have engine cowl flaps ? and if so, wouldn't a little more shading, along with some oil staining under them give the nose more of a 3D effect ?
-
Slapshot,
As noted in the post, this bird is actually rather clean. Granted the picture I have was for a publicity photo but it appears that the area around the cowling doesn't show much of anything in the way of staining. Certainly not the white underside, which would show more.

OK ... so much for the staining, I understand ... what about shadowing tho to make those cowls pop off the nose a little bit ?
Don't get me wrong ... it looks beautiful ... just trying to help.
