Having always been a car and Gun guy, I have been around others for years.
There is a portion of both communities that give their cars girl names. It has always seemed odd to me.
On cars I was always uncomfortable with it, and I always just called my GTO the goat. But never a chick name. I just call the Jeep, the Jeep.
Guns seems even odder to me.
I was always told by my father a gun was just another tool. You treat it with the respect it deserves as a dangerous tool, but it was still just that. Giving them female names just seems odd.
It also gets you an immediate funny looks from non gun types. I never want to give a bad impression to a non gun type that has not made their mind up yet, because if you come off like a nut, ( as far to many of us do) that will immediately sway the person to the anti gun side if that’s all they have seen. If you come off more normal you will more likely get the person to keep an open mind and try it out, I have never had a person I took shooting not like it.
I have had people back out from shooting because they felt really uncomfortable around one of the others shooters.
So why do or don’t you name these items?

I've heard in New Zealand, "Goat" IS a girl's name.
:noid
As for your question, no, I've never named my cars either.
-
i name everything, i call my car, "the car", i call my boat, "the boat", as in "lets take the boat out today" and "i have to get tires for the car".
-
My .45 is Pearl.
I got the name from The Beverly Hillbillies when Granny was hurt and wanted put out of her misery she turned to Jethro's mother and said "Sing to me Pearl!"

I have heard that as well.
I was pretty into the goat, but I never thought of it that way.
:D

I name my boats. However, I always refer to cars and guns as "Her".
-
I talk to my Jeep, but it doesn't really have a name. I do use female pronouns for her, though.
I use female pronouns for guns, too, but I don't talk to them or name them.

We (my father and I) call the old beatup pickup we use on the mountain for hauling wood "Bertha". The little Ford Explorer we bought last summer as another beater is "Betty" (2 of the 3 Butt Sisters). My .270 is "my girl" and my 12 guage is "the blunderbust". I had a Jeep Commanche that has sinced died that I used to call "The Grey Ghost" (it was faded silver in color). I guess I kinda name stuff :)
-
I've called my cars' all kinds of things. But when I was trying to restab the Trans in my old mustang after changing a clutch, I remember simply calling it "Sonovu*****!" :lol
-
I'm not into naming vehicles and guns either with the one exception of boats. Boats are always named, they historically have always been named, and that seems normal to me.
I found it strange when an aquaintance of mine asked me about my scooter and was I having fun with "her". I told him I didn't make love to machines but that I did enjoy riding "it" quite a bit. My wife, however, refers to the scooter as " a outra" which means "the other one" refering to the scooter as a female rival.
I find it a bit strange to name inanimate objects with the above exception, boats.

Naming boats seems to be standard practice, and I've heard it's bad luck if you don't do so. Guns and cars I've never named.
-
I will name a car when it's earned it. My '68 Cougar goes by the name Christine. Not because she runs around trying to kill people, but because she runs around trying to kill ME.
-
I named my truck “Black Bear” ten years ago, it’s since been shortened to “Bear”… I’ve also named 2 of my guns. A .50cal Hatfield flintlock rifle I named “Moses” after Hoses Hatfield. And an 1864 Springfield .58cal musket I named “Jebediah” but it is usually just referred to as “Jeb”.

car = bimmer
pickup = the dodge
explorer = the white thing

My GTO is named Katie. After I girl I knew in college. There is a story behind the name, I just don't feel like sharing it.

Inspiration comes when...You pinch your hand in between the bellhousing and the transmission flange trying to get the damn thing stabbed at 10:30 PM on a 40-degree night.

:rofl I often get weird looks from the uninitiated crew on the boat I skipper.
"C'mon baby! Push a little higher!"
"Don't do this to me baby!"
"There it is! That's the spot!"
"MY MAGNIFICENT DICK! That's how you make it fly baby!"
Only the last one is spoken really loud.

Hmmm... I thought you might have called it the Steelermobile.

This reminds me of how some people name their genitals. That is just a bit too too cutesy. It probably is an attempt to distract participants from the seriousness of joining forces.
Besides, I consider my genitals an integral part of me and do not look favorably on any body part toying with separate identity.
Come to think of it, not even sure whether genitals are singular or plural. Don't much care long as he/she/it/they function as expected.
Can we spell thread h i j a c k ? :lol
Oh all right, the topic: Although I haven't previously bestowed names on things on me or around the house or area, one exception has emerged in recent years: the Garvin Nuvi 350, Jill, for our favorite voice on the GPS navigator.

Rip, how is that thing? I was thinking about getting one, I see them all the time. My wife is a die hard Toyota fan (that is all she has ever owned). It took a lot to get her into a Pontiac.
I see you doing some off roading there, but how does it handle the off road stuff? I have heard mixed reviews. I have been interested in getting one for sometime now. It is a good looking truck.

I've always felt a little strange towards people who give proper names to their cars. It's ... awkward to me. weird
That said, we sometimes refer to the family van as the mommy mobile since it's out only kid hauler.
My work vans I call.... vans.
my pickup is the Dakota.
The vette is.... the vette. Although Stacy sometimes calls it: That squealing moneypit.
-
I always thought naming cars was a chick thing or rather gay.

nope.. shortened up their given names a little.. "the elky" or "the Healey" but everyone does that to the same cars.
guns.. I did name the 340 PD in .357 "the noisy cricket" as a joke.. you would have to shoot it to understand.

I don't even use my wife's name. "Woman, get me a beer". One of these days she won't accidentally pour it on me.

Stick with Sheep. Goats are dangerous, it's natural for them to buck the mother in the udder when the milk stops.

I had a Smith and Wesson Model 19 .357 magnum 6 inch barrell, named it "Boomer". My friends called it a mini-cannon.
-
I call my car "DayWalker" (as in the Blade movies), just because it looks decidedly out of place in the daylight and most of our clubs cars are given names to distinguish them from each other. We do all have black M******s after all.
Never named a gun. Thats just creepy.

i name my laptops betty.
i am on betty5.
