Comcast promising ultra-fast Internet
"We're about innovation and having the best network," Chief Executive Brian Roberts told The Associated Press in a preview of his speech at the Consumer Electronics show on Tuesday.
Roberts is expected to demonstrate a technology that delivers up to 160 megabits of data per second: It will allow him to download a high-definition copy of "Batman Begins" in four minutes. The technology, DOCSIS 3.0, will start rolling out this year.
"If it's as successful as we hope, in 2009 and beyond we will have it available in millions of homes," he said....
.....Roberts said Comcast will be creating "superservers" to store the extra video-on-demand content and supplement those in the neighborhood that move shows and movies to customers' cable boxes.
When a customer wants to watch a show that's not stored in the regional server, the computer will dial into the national server to access the content and bring it to the home, Roberts said.
These national servers will enable Comcast to offer 6,000 movies on demand -- 3,000 of them in high-definition -- without requiring customers to get a new cable box.....

But at what price?
I was happy as hell and just as eager to tell comcast to shove their service when FIOS came around.
For far too long they were the only game in town.
And arrogantly acted that way.
I'll never forget the phone call to them when I canceled my subscription.
when Asked why I told them I was getting more channels, on more TVs plus internet.Plus phone service with unlimited long distance. for $35 less per month then I was getting with Comcast with premium channels on only one set and basic on my other three and internet.
"Well we can give you the same deal" the man said
Me - "Well if you couldnt have given me the same deal you should have offered it to me BEFORE I decided to go somewhere else."
I know alot of people in my area were also sick of Comcasts games.
Judging from the amount of Verizon Trucks I see in front of peoples houses.
Comcast has lost at least half their business just within a 5 block radius.
And Im not seeing them just running lines on the poles. But to the homes.
Trust me. Whatever it is Comcast is comming out with. It wont be cheap

I don't think this is JUST comcast. ATT is rumored to be doing something like this as well. In addition they plan to centralize your DVR system and allow every box in the house access what's stored on it.

I loved my Time Warner. 5 years of service and can think of only once instance where service went out. Comcast bought the TW assets in Houston and my bill, for all the same services, went from 105 a month to almost 180, internet and broadband. Dropped Comcrap and went to AT&T.

Verizon Fios does that already, its called multi room DVR. you can watch a recorded show on up to 2 tv's (with the standard stb) at the same time.
Verizon is also replacing all the b-pon cards (pon = passive optical network) with G- pon cards for even greater speed . Currently b-pon cards can do about 60/mps. the cards are "split" providing service to 32 customers. the newer G-pon cards will do 100+ /mps
verizon also currently offers almost 10,000 titles in their VOD library.
The cable companys are trying to play catchup now both with services and with price bundles. Their coax thats been in the ground for 20+ years wont be able to handle the increase bandwidth without replacement, that will equal increase operating costs that will eventually be passed onto consumers
We had comedycast here in outside of Dallas when they and TimeWeener made the deal to switch areas as part of an agreement after buying a 3rd provider bad service went even further south in a hurry. everyday wehn school let out or on weekends when the kiddies would get online I could literally hear my bandwidth being sucked away since cable "shares" bandwidth with the neighborhood.
Now with FIos im a happy camper with 15/15 /mps If averyone in DFW was on the fiber run to just my house it would only be about 12-15% capacity. Verizon has LOTS of room to grow and some of the advanced stuff I have seen being tested lately and due for deployment this year alone will blow cable the rest of the way out of the water

Will be doing the same..... TW (roadrunner) I had one issue in 8 years and it was fixed quick. Since the Comcrap takeover.... internet drops alot and is iffy........ much slower now than it was with TW considering the poor connection.

But wait.. I thought the whole reason behind the cable companies needing to do away with Net Neutrality was because they didn't have enough bandwidth to go around.
