Overall, I understand the concept, how they are calculated, what they are for, etc. I just can't seem to grasp the difference between using ENY or OBJ as part of the equation. When is ENY used and when is OBJ used?

ENY is used when shooting other players, OBJ when destroying objects (bombing a factory or a VH for example).
-
ENY - When one country gets an overwhelming advantage in numbers over the other two countries. ENY will stop them from flying "good" planes such as La-7's and Spit16's. ENY really does not affect perks except for keeping you from flying them.
Example: Bish - 134 Nits - 98 Rooks - 95, Bish would have an Min-ENY that will prevent them from flying "good" planes.
NOTE: # In-Flight does not affect ENY, it's how many are on that country currently whether in-flight, in-tower, or afk.
OBJ - OBJ just tells you what plane/vehicle will get you the must perks for destroying objects (buildings, ammo factories, etc etc).
Example: A plane with OBJ of 5 won't get you as many perks for destroying a town building as a plane with an OBJ of 20.

Yes, I sure did. In fact, that is the information that stemmed my question. ;) It doesn't clearly state what Lusche stated below. I suppose it could be implied, but I don't like to assume things.
Thanks Lusche for the clarification.

Thanks to Lusche and Fmjnax.
I never knew what anyone was talking about when they mentioned ENY but never had the marbles to ask on the BBS. Thanks fmj for having them to ask.

Wrong. ENY was first introduced as a way of calculating perks. The ENY restrictions on planes were introduced later as a means of balancing play in the arenas.
From a post I made in the Bug Reports forum under the topic "Lost Points":
The higher ENY plane you fly and the lower ENY plane you shoot down the more perks you get.
For instance, shooting down a Spit XVI with a Spit XVI and landing gets you about 1.25 perks. Shooting down a Spit XVI with a Hurricane MkI and dying gets you about 11 perks.
These numbers are dependant on a number of factors beyond simple ENY and are meant only to illustrate the point but learning to fly the more difficult planes has it's rewards.

I have also noticed when membership numbers are reduced in the arenas EW or MW when I capture a field, sometimes my perk points are something like 1.85 for the capture, other times it will be 40 or more. I capture fields a lot solo, even with a few opponents on. And also it is true fightin other stuff. Like pinball I like it when I have perk bonus to play with and don't squander the opportunity.
This game is a lot like chess where strategy is useful and sneaky stealth attacks or wait 'em out tactics prove useful. Is that blinking base really a glitch or somebody hiding and waiting? Bug out in the grass and if you don't land successful, bet somebody is out there waitin.
More difficult planes? I am gettin used to flying the higher eny planes so not to be bothered by the hassle of not flyin what I want at the lower numbers. That Studka can take out a cruiser in one pass.
Guys whine about being sneaky. But surprise has always been a useful tactic in war.

I was explaining ENY as in Min-ENY for a country, not plane ENY. That was my fault, forgot about the ENY for planes :o .

Perks are the thing you desperately want when you dont have them, and never use once you do.
