Anyone watch this documentary by John Landis on HBO? I laughed, I cried, I slapped a Jew. But seriously folks (and Skuzzy), this is a profile in greatness. Don Rickles (a WW2 vet, BTW) is THE funny man of the 20th century. If you were'nt insulted by Rickles, you were'nt with it.
I've watched this doc at least 10 times and I want to watch it again. Nobody else could insult Ronald Reagan at his inauguration and leave him rolling with tears of joy. I owe my sense of humor to him.
I still remember every single clip they show from The Tonight Show when I watched them as a kid. Blacks can tell Black jokes, Jews can tell Jew jokes, Mexicans can tell Mexican jokes and they can get away with it. Rickles? Rickles can rip any ethnicity, any culture to the core and leave them feeling honored and wanting more.
If you have'nt seen it or experienced the greatness that is Don Rickles, I highly reccomend checking it out.... you schmucks!

I watched that show also RPM. One of my favorite things I remember about Don Rickles was that years ago I watched that show on Johnny Carson where Rickles broke that cigarette case of Johnny's that he kept on his desk. I also watched live the next time Carson came on and discovered that his case was broken and Carson was mad and went over to where
Rickels was taping his show and Carson barged in and demanded an explanation from Rickles. Hilarious comedy.

Hehehe Rip, you have no idea how close I came to using that!!!
Rondar, I also remember watching that live. I had never seen anyone "pull back the curtain" of a shows production that way. No way was that staged. Carson was genuinely pissed. I still remember the tears streaming down my cheeks and hyperventilating while literally rolling in the floor laughing ******* my bellybutton off. Possibly the funniest bit ever on "live" TV.
Thank God he never made it as a serious actor. The world would have been cheated out of many, many hardcore bellylaughs. The clips of him on the Dean Martin Roasts with Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Jack Benny, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Freddie Prinze and other icons of Hollywood are sheer genius. Nobody else on the face of the planet could have pulled that off.

Rickles is one of the absolute alltime greats.
thats how I knew the Comedy Channels " top 100 comedians was bogus. when Cris Rock ranked higher then the likes of Rickles. Or another all time gread, Buddy Hacket
Cris Rock isnt even in the same league as Rickles.

Upon finding a land mine....
Crapgame: Hey! Hey hey hey! I found one!
Big Joe (played by Telly Savalas): What kind is it?
Crapgame: (pause) "the kind that blows up! How the hell do I know what kind it is!"
Loved that movie. Too bad they didn't wait for the director's cut. Should have been a classic.

You know, a deal deal!
-
I've seen it 4 times now. I made my friends watch it too.
-
I will have to buy it on DVD no HBO.
I did spend a good two hours last night watching Don Rickles, Dean Martin and Johny Carson last night on Utube lol
-
I remember seeing Rickles on some talk show or something.
He is this one lady in the audience with a classic Rickles that had me rolling.
He looks at her and says "Are you Jewish? I thought so. With a beak like that you have to be either a Jew or an Eagle."
She of course. loved it
Didnt matter what race, religeon or country you were from.
With Rickles its all fair game.
And as someone pointed out. If he picked on you. You felt honored he did so.
But that was back in the day before everyone got "offended" over every little damn thing.
"My humor folks. Is directed in a way to laugh at ourselves
I speak of all faiths creeds and colors. And why not? Because when our time is up we will all be one one team. So why do we need bigotry and nonsense. Lets enjoy while he (pointing upwards) gives us time"- Don Rickles

A friend of mine lived and worked in Vegas, and he got to meet Rickles once, and he knew some others who had dealt with Rickles. The word he gave us was that Rickles in real life was one of the nicest guys you would ever meet.

Great stuff on Rickles. Love the guy. Hey, RPM (at Panchos) ... see you've got "The Right Stuff" quote saluting Gordo. Always one of my favorite movies. "The Mercury Seven" are all on my list of heros. :aok
