Opinions which is better the 2600xt or the 3850?
I do know the 3850 is cheaper then the 2600xt.
Also whats the word on the 1900's?
I'm still using a 1600 here.
Money is an issue and I may not be able to do anything for awhile unless I do it very soon.
*^^&$%^ may not be able to do anything now :(
Gonna need tires for the truck (4x4) and got lots of dental work still to be done :(
Also a point here! I have trouble with lag when the MA's become titanic tuesday. Planes aren't were I normally shoot, that is I must lead em MORE to hit em (part of the time) then I do if it's a standard MA with 300 or so people in it vs 700 or so in the titanic tuesday arena.
Thinikin it's a CPU, GPU, AH server, and normal net lag issue?
In that they all gang up and create... the plane looks like it right there but when you shoot it's just a little further along in it's flight path then you see...
Thinkin a better card may help?

Best Video cards for the money. Updated monthly

Otherwise, what are you computer specs now? Are you on cable, dsl, dial-up?

To sum up, the 2600 is a lemon. Avoid it. It's the low-end version of the 2900, which has too much heat, noise, uses a lot of power, and the 2600 produces less results, I think, than the 3850.
I didn't know they were doing a 3850 for AGP so soon. If so, excellent! I'd go with that, definitely!

those are all PCI-E cards, he has AGP (older interface like I still have) the article does not help him,.

AMD 64X2 Dual core processor 4200+
With all the AMD etc. fix's installed.
DSL with an average or 73 ping time to AHII
Current Vid card is an 1600 ATI With fairly recent ATI drivers installed and Vertical Sync is set to always on. AA etc. is OFF.
I get an average of 84fps (optimal monitor refresh rate) most of the time with occasional dips to around 50 and in extremes it has dropped to 35 or 40.
I remove many progs and services with WhatRunning and FSautostart BEFORE I start AHII.
No firewall running, no anti-virus, nothing of that sort running.
I do fairly well, aircraft are where I see em and I hit em, when I'm in an arena with about 300 or less but just as soon as it tops about 325 the LAG issue begins. And airplanes are not always where I see em, so I aim the same but MISS.
I preload textures into memory but NOT skins.
I also fly with Other aircraft skins off.
Graphics set to default.
Textures is standard 512
Monitor is at 1024X768
I still get stutters when bombers come through? Thinkin the drone skins are NOT turned off?
-
Try preloading skins into memory. I know on my old system I would get hiccups with cons entering into range and I attributed it with skins loading/caching/whatever.
Worth a shot befor you stick money into it.

sorry, got to page 3, and it was listing best for under $175, prices only going up the whole way, well, AGP shouldn't cost more than $100 max nowadays, and figured it was out of the running

I have other aircraft skins turned off. So I should have no need for preloaded skins. IIRC Skuzzy has said unless you have 4 gig of memory preloading skins is a waste, due to the number of skins now in AH? Just takes up too much memory.
Hopefully that isn't the cause of any stutters. If so HTC has a problem with the coding of AHII?

Naw, man, $100 only gets you a starter card these days (those start at $60 for bare-bottom acceptable, $80 for "not gonna vomit", and $120 for semi-decent) You're really going to need to spend $150+ for anything that will run HL2 or AH2 well.

something is a miss somewhere, wrag. your PC specs blows mine out of the water as far as performance goes....
I run hi-res package 1024 textures and my 19" Dell Ultrasharp LCD monitor is set to 1280 x 1024 resolution.. and my fps is normally pegged at monitor refresh rate of 70 ( 69/70 steadily )
my PC setup is: nothing overclocked / running stock settings
SOYO Full Tower Case ( 1 custom fabbed 120mm side fan, 1 speed adjustable 80 mm rear vent fan , 1 80 mm fan under the HD's blowing across them )
Antec TP-II True Power 2.0 550watt PSU ( 1 of the last good Antec series )
ASUS AMD A7N8X-E Deluxe MB
AMD AthlonXP 2800 processor / Thermaltake 90mm Fan/Copper Heatsink CPU Cooler
ATI X800/850pro 256 megDDR AGP videocard ( forget which # either 800 or 850 ) cat 4.12 driver
1 gig Corsair PC3200 ( DDR400 ) ram dual channel mode
(2) 160 gig SATA I hard drives in raid 1 setup
windows XP Pro SP2
ASUS DVD DL / DVD Ram burner IDE & ASUS DVD - Rom IDE
3.5 floppy drive
SB PCI soundcard - use this for gameport for old analog CH HOTAS
Audiophile sound card ( use this with my Pro Tools and Line 6 Tone Port UX2 & Cubase / Reason software )
I do have a manually set pagefile of 6,000 meg's....... I also preload textures/skins as well.....
normally I have 28 to 30 processes running .........and only shutdown my nod32 when flying online, on this desktop ....... I do have 2 rules initiated. 1 in my D-Link router giving dedicated premission to Aces High server, and one in Zone alarm doing same.......
with your PC specs, you shouldn't have no issues at all running AH and running it in high detail
only time I move my "ingame" video detail sliders toward performance is during the AH Scenario's.( recommended by whels ).......all other times I am basically maxed out toward detail.....
my only current problems is the BS happening with comcast as of late....
EDIT: this just dawned on me
Current Vid card is an 1600 ATI With fairly recent ATI drivers installed
could the problem be the video drivers you are using, I was under the impression that for ATI card cat 4.12 drivers is still your best bet?.....

He didn't mention how much ram he had installed. Too little *free* ram will cause stutters.
One very important tip: If you have vsync enabled like you should in AH, make sure you have triple buffering also enabled. Otherwise you'll get a heavy hit to your fps immediately once it gets below 80,60,30 etc. meaning your fps will half in one blow.
-
That was my question. I'd assume he has 2 gig...but if only one then I'd consider adding a 2nd gig...
I agree older drivers are better...
Skuzzy said the aquamark3 is closest standard benchmark for AH. I'd go ahead and run a benchmark and see how it stacks up vs the "norm" for your CPU. Then reload the older drivers and check diff...
As a general rule CPU more important then VC...

I've never heard that, where do you check that setting?

Got 3 gig of ram.
Triple buffering? In the AH video setup screen?
I tried the 4.12 drivers and recall they gave me other problems.
MB I have is a ECS KV2

I have NO PROBLEMS IF <<< the if seems to be the thing here
the number of people in an arena is BELOW 325?
Perhaps I should qualify that.
IIRC AH has 2 servers?
When either server reach a certain number of individuals logged on it SEEMS like I start getting this situation where the plane, or planes, I'm engaged with are not always where they appear to be.
I call it CPU, GPU, net, server lag when it start happening.
IF I had a video recorder I could train on my monitor at such times and was to record using the AH recorder and record with both at the same time. The AH recorder records what the CPU sees!
I'm pretty sure the differences I refer to would become apparent.
For some people, if they were to do this, I think very little would be different, but for others I think the differences would be major.
HMMM well considering the statement that someone is having no problems and running a system that isn't as good as mine? Is running higher everything I have to wonder????
Another note here!
I tend to take many snap shots!
I USED to knock down planes, with passing shots, out to 600 yds with the 109g10.
I had the TIMING down!
This was in AHII BTW
IIRC It wasn't as popular back then and didn't have so many online.
Now the TIMING SEEMS to change depending on how many are online????
One other thing that perhaps affects this is I DO NOT see hit sprites like I used to?
Rendering SEEMS different?
Sometimes the plane SEEMS to pass right through my stream of fire with NO hits! And it keeps flying without any apparent affect? Although sometimes I later see a kill registered.
I have ALL the effects turned ON!
Only thing I have off is SKINS. And that is per Skuzzy recommendation, as he stated NO ONE using XP has enough memory to preload ALL the skins now in AHII.

Triple buffering can be found with 'advanced' settings in your nvidia dispay utility.

Same thing with Ati.
