Pretty sure Yak-3 came before the 9 model.

Yak-3 entered service in 1944. Yak-9 in late 1942.

Maybe because it was still available? As far as I know there were some earlier Yakovlev projects with that designation, but none of those ever went into production.

Yak-3 is a development of Yak-1.

Yak-7 is a devolpment of Yak-1 and Yak-9 is a development of Yak-7.

I think Yakolev started working on the Yak-3 before the Yak-7 or 9.

Yak1 > Yak1M >Yak3

Yak1> Yak1 Trainer> Yak7 > Yak 9 B/D/DD/T/M

Yak1M & Yak 9T > Yak9U

The Yak 1M was preceded by a development plane that was to be called the Yak 3 but never was (sort of). Yak1M as a project drifted over 1943 such that the Yak 3 was not in production until late spring 44

Yak 7 was in production in 42 and the Yak9D & T were in production in 43
