Title: Model Airplanes in Airports
Post by: kamilyun on January 12, 2008, 11:15:23 PM
I've been traveling a lot recently.  At several airports I've visited, there have been very nice collections of model airplanes.  Everything from 1:72 up to 1:3 or 1:2.

One of the better collections was in Albuquerque with roughly 200 or so donated model airplanes.  Varying qualities, but some were really quite nice.  Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera with me.

SFO has some large scale models (Spitfire and a Hurricane) hanging in the domestic terminals.  (They also have a very nice electronics prototyping/ergonomic design display).

I'll try and start taking pictures if I'm on time ( ;) ), but was wondering if anyone had any airports to recommend looking around.  (Especially if you're stuck for a few hours)

San Diego's airport has a few If a remember correctly. And a good size replica of the Spirit of St Louis.

Not to sure if you were being sarcastic Bodhi, but I don't think the wildcat at O'Hare would qualify as a model because it is the real thing.  Also there is a SBD Dauntless at Midway airport and a small exhibit on the battle of Midway.

I remember seeing a real Stuka at Frankfurt airport.

Taipei has (had?)  a small museum next to it with old aircraft.

I have seen countless model exhibits at airports in the last 20 years, can't even begin to remember how many or where.

I remembered this thread today waiting around for a 3 hour delay in Milwaukee...

the pictures don't do justice! excuse the quality, a crappy Palm Treo 680 with 640x480 as max resolution, and I was tired and couldn't hold the phone perfectly still.

anyway Main terminal before security in Gen. Mitchell International Airport:

I wish I'd gotten to see that Wildcat at O'Hare when I was there, I had a 6 hour layover total, but every time I checked in it could have been "any minute" (was a weather delay), so I couldn't go wandering. Would have loved to have seen it.

Well we dont have cool model airplanes, but we do have a nice area set aside where troops have sent nice letters, patches and the sort.  We do a lot of troop greeting here, as we are usually the last stop in the US for the outgoing, and the first stop back for troops going to Iraq/Afghanistan.

I'll try to get a few pictures to post the nice time I go greet some troops.

We used to have a room out here where there were models, (Even some you could buy), and a sim where you design and test your own aircraft, but that went bye-bye several years ago :(
