Title: Debris on the ground?
Post by: SD67 on January 13, 2008, 06:03:05 AM
I think I've asked before, but I thought I'd throw it out again.
How about having debris from shot down aircraft, tanks etc. remain on the ground for a period of time after they get killed? I think it would be cool to be say driving an M3 into a town and having to skirt around the remnants of the aircraft and vehicles that were destroyed in the process. It would add to the immersion factor a little to see an aircraft crashing to the ground and stay there for a little while rather than disappearing in a puff of virtual smoke.

That would be a huge, really huuge impact on your video card, and would slow down game big time.
Simply not-doable.

I'm surprised there aren't burned out tanks, trucks, structures, etc scattered across the terrains. Things really do, for the most part, look pristine, despite a war that's been raging for 8 years. Objects incorprated into the terrains could offer tanks a bit better cover, offer some variety, etc without resulting in massive performance hits. I suppose replacing some of the much maligned shrubberies wouldn't be a bad thing either.

Burnt out tank husks? Hell, I have a hard enough time seeing enemy GVs when I'm in a tank as it is.

Wouldn't be a great psychological boost when you're trying to take off through the burnt remains of your previous aircraft before the vulchers got ya!  lol

TT would turn into a salvage/scrap yard in an hour :rofl

It's doable I think, granted the wrecks dont stay there for more than 2 minutes.  In TT or FT, you'd see a problem on low end computers.  Or give the options of people being able to turn wrecks on or off.  Then again on the ground war option, people may be thinking they're hiding behind a wreck, but the other guy has them turned off = easy kill.

How about being able to destroy the windmills and other small farm houses.  And lets add some barbed wire fences around here and there.

Try as I might I cannot find a berier anywhere, except for some bizarre reference to the Cossacks II game and as for veicles all I can find is mispelled references :( I'm out of ideas. Please tell us what you are referring to.

would be cool but I think frame rate would be horrible though

That would really make a mess of the runways during a vultch-fest.

In some ways that would be one way to reinforce the idea of not upping at a capped field.

Splitatom, sorry for my vodka inspired razing of your spelling last night. My fingers became detached from my thought process there for a little while.:)

I'm not sure if frame fates will get much of a hit from it these days. Static objects  like debris don't hit as hard as the other aircraft or vehicles. I also like the 2 minute concept for airfields, it will provide some realism as pilots would have had to wait for the runway to be cleared IRL once they became blocked. I think the wrecks could hang around a little longer, say 1/2hr off the airfield to simulate the time a salvage crew would take to recover it.
