I finally got out to the rifle range over the weekend. I shot 400 rounds at 50 meters. I had 200 rounds of ss109/M855 (62 grain ball) and 200 rounds of Federal American Eagle (50 gr hollows).
The first two targets were shot with the ss109/M855. It took me the first 30 rounds to figure out the site picture with the irons. After that, they fell into place pretty well.

The third pic is 150 rounds of the American Eagle. This stuff shot better than the mil surplus that I started out with.

The last pic is from a standing position. The first three were bench shooting, but I didn't have any sandbags, so I just proped up on my elbows :D

I definitely need more standing practice, but for me first time out, I dont' think I did to bad. I'm used to shooting my 30-06 with a scope, so iron sites are a new animal for me.

Good shooting with the iron sights.
I cant stand shooting paper unless its for sighting in. Kinda spoiled having a range with steel....

Looks like fun. Did Betty Lou shoot?

How about a picture of Betty Lou?
NM, did a search and found it. She's a beaut!

Modas, the 62-grain 5.56mm ss109 rounds' are meant for a barrel with a faster rifling twist than the older-style 55-grain and lighter ball rounds. That might be why you had more trouble with the ss109's.

Heh, I know... ironically there was just a thread here about giving inanimate objects proper names.

I've got a 1/9 twist on the barrel. The guy that built it recommended bullet weights from 50 to 68 grains so I should be ok with 62 I would think. I know if I shoot higher bullet weight than that, there my not be enough spin to stabilize the bullet. If I shoot less than 50 grains, the bullet may disintegrate in the air from the high rotation speeds.
I've got 1000 rounds of PRVI PARTIZAN 5.56 M193 coming in the next couple days which is 55 grain. It will be interesting to see how this stuff shoots.

Are you left handed by any chance?
-
As a matter of fact, I am.
I write left handed, use scissors right handed, right eye dominate (so I shoot right handed), I shoot bow left handed (never did figure that out), swing a bat left handed.
Yeah, I'm a freak. I don't know if I'm coming or going :D
