i think it would be a good idea to change the search parameters where you are not limited to 4 character words. or is that something each user can do?

I agree.. I research things on this board frequently.  Why can I search for F4U?

The problem is that if a search through 4 billion works takes 1/2 a second, you add in all the words with 4 or less letter it will more than double the amount of words to search through.

Then add together the number of searches that are run, and can you imagine the lag all that traffic would cause?:O

Even moving that to 3 letter words, and program in an ignore list ("like, "the' and "and" etc) would really help.  It's not uncommon in other message boards, why it isn't done here is a matter of choice.
