Title: Super anime mega discussion thread!
Post by: Treize69 on January 21, 2008, 09:07:50 AM
Since the anime stuff is starting to intrude on the funny pics thread, I figured I'd start a new one to keep the issues seperated and keep the phunny phlowing.

I know theres other anime fans out there, so lets get diskussin. Whats your fave shows, what ones can't you stand? Fave characters? Hate it?

Tell all! Just keep the discussion and images AWAY from hentai please- and for those who don't know what Hentai is, its that nasty porn that unfortunately everyone first thinks of when they think "anime".

I used to like it... when I was 12 to 15. Then I discovered real porn and cars and grew out of it.

Now it is a form of geekery I try and hide from friends and co workers.

Here's to settle the score.

Asking what anime is is like explaining what is the Hollywood audio-visual complex.  There's just too much styles in anime to mention in just one sentence, it's like listing down how many genres are being churned out in American music and movies (including indie)  Anime is what makes up the Japan Ink complex.  This includes Manga (comic).  Japan Ink = Japanese pop culture.

Even the Nissan engineers openly admits that the new Nissan GT-R super car design was inspired by animes that feature futuristic robots.  Now that explains why the new GT-R looks... robotic:p

From our discussion in the other thread...

Thanks for the feedback.  I appreciate it on an artistic level, chicks are cute albeit cartoons.
The manga thing I think I've a little exposure to.  I read a series of books a few years back that a friend recommended to me - Battle Angel Alita if I remember correctly.  Would that be considered manga?  I enjoyed it thoroughly in any case.

And yes, unfortunately hentai is my default thought when I hear anime. ;)

To me, anime is not about sexy girls and hentai. I enjoy stories, fantasy and silly humor (Disney cartoom humor is stupid IMHO)

My fav anime is the entire collection of 'Ghost in the Shell' movies and multiple series. I find that it has most realistic representation of a future with some great philosophy bits.

Samurai Champloo FTW.  Liked Ninja Scroll as well.  Other than that never really got into the whole Japanimation thing....  OK, OK, maybe a lil Cowboy Beebop on Adult Swim when no one's lookin.

First one I ever got hooked on was the various Gundam storylines (Took "Treize" from Gundam Wing), current faves include Bleach, Ghost in the Shell and a few other occasional ones I watch when I can catch them.

Have several Gundam series on DVD.

Biggest problem I have with any of the various combat/miltary based anime series/movies is that they are almost always extremely preachy on the anti-war message. Gundam Wing was rediculous with it, especially the series finale. The philosophical stuff adds a lot to the story lins and makes them "deeper", but some of it goes way overboard.

And I can see the "I'm not talking about Hentai" disclaimer did a lot of good, but I guess I was right about that being the first thing people think of. :(

That's funny you mentioned' that. It instantly reminded me of Robotech, which was one of my favorites' when I was a jr. high schooler. In all three of it's generations, Robotech had plenty of great action in it, but there was always an anti-war backround to everything. Having the earth nearly destroyed in the first series' was the most poignant.

Other than that, alotta the stuff on adult swim is pretty good.

I also like the fact that a lot of anime doesn't take itself overly serious, even the "serious" series usually have someone whos a good "comic relief" or else they occasionally drop in a funny visual or verbal joke.

But one thing that does bug me is that even in series based solely in Japan, including ones based around school-age characters, an awful lot of them look caucasian. Its like they have some issue with doing themselves in animation. Stuff that takes place all over the world I can see (ie- Gundam wing, in which the main characters were a Japanese, a Chinese, an American, a blond-haired, blue eyed Middle Easterner, and an 'unknown'), but some of it stretches things a bit.

Only manga I've ever read was the prequels and sequels to Gundam Wing, before they ended the universe in Endless Waltz (stupid move that was). Not bad, but I prefer the animated stuff, never got into comic books from here either.

One that I can't get into is Deathnote. Thats just too damn weird, even for me. Thats about the darkest one I've ever seen.

Another was that "Big-O" series. Never made any sense to me, and it seems like they just played the same 7 or 8 episodes on a loop- every time I tried to watch, it was an episode I'd seen multiple times already.

I used to be a big Inuyasha/Trigun fan. I guess its cause the main characters act like total dumbarses at times. :)

Edit: and Gundam was a good series, but lost interest after Gundam seed.

I haven't seen all Gundam until Gundam-00 was aired this fall.

And to Gundam admirers - the new Gundam looks promising.  It's also the first anime in HD (High Vision as the call it in Japan).  Seriously... does an anime have to be in high definition??????

I like the stuff that mixes conventional animation with computer graphics (like Zoids and Ghost in the Shell did), that stuff would look awesome in HD.

I think the best Gundam series was 08th MS Team- it was like a gritty, ultra-real war movie set in a future with walking robots- and the animation was spectacular.

Followed a unit of normal grunts instead of the usual anime "super-soldiers". Was very well done, wish they'd run it on Cartoon Network again. Even censored for US TV it rocked.

In the funny pictures thread, the girl that MG posted was Iori Yoshizuki from the anime/manga I"s. The manga version is 15 volumes long, which makes it a very good story to read from beginning to end. What I really found as interesting was that in the manga, she was born on 3/21/81, where I was born on 3/12/81. (I about crapped myself when I read that)

I dont even know where to start on my favorites, theres too many that I like to really choose a favorite.

One the the funniest I seen is called  "Ninin ga Shinobuden" (Ninja Nonsense).  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja_Nonsense)

I'll have more but since I just got home, I have some work to take care of.

Anime comes in many varieties. What really impresses me of it is the ability it has to be MUCH better than ANY hollywood movie ever done.

My top fave's:

Anything by Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli. The man's a genious! Some listed below:
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Princess Mononoke
Porco Rosso
Kiki's Delivery Service
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Spirited Away
Whisper of the Heart

Silent Service (ww2 sub anime..highly anti-american but it's straight with the theme of the era).

Zipang- Story of an Aegis class destroyer of the Japan Self-Defense force getting sucked back into WW2 and how the crew deals with it.

Lupin the IIIrd - very fun to watch. Think of it as James Bond, Indiana Jones and Super Agent 87 all mixed in one.

Grave of the Fireflies - story of 2 japanese siblings orphaned during ww2 that had to live on the streets. I watched half of it and had to wait almost half a year to get the guts to finish watching it. Its very impacting and realistic.

Evangelion - although I usually dont like the big robot type anime (too cliche imo.. i like original stuff) I like the characters in this one.

Mahoromatic - fun to watch .. sort of PG17

Final Fantasy (several movies) - maybe im just addicted to the games. Anyways, they got excellent storytelling.

The Cockpit - 3 separate, 25 minute mini-movies about WW2. Follows the story of a Japanese Kamikaze, a German LW pilot and a third story I forget what its about. --- nice dogfight scenes on this one. not realistic but fun to watch.

Starship Troopers - yep there was an anime of this in the 1980's. Better and faithful to the book more than the modern movies are.

Trigun - very fun

Dragon Slayers - very fun too!

Anybody ever watch Trinity Blood? Starting to get into this one a bit- its (kinda) a Vampire story, and they're a fave of mine.

Its weird, but interesting.

I seen a preview of Zipang (?), kind of crazy watching a F4F being shot out of the sky by a SAM (if thats the preview I seen)

Mahoromatic I loved. Seen all of the eps and have the complete manga collection and the Visual (Art) book also.

If you want ones that are just cute, try the anime Azumanga Daioh or the manga Yotsuba. Nothing dirty at all, just innocent fun and sillyness.

Dr. Slump is just funny on a whole other level, from the creator of Dragon Ball

Ai Yori Aoshi - Love story about long lost love

Golden Boy - Too hard to explain, you just have to watch it and be amazed (study study study!)

I'm in love with Rally Vincent.

She carries a 9mm CZ-75 loaded with +P+ ammunition, and is expert with many other firearms also.   And she drives a Shelby Mustang Cobra GT500.

What more could a guy ask for?   Besides all that, she is really cute, and still a virgin too.

The only annoying thing about this series is that the author did not do his research on gun laws here, as Chicago has the most restrictive gun laws in the United States.   So a gunshop like the one that Rally has could not even exist in Chicago.  He should have instead set it in a major western or southern city, where there are much more relaxed gun laws.  Probably one of the states that still allows for full auto machine gun ownership would be best.

Also, her little sidekick Minnie May could never get away with possessing, let alone using, so many different kinds of hand grenades and other explosives like she does.

Still, it would make for a great TV series, in my opinion.   Each episode could be filled with high speed car chases, gunfire, and explosions.

Cowboy Bebop with subs, tryed watching it dubbed some and it just made the whole story fall apart and not make sense.  It has great action scenes, characters with interesting stories that are slowly revealed as the season develops, and the humour isn't for 8 year olds.  Only 1 season and a movie that takes place somewhere between some later episodes.  Oh and a good soundtrack to boot.  10/10

Samurai Champloo again subs.  Made by the same people who did Cowboy Bebop.  Interesting blend of some current culture with feudal japanese society, hard to explain.  Only 1 season that didn't tie the episodes together quite as well as Bebop but great action.  8/10

I've watched a couple other movies and some episodes from some series but most of it really is garbage.

I really liked Urusei Yatsura, I have two boxsets from it.  Patlabor is great, Akira, some of the Gundam series.  I never really got into Ranma 1/2.  I learned everything I need to know about relationships from Urotsukidoji and La Blue Girl.

The story-telling possibilities are great, and there are some really talented anime directors out there.

As it sits only a Magnaflow cat-back.  My long term plan is to upgrade the LS1 to a factory spec-stock '02 Corvette LS6 (about 400hp), put on a SS hood, and get some 18" C6 chrome wheels.  Then I'll be done.  I hope.

Yes, but I'm not a "modder" by nature.  The only reason I'm considering the LS6 upgrade is because essentially my engine is a detuned LS6 minus the heads and cam.  The rest is purely aesthetic.  I'm no quarter-mile addict and I don't street race.  But knowing I'm only about 1500 bucks or so from an LS6 is far too appealing to me.  If I didn' already have an LS6 intaked, injectors, and a Z06 clutch I wouldn't even be thinking about doing anything to the engine other than a lid (which I have, just have never put it on, long story).

Have you contemplated about getting ightweight flywheels, carbon driveshafts, and double-plate clutch?  My educated guess is that thse upgrades can make your car quicker without doing engine mods (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).  I also think your engine already makes good power/torque in such a compact package.

I'm modding my Regal LS.  It's going to have a sweet Trans-Am screaming chicken decal on the hood, and a big '2 WYCKED' decal on the sides so people know what I am.

Instead of a "doors closing" buzzer, there would be a tape of car doing air guitar solo.  I call that 'I wanna rock your body' and then in parenthases it says 'till the break of dawn'.  And I'm going to have sweet hypno-rims on it that rotate at a frequency that makes women want to have sex with me.  Also, it's going to have pina colada dispensers on it.  I'll wipe this bad boy down with a shammy every day because that's what you gotta do to rock.

I'm taking out a home equity loan to cover it all, but, you know, you need to spend money to make money.

russian.. did not mean so much that the material is for 12 year olds tho... mostly I think it is...

I meant that the drawing style is made for people who desire 12 year olds... they draw 12 year olds with breasts.   the drawing style is very pedophilistic to me (if that is a word).

ahh DBZ!:aok   That franchise is an international success.
Like it or not, there's gonna be a Live Action release scheduled this year.

Hollywood has been milking on Marvel/DC materials for years.  Now they are looking to East, with Dragon Ball and Speed Racer for 2008 and (maybe) for 2009 - Evangelion.

I am a huge fan of the war-type anime's. Macross/Robotech especially. When I was little I had a huge attraction to F-14s and well, Robotech is basically F-14s in space. So naturally I'm knee deep in that stuff!

Second anime I'm in to, Shin-Chan. Take a kid-like show, some somewhat cheap animation style (with some artistic touches), add in dirty and current humor and you have a great show. You can find episodes on YouTube.

Anime = Japanese animation, usually since 1980, though some series have been around since the '70s.

Wile E. Coyote is American, Warner Bros., from the '50s and '60s. :)

Still good though, I'm partial to the one where Bugs Bunny subbed for the Roadrunner while the RR was out sick. :D

My all time favorite. The guy loves cars and guns, and reproduces each of them with attention to detail, at least in the manga.

The animation's not bad either, even Larz could find it interesting.

Gunsmith Cat's short video "the car chase" (http://www.dailymotion.com/related/4799625/video/x220fz_gunsmith-cats-amv-the-chase_shortfilms)

I'll definitly agree that there's a certain amount of pedophilia in the anime makers, but what could u expect from Japan anyway.

Prove my point.

Pedophile stuff and anti adult stuff.. the heros are madz skillzzz 12 year old boys with muscles and the girls are 12 year olds with boobs and the bad guys are all much more realistic... but old..  It is like pedophile or sqeeeeeker rage at adults.

I loved it in my teen years, I was funy plus it excited my imagination.

I remember Hukuto No Ken also from hose days, no 12 years old with boobies there, just good old I rip your heart out in a post apocaliptic universe.

I used to like "Cobra" too, no kids there either.

I'm no expert in Anime Lazs, I bet there's many exemples that would prove you wrong as I just posted 3 from my childhood days from memory.

Mangas/Jap anime definitly target the pre teen and teens, with like you pointed out, the discovery of sexual impulsions, and the confidense boost of "I'm a squeaker but I can take on the world". The surprise comes to me that it still finds a way to awake the pedophilia factor in 20 years old plus. But we all have our fantasies, would it be dress as a medieval knight, own a Falcon millenium model, drop a big block in motor city online, or fly cartoon planes online.

If you think that's bad, watch those pornographic animes where 12 year olds are getting raped by diformed humanoid monster with tri-penal rotating thingies. That will leave you clueless for a couple of days, wondering WTF:huh

Styles that best represents mainstream anime

various styles

some ridiculous exaggerations:D
(http://otakusurf.files.wordpress.com/2007/06/lucky-star-8c.png)

Lasz, the styling depends on the genre/theme though (more on that later).  And yes, there are (some ridiculous) exaggerations (young boys with power, and adolescent girls with boobs) just to visually excite viewers.  Squeekers (mostly in kids shows) are somewhat mellowed in eng dub form.  Watch them in original form and your ears might bleed:p

intended audience

Kodomo = kids
Shōjo = girls
Shōnen = boys
Seinen = adult men
Josei  = adult women

* Remember that it's wide and is not only restricted to kids like in the west.

Anime Genres

Action/Adventure
Drama
Game Based
Horror
Progressive or "Art films"

Thematics in anime

The cybernetic body is female, however the story sometimes points to her not being a her before getting prosthetics. However a plot is introduced that seems to point toward her being the little girl folding cranes in the hospital next to...oh, I forgot his name. The head badguy that can't move his face. :D

On the left her prosthetic body, on the right is their equivalent to an avatar. Some people spin off thinking that her "avatar" is what her original body would have looked like as an adult.

Followed a unit of normal grunts instead of the usual anime "super-soldiers". Was very well done, wish they'd run it on Cartoon Network again. Even censored for US TV it rocked.

I got this from meatwad and it's called Ebichu the Housekeeping Hamster. Comedy gold:aok

[edit] for me, the pitch from one of the characters in Ebichu is so high I turned on the equalizer in the media player to tone down hi freqs.  I use SONY monitoring headphones.  My neighbor would kill me if I use the speakers.

I read somewhere in an explanation of some of the Anime "traditions" for western viewers that the high-pitched voice thing in females has become a symbol of youth and inexperience- basically like we'd call someone an airhead or ditz. The higher and squeekier the voice, the less seriously the character is generally meant to be taken.

Good example is watching Bleach in Japanese- Orihime (the well-stacked redhead) has a high pitched, out-of-breath sounding voice; while Rukia (the petite black-haired one) sounds very mature and has a completely normal voice- even overly, eerily mature for someone who is supposed to be about 17 physically (though shes actually about 150-200 years old). Orihime is a complete ditz (almost comic relief in the early episodes before her character and backstory were developed to match her... umm... "assets"), while Rukia is the female lead and generally has things on the ball (though she does have her "duh" moments).

Similar is those big eyes in Anime- generally (at least in females), the more over the top the eyes look, the more non-serious and good natured the character. Thats why in comedy scenes the eyes get freaky huge and sparkly, while when someone is angry or arguing, their eyes usually get small and beedy. Overly drawn squinty eyes usually are a sign of embarrasment or frustration.

I've yet to figure out how pulling down your lower eyelid and sticking out your tongue got to be accepted as a "go F yourself" response to someone though...

As to the voices, yes, I've noticed that. But in Nene's case it's to provide contrast when she's making fun of the guys; they'll say something but their mouth will stop moving while some gay joke or off-sexual reference is added onto the end of their sentence, when she'll appear with her mouth closing or saying "is what you meant to say, right?" in her normal squeak. Nobody but the two sets of main characters in that series are to be taken seriously really, as it's one of the "every day life" animes like Lucky Star.

I used to know where the eyelid thing came from (forgot), and there was sticking out your tongue. Within the past decade and a half or so it started becoming common to mix both of them. It's best explained as, "It's just the Japanese." :D

Ok... so one in twenty or so anime cartoons has MOSTLY not the child like pedophile bait..   they all seem to have that tho... unlined faces except in the bad guys..

So what would you guys say the drawing style is?   If there is no style.. if it is not what I am saying.. what is it?   There is a peter pan aspect to it.

most of it still seems to be the sicko pedophile stuff with 12 year olds with boobs.

What do you guys think of Miller?  about the Sin City series for instance?

I think I am comparing rock to rap with Miller and anime.   No way does anime compare.   maybe some of the kiddie transformer cartoons... maybe that is the problem.. I never liked them either.

anime... teenagers saving the world..  preteens with boobs and madz skilz.

mediocre artwork.

I tried building a Gouf once. Was some kinda crappy plastic. I have two Zaku, one Char's Zaku, and one of the original Gundam action figures. I think my other one is the GM from Endless Waltz...I don't remember.

There was a time when I knew all of the model numbers and descriptions from the Mobile Suit Gundam; Journey to Jaburo game. I still haven't been able to beat the last level.

I have the RX-79[G]"Ez8" Gundam, the black and purple MS-05B Zaku I and the standard green MS-06F Zaku II, all in 1/100 "master" grade.

I dunno if I'll win, but I have a bid in right now on a 1/60 scale "perfect" grade MS-06F Zaku II. Those things are so detailed you build them from the inside out- all the hydraulic rams and actuators, internal frame, and then add the armor plating.

Gonna be one heck of a project if I win it. :aok

Not quite that high quality, but yes. It's obviously meant as a toy, and I used it as such. :D

Came with many different weapons. Lower detail, like the hands aren't articulated. All the limbs pop off in a handy little-boy-blowing-stuff-up kinda way, too. :lol

They're kits (some with nearly 200 pieces, and over a foot tall) made by Bandai (or least marketed by Bandai). They are difficult to find in the US, you almost have to look for them online. E-Bay is your friend. :)

I dunno, a lot of the newer anime is swinging toward the dark and brooding look again, so it might stick to the new "Begins/Dark Knight" style.

Apparently I seriously underesimated the number of parts for the Perfect Grade kits- found this description of the one I'm trying to get.

Quote
Model 1/60 PG Zaku II MS-06F

Description- Features fully-articulated hands, a moving and illuminating camera eye (requires two LR43 watch batteries, not included), operable hatches all over the body (20 locations), and inner detail of amazing level (including 24 moving hydraulic dampers).

Information- Includes the Zaku machine gun and heat hawk axe weapon. When completed, the kit stands 30cm tall and weighs about 500g. There are a whopping 548 pieces here, so be ready to spend some time putting this together.

Thats 12 inches tall, and weighing about a pound, with a lighted eye and nearly every component of the Mobile Suit modeled, including the cockpit, moving lighted eye, and all opening access hatches and armor plates.

I'm gonna have an evilgasm if I win that thing...
Title: Super anime mega discussion thread!

548 pieces???

does that include....

-buttons 'n switches for the cockpit?
-internal parts for that gun? etc?

I don't get the logic of putting together 548 parts for something that's 30cm/12in tall.

The RX-78 in the second to last picture is the one I have. The Zaku looks like the head is wrong, even with the damage...

The point in putting together that many pieces varies on the person. Some people simply need something to do for day. Some people feel they've accomplished something. If I could stand it, I'd do it to see the inner mechanical workings of the suit.

Kills a lot of time and looks great when its done. Isn't that the whole point of any model, no matter what its of?

It does include-

hydraulics
all power cords and conduits
internal skeleton
about a half dozen hand-held weapons combinations
individual pices of armor plating
access hatches, including prop rods and lift arms
scale pilot figures
base and surrounding diorama

You basically build a 1/60th scale mobile suit that in the anime is 18 meters tall and weighs in at about 20 tons.

OOZ, the Zaku in the diorama is a I, has a different head and several external differences from the Zaku II.
Title: Super anime mega discussion thread!

here it is with the "diorama", it has its gantry.

I think it also comes with the same base and howdah as the "Char's Zaku" kit I posted earlier.

And if you take your time and do it with a lot of care, it comes out with this much detail (not including the ground yahoos).

I've never seen an MS-05 with the shoulder mounted shield or spiked shoulder guard. The head of one in the "shot in the face" picture appears to have a place where the weird fin thing the MS-06 has on its head used to be.

But, then again, you probably know first hand what's in those pics.
Title: Super anime mega discussion thread!
Post by: Treize69 on February 21, 2008, 03:09:16 AM
You don't see many of them, but the complete lack of external power conduits rules out it being an MS-06. That forehead fin is usually a pilots choice or unit designator thing apparently- I see more kits and shots from the anime without it than with it. It also seems to depend on the construction block and subtype of the Zaku in question, but theres discrepencies within types that gets confusing- for example, both of these Zekes are listed as MS-06Fs

MS-05 Zaku Is did occasionally carry the shoulder shield, and they had the spikes found on the Zaku IIs left shoulder on the right shoulder shield. It was usually used as an armored "boxing glove" type melee weapon, but I have seen it mounted on the shoulder as a shield when the suit needs to use both hands.

Standard Zeke weapons options include a Panzerfaust tube with 2 rounds. Its hand loaded and works just like its historical namesake- quick rocket burn and lob it in toward the target. hard to aim right against a moving target, but great against stationary ones.

Just wanted to let MG and OOZ know- the evilgasm is official. I've got the 1/60 Zaku II. The box itself is about a 20" x 6" x 9". Preliminary construction (getting the accessories put together and some of the larger external pieces sprayed with surfacer) is underway, and the scale and detail of this thing is disgusting- its 120mm MG spans from the tip of my middle finger to just past the heel of my hand when assembled, and the Heat 'Hawk stands to the chest of the 1/100 Zaku I that stands next to my monitor. The 1/100 'Hawk is almost exactly the size of the cutting edge of the blade on the 1/60th one. The ammo drum for the MG even has a seperate piece to represent the top level of the coiled 120mm rounds. Just assembling the head is a thirteen step process involving parts molded in three different colors, screws, wires, an LED bulb... Each arm takes 10 steps and each arm is 15 steps, the torso subassemblies add up to over 20 steps... This thing is going to kill a lot of time and be an incredible display piece if I don't screw it up.

Most annoying part is that it comes with an "intel report" written and illustrated like it was an EFSF publication- but its completely in Japanese.  I'd love to be able to read it, but I don't (naturally) speak or read any Japanese, nor do I know anyone who could translate it. :furious

It normally goes for nearly $300 when you can find them (they're pretty rare), but I got mine for about $120, including shipping. Supplies are gonna kill me though. At least most of its snap-together and not supposed to be glued (or it wouldn't move, obviously), but theres a lot of stuff to paint and room to add extra detail and "tweak" it a bit...  :devil

Know a girl who's currently in Japanese at our college. Scan it up and I'll huck it at her for you, if you like.

I don't laugh at "trekkies" unless they're running around in makeup and costumes pretending to blast phasers (http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/cubegoodies/8506/) at each other and call up Spock on their communicators (http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/plush/9c69/). I don't laugh at the anime culture until their galavanting around in their overdone cosplay (http://images.google.com/images?q=cosplay) either. (Click that link though, some great jailbait)

Every media culture has those who like to watch it, play with it, take interest in it, and socialize about it. Every media culture also has those who want to show the world just how insanely (and usually unhealthily) they're into it. It all depends on where you sit whether or not people ought to laugh at you or not.
