Title: World of Warcraft
Post by: Grayeagle on January 22, 2008, 12:19:24 PM
Ok ok .. I tried it.

Got way sucked in.

It's actually a lot more fun than vanguard .. gameplay is better than VG or EQ was.

You can duel by invitation only.. PvP by option setting ..Horde vs Alliance wars here an there (you sign up and get called to battle when the teams are even on each side ..sheesh .. I tried to boom an zoom with my Warlock in Warsong Gulch but got sucked into turn fights and wacked by Rogue-dweebs (similar to spit-dweebs but worse!)

-on Garona server, Alliance side, in the Onorary Order of the Ovine .. shuuda done this years ago natch.

-Frank aka GE
-Grayeagle, human Paladin among others :)
-Riprap, gnome warlock
-Oot, human warrior
-Boomr, dorf with a gun and a kitty

MT'd 40mans before the expansion, and 25mans after it.

Quit now. Spare yourself.

I tried WoW for a couple months after much ranting by a guy at work. Thought it was the lamest POS software that's ever graced my computer.

You run around killing things at or just below your level to gain items to auction so you can eventualy buy powerful goodies. Yes there are quests and wars and duels.

As you kill your level goes up. But it takes weeks to months for an average player. You have to post auctions to earn money to purchase power in its many magical down to inanimate object forms.

The free market end of the game has to be masterd if you realy want to get anywhere. Lucking onto hot goodies is a poor stratagie. So you spend inordinate amounts of time doing make work killing things to get a booty stash to sell for silver and gold.

Killing other players and monsters in quests, wars, and duels is a direct result of the goodies you can afford, not fighting skill. Money is the ultimate power supporting game play.

If you like world of warcraft here's another game you should try. Anarchy Online, totally FREE. No time limits on the free accounts either.

I played WoW for a bit... You know, I'm not one for Level Grinding.

Couldn't stand it in Maple Story, couldn't stand it in Gun Bound, couldn't stand it in any game I've ever played.

Except maybe Monster Hunter.  But that might have more to do with the fighting huge monsters part.

Ignoring that, it's a decent game, if you have a lot of free time, and a lot of money laying around.  Personally, I'd rather spend 30$ on two months of Aces High than one month of WoW.

At least my old computer met AHs old... requirements...

*sobs on his pent III Coppermine 870mhz, 280mbs of ram, and 32mbs of video ram*  :cry

Edit: If my prices are off, blame it on being up for far too long.

That's really, really, really far off the mark.

Quests give out mostly crap gear. Duels give out no gear. There are no wars, just pvp battlegrounds that reset every game. Gold is helpful, but not neccessary. The only thing you need gold for is consumables, if you choose not to spend a single hour farming them for yourself.

1 hour of farming can get you enough materials to raid for the week, without killing a single npc.

The good gear only comes from either PVP, specifically the 2v2, 3v3, & 5v5 bracket arenas, and 25man raiding. Your starter epics come from 10 man "raiding".

You can beat anything in the game without the best gear using simple strategy and team work.

I was pretty wild during my "college days." But, if it involved pills or a needle I just said no. Same with WoW. That's not a monkey I need hanging around on my back :)

If AH ever releases its new version (no idea what its called now) you will have your virtual pilot and do missions and gain experience and upgrades for your plane/pilot.

Basically its WoW with planes and no Auction House.  I wonder if you can get a +20 Hispano damage enchant with enough points.....

I play both, and enjoy both.  What I like best about the games, is the group of people I met in them.

My supervisor used to love teasing my coworker and I about our online gaming.

I'd rave about my Aces High exploits, usually describing some air to air encounter with lots of hand motions and the like.

My coworker would boast about his level 41 druid and some raid he and his crew did the evening before.

I had no use for Warcraft, he had no use for WW2 flight sims.

But my boss agreed listening to Aces High was far, far more interesting   :)

Aye LePaul .. WoW and AH are very much two different experiences.

What cracks me up in any role-play-fantasy genre is when someone goes off about how much 'skill' it takes ..

..they literally have no idea of the level of skill required here or in any decent first person shooter.

There are a lot of things that blizzard has done for game play that really make it a lot of fun tho :)
Equipment is just not that big a deal. The 'Uber Rare' elite stuff has better 'numbers' and some limited effects that are cool ..but ..the average character just equipped with quest bits and 'green' (common) gear can do just fine ..the DPS-Healing-Tanking ..whatever, is all very well done for gameplay.. a modicum of common sense is required when you choose yer fight :)

If it's an elite mob your level or more, get friends :)
If it's a room fulla grays, you still have to be careful with that Area-of-Effect uber nuke ..if they arent one-shot kills the swarm may beat you down before you can take them all out :)
(Fuddthoo .. my gnome wiz-engineer ..is always testing that .. LOL)

Small unit tactics ..gotta have some :) .. but skill? .. well .. not very much required ..
..orders of magnitude less than dancing in a cloud layer aginst <insert any plane type here> that is well flown.

I was an avid wargamer, sucked into D&D when it came out, then G-man hooked me on AW ..then came LoK, EQ, ..and now WoW is the latest .. I enjoy AH ..just rather spend my spare time in WoW these days.

BLizzard did a heck of a job on graphics, gameplay, character balance, and sheer fun factor compared to all the role-playing games that came before. Wait'll you get a load of the Succubus minion that Warlock's can earn ..she cracks me up *every* time :)
(guess it's because I useda know 3 ladies over the years that she could have been modeled from ..low drag, hi-speed, party girls all the way, very hi-maintenance)

Same here, I play both and enjoy both. Main reason as Skernsk said, I enjoy both more so because of the players I met and the squad and clan I am in.

Aye .. the people can make or break a game.

Nothin like workin with a good team, setting up, target(s) sighted, boxin him(them), and leaving the target(s) no way out as you take him(them) down.

AH or WoW .. -g- ..frankly it's easier in WoW :)
