I'm watching "The Quiet Man" on TCM (even if they did ruin it with color), one of my favorite moviesd of all time, not just John Wayne movies. Got me wondering- whats everyone elses favorite movies of his? My others-
McClintock
Sands of Iwo Jima
Green Berets
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
-
McClintock
Big Jake (I think that's the title, where he goes to recover his kidnapped grandson)
Rio Bravo
Yellow Ribbon
Hatari
Those are the ones I like the most. I thought he was ok in that Sub movie but I can't recall the title.
-
I forgot about Big Jake, that ones great too.
"I thought you were dead?"
-
What? No one likes True Grit?

Quiet Man was filmed in color. In B & W it would be difficult for Ford to explain the effect of Maureen O'Haras red hair against the green of the emerald isle has on Sean Thornton.

Big WORD on that one.
I think She Wore A Yellow Ribbon is my dad's all-time favorite movie.
-
Glenn Campbell ruined True Grit AFAIC. The later movie with the Rooster Cogburn character and Maureen OHara was a far better one.
I recall one movie where Wayne played a Detective and ended up using a MAC10 (MG) in it. I can't think of the title at all. CRS strikes again.
-
Guess I didn't answer the question yet...
I have in my very incomplete collection:
The Quiet Man
Sons of Katie Elder
The Cowboys
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Have to add at least a few more.
"movie with the Rooster Cogburn character and Maureen OHara was a far better one."
Rooster Cogburn and the Lady was Katherine Hepburn
-
My two favorite are The Quiet Man and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
Big Jake close behind.
-
Been watching The Quiet Man as well. Great film.
Not sure if I can single out any one film as my favorite, but here's a few I rank above the others:
They Were Expendable
3 Godfathers
The Searchers
Fort Apache
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
Sands of Iwo Jima
True Grit
The Cowboys
Blood Alley
In Harm's Way
-
True Grit
Rio Lobo
Green Berets
-
Hmm, the copy I have on VHS is in B+W, thats I always remembered it. (EDIT- IMDB says it was filmed in color, so why do I have it in B+W??)
Glad to see other people liked Yellow Ribbon, I had a heck of a time tracking that one down a few years back on VHS.

Rio Bravo just started on AMC. Too bad they've gotten to playing commercials now.
-
in harms way... honorable mention: Rooster Cogburn (AKA African Queen with cowboys)

Maybe you are watching it on a B & W TV.
Seems like a biatch to pay for all that home theater HD stuff and fiind out it doesn't do color.

Cole: Now just a minute, son.
Mississippi: I... AM NOT... YOUR SON. My name is Alan Bourdillion Traherne.
Cole: ...Lord Almighty...
Mississippi: Yeah.

You're not sure which is your favorite or you got a list that you can only post one at a time? ;)
-
no arlo, I'm just naming the ones that haven't been named yet, not just my favorites. To pick a favorite would be too difficult, besides, most have been named already.

I haven't seen John Wayne movies, but I heard he's a legend and an American icon.
What Wayne movie should I check out?
-
In Harm's Way
-
When I was a kid I used to love watching a local show called "John Wayne Theater"....played all his movies. I loved the guy. I cant think of a John Wayne movie I didn't like.

LMAO ... that about sums em up.

I haven't really seen anyone(except maybe one) mention "Red River" or "The War Wagon", two of my favorite John Wayne movies.

Someone else mentioned that Red River wasn't mentioned enough. ^
;)
War Wagon? Not bad but not as much a JW movie as one that had an all star cast with him in it. Not unlike Longest Day (or even Donovan's Reef now that I think about it). McClintock is more a JW movie to me. As is Hell fighters:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063060/
Saw that on the big screen in my much younger days and left quite an impression.
-
True Grit, I guess.
-
"The Flying Tigers".
