Title: Yeee Haw!!! We Got Us An Ice Storm!!!!
Post by: rpm on January 24, 2008, 07:45:37 PM
I love to watch the public panic.

Quote
As of 3:17 p.m., the National Weather Service in Fort Worth has upgraded the Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning ... which is in effect from 9PM this evening until noon Friday.

You would have thought they had just announced the nukes were inbound. We have a possiblilty of freezing rain after midnight. It will be above freezing by 8am. There was a rush like I have'nt seen since Thanksgiving.

I watched 2 women almost come to blows over the last cube steak.

I plan to make my special waffles in the morning and watch all the idiots slide into eachother in Dallas tommorrow morning.

Yeah I grew up in Austin and I remember we would get like 1/2 inch of snow and the city would panic, everything would shut down.

Every year we have a significant icing in Dallas I see no less than half a dozen cars plowed into guard rails on my way into Dallas south on 75. My eyes usually hurt from all the rolling.

Early 1990's....massive ice storm hit eastern Arkansas.  Every power pole between our home town and the next was snapped in two from the weight of the ice.   Nearly every tree damaged;  some with five foot thick trunks uprooted.

We were without power for 11 days.  Some outlying areas were without electricity for nearly three weeks.

Life is too short to smoke cheap cigars, drink bad whiskey and depend on a halfass generator.

A couple of weeks ago, Wichita Falls had a bunch of freezing rain hit right at 7am.  The result - 119 accidents, a bank robbery (cops all at the crashes, right?) and a fatality right outside the Sheppard AFB gate on a bridge that had a series of accidents one after another all morning.  They'd clear one accident, re-open the bridge, and someone else would come sailing across the bridge and spin off into the trees or down a hill or something.

Me?  I got up at 0630, looked outside, saw a couple of sprinkles on the ground.  Took a shower, looked outside at around 0710 and saw my driveway getting coated with ice.  I called my boss and said I'd see him around noon, and went back to bed.  *duh*

As for tomorrow, the flying wing already pushed report time to no earlier than 0900 and we're told to actually consider the road conditions before hopping the car and driving into work.  Something about his folks crashing and dying when we probably won't be flying anyhow puts off the wing commander I guess.

They have special uniforms for guys who fly over houses and take pictures.  They're bright orange and have padding so the handcuffs and leg irons don't chafe so much.

When I saw that you typed 'onan' I went to the wiki and looked it up.  Guess what it had as the search result?  Yep, you guessed it.  I'd never heard of Onan generators before.

They are a division of Cummins Diesel.

Seriously eagl, I  see trainers flying under 1000ft regularly over my place. I must be a test target or waypoint. Want my gps?

Sure.  You may be near a low level turn point, or somewhere near the standard departure or recovery route.

I think the gubbermint is sekretely run by buttlookers.  They're passing secret butt watching laws.  Warrantless butt looking.  Next time you see a department of state security employee, you can be sure they're looking at your butt.  It's a secret though, so don't call them out on it or you'll be thrown in secret jail for interfering with their secret butt looking program.

You see, the wrong kind of butt on airplanes is a security risk.  It's all logically justified in the laws, but they're secret so you can't read them.

Maybe RPM is in on it and he's watching the butts of the planes that fly by.  So no photographs.

I think you're on a low level route.  I'd have to check the charts at work but from looking at google earth, I think you're in the general vicinity of at least one low level route we use all the time.

I see those trainers zooming low over my place all the time. I can see the pilots clearly. I'd estimate their AGL at 500ft. Just thought it would be cool to know one of the guys up there.

Before Desert Storm I would get zoomed by C130's flying NOE. That will rattle your windows, let me tell you. When I was a kid I remember seeing an F4 Phantom come in on a mock bomb run. I thought I was toast.

Here's a hi alt pic (like you would recognise it)...
My place is the triangular property between the railroad and the hiway. I've got 165 acres.

they always make a big deal out of everything because... well...  not a big deal doesn't get listeners/watchers.

Always funny to get phone calls from friends of relatives who have heard about the great earthquake or flood or snowstorm or whatever in my area and wanting to know if I am OK..  It is never anything at all.

I guess they don't call it "drama classes" that these guys took for nothing.

I am just trying to figure out what "journalism" means and what they got taught in those classes.

Eagle?  You from the Falls?

Good lord, I don't feel so alone out here anymore.  My mom was one of those lucky people that wrecked,  Uck, such a mess.  She's fine, SUV... yeah... It's in the shop.

I used to live in a little town called Avery (I use 'live in' very loosely, seeing as how it was a 30 minute drive to town on back roads.)  Big ice storm back in... I wanna say 2000, maybe 2001.  Lost power for a week, maybe longer.  My dad decided about 5 days into it to go get a generator, fun times sitting in front of the fire place until then though.

Playing game boy, and cards/monopoly with my parents.  Fun... times...

I try not to make think poorly of the Texans too much when they panic over a few flakes of snow or a little bit of ice on the road.

They really don't have the facilities/supplies/experience to manage the roads for winter weather.  So the one time a year that roads are slick, they stay slick until nature takes care of it. That sucks for anyone driving on the roads during the slick time.

Oh well. Sometimes it works out good for the kids ~ if they get a snow/ice day. :)

Interestingly enough the roads here in Texas ice over much quicker than places north of here. It's quite odd.

Down here in Dallas when traveling West on I-20 there's a ramp to Loop 408. Anytime there's ice in the forecast they close that ramp because it's the first part of the highway to ice over.

My first attempt at driving in a Texas Ice storm wound up with me sitting sideways across 3 lanes of Mockingbird Rd. Completely unable to get traction. Three of us pushed the back end towards a patch of sand and I got to work.

The last few I've been in the midwest and fwiw, they act and drive like that all the time here so count your blessings while you watch the hilarity ensue.

Here's the email that the Michigan office received this morning (sent at 8:20am local Dallas time):

===
Most of the Dallas Java Team working from home today as there was a prediction of ICY weather today. If case you need to reach them, please send an email/IM if work number is not forwarded.
===

I thought the term 'prediction' was especially funny.

Meanwhile, here in beautiful West Michigan, the lake effect snow machine has given us 11 inches in the last day....and everyone's in the office :D

.10" of Ice in Hot Springs, AR

Most of my contacts & clients have gone home early...

The milk & bread has dissapeared from store shelves...

People out driving like IDIOTS on bridges & overpasses...

Dogs & cats living together...

MASS HYSTERIA!!!!

All over a little ice.  It's not like the Ice Storm of 2000, where it was 2.5" of ice, no power for 8 days, and a MAJOR catastrophe.  Maybe that's why folks are freeking out...we got burned bad before.

I'm sitting at my computer, drinking hot "Double Chocolate Ghirdelli" coffee, and another log on the fire...6 days supply of booze and I still have power.

I dont know many actual people who "panic" about. The local idiots on the news try squeeze all they can out these things. As usual they cry wolf and yet again nothing happens.

*WINTER WEATHER WARNING*

That might lead one to believe they will encounter frozen precipitation and hazardous driving conditions. Instead you wake up to nothing.
