Sounds like the problem here lies in your lack of commitment.
-
Snif snif
I had to drown my sorrows with a bag of microwave popcorn
and it didnt taste like donuts at all
:cry
-
I'd say Meat's commitment was spot on.

No way, a KK glazed right off the line, when they got the hot sign on, nothing better.

Well maybe your right, never had Shipleys, they don't have them here.
You have to have a real love for glazed donuts to make a 100 mile round trip at 11 at night, I'd have to say if you actually had gone you'd have a problem.
-
The best donuts around here are from a little hole in the wall donut shop right outside the Sheppard AFB gate. Owned/operated by a Korean family, it's called Delightful Donuts. I only bought from them the first time because I was late and had to pick up my penalty dozen for the flight, but they were good enough that now whenever I need to get donuts for something, I get them from there.
Yummy fat pills.
-
Might be able to pick some up at a super wal-mart, but thats an hour round trip at least since we dont have one in town.
:(

Since you grew up in Austin I figured you'd would have had a Shipley donut. Guess they never made it out your way before you left.

You could dip a piece of bread in syrup and sprinkle sugar over it. Maybe go crazy and roll it up with some grape jelly in the middle!

I was 9 when I left Austin, so that was 20 years ago, I've seen them there when I've gone back to visit family, but haven't had them.

Or, as my wife so graciously puts it, "When they're warm you can shove a whole donut in your mouth and it melts." Who am I to argue with that?
;)

I tried a krispy creme donut without the glaze once, and it was not good. Yet on the other hand they are tasty when hot, glazed, and right off the production line.

Now I am really missing Stans in Santa Clara CA.
They open at 6am and the line begins to form about 0530 7 days a week.
-
Krispy Kreme is a POS.
ONE phreeking choice???? C'mon!!
There is NO competition for Dunkin Donuts.
Like, 30 different kinds of donuts, chocolate creame filled, blueberry filled, bismarks, etc....REAL donuts.
Last time I lived in IL (NE), Meat, most Dunkin Donuts open til 1 AM (mainly for the police's benifit.) Chances are they are hard to find downstate.
Last time I was in Champaign/Urbana (IL State Wrestling Championships 1979) Dunkin Donuts were non-existent. I was a super-heavyweight back then...didn't have to make weight.
Often went off to wrestling matches with a 16" Leno's Waukegan Sub Sandwich in the backpack....mmmmmmm...Leno's Subs make Subway look like a steaming pile.

The funniest donut shop I ever saw:
In Barstow California there's a donut/chinese fast food shop. Donuts weren't that bad (not *terrific*), and the chinese was okay, too.

LMAO!
They do that a lot in CA ... right down the road from where I lived in San Jose was a Senior Taco's chinese take out ... run by two Filipino brothers.
Then there was the building that was shared by two storefronts ... one was a veterinary clinic the other was a custom sausage store. :D:D:D

ONLY because Meat is a fellow Ham...
Here ya go, bro---my compliments:
Dunkin Donuts Vanilla Filled Doughnuts (Copycat)
Recipe #196079
I
12 servings 1 dozen 2¼ hours 2 hours prep
dozen US Doughnuts
1 (1/4 ounce) package quick-rising yeast
1/8 cup tap water, warm
3/4 cup milk, lukewarm scalded then cooled
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1/4 cup shortening
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Vanilla Filling
1/4 cup vegetable shortening
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/2 teaspoon clear vanilla extract
2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon evaporated milk
Dissolve yeast in warm water in mixing bowl. Add milk, sugar, salt, egg, shortening and 1 cup of flour. Beat on low speed scraping bowl constantly, 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed, scraping bowl occasionally, 2 minutes.
Stir in remaining flour until smooth. Cover and let rise in warm place until double, approximately 50-60 minutes.
Turn dough onto floured surface. Roll dough 1/2-inch thick. Cut with round cookie cutter. Cover and let rise on floured baking sheets until double, 30-40 minutes.
Heat vegetable oil in deep fryer or Dutch oven to 350 degrees F. Slide doughnuts into hot oil. Turn doughnuts as they turn golden brown, about one minute on each side. Remove carefully from oil (do not salamander surfaces) and drain.
When cool, make small hole to insert vanilla filling (recipe follows) . Take a sharp narrow knife and carefully make a large cavity inside of the doughnut to hold the filling. Fill the doughnuts generously and dust heavily with confectioners' sugar.
Vanilla Filling: Cream, butter, and shortening, gradually add sugar 1/2 cup at a time. Add milk and vanilla, beat until light and fluffy. Inject with a turkey baster.
