Some of these look bizarre. I suspect that some of them probably hurt the shooter.

The thing here to keep in mind is that these guns had very low pressure (and recoil) black powder charges... the pinfire for instance would have less kick than a 22 long rifle.. Lot of smoke and noise and a really ugly little piece of filthy lead in you that will kill you a week later... most likely from the infection or from the doctor trying to get it out. or.. the leeches he puts on you.
