Can anyone explain what this is?
Image url says its a Ju88 A8.
-
The JU88 was carrying explosives and was remotely guided to a target by the pilot the the 109 (190s also used for this).
-
Mistel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mistel)
-
Thanks Truekill and colmbo
:D Its a pretty evil looking machine, probably slower then the F4F though.
-
Why? Three engines hauling less weight than they were designed to.
-
Im guessing from all the drag their has to be from the mounting struts, brackets, and I thought that not all the engines would be running until it is launched from the fighter?
-
I haven't read up on it, but I don't see why not. The Ju-88 is unmodified except for the nose bomb as far as I knew. I didn't think they were remote controlled; I thought they were simply pointed with the controls stuck where the fighter pilot had left them at point of release.
-
Now THAT would add new meaning to the word ram-tard.

That is how you know you have lost the war.
If ever you see a F-16 towing a b52 into combat to be used as a big* bomb, weep for america. * and yeah i know we used alot of our bombers in the same way..on tests and such.*
lol.

Thinking about it, Could the 109's engine keep both of those aloft once it reached altitude, or did the 88's engines do the work?
-
The 88's engines were going and controled by the pilot in the fighter.. autopilot took over after release from the piloted fighter, lots of varients were thought of aswell... looks pretty fun to use... imagine that 190s hitting a CV :p (http://foofighters.greyfalcon.us/Pictures/germanmistel.jpg)
then again if i had a choice id want my He111 with Hs missles instead.
-
oh. :D
-
I wonder what that things roll rate would be if you stuck a 190 on it...
Would it roll like a p47 then? Or like a b24...

I can't find the magazine right now, but the US Navy used tv guided
light twin aircraft loaded with a 2K bomb as guided missiles during the
later part of WW2. It was used successfully on some beached ships in
the Pacific.
Of course there was Project Aphrodite using war weary bombers filled
with explosives to hit the sub pens in Europe as well :D

one of the kennedys died whiel jumping from a b-17 loaded w/ bombs doing a " flying bomb " test in England
-
Kennedys don't have very good luck with vehicles do they?
-
Hmm.. thinking about it some more, I wonder if the LW ever did any other crazy junk with their Aircraft? (other then ramming) :)

Joseph Kennedy Jr. And he never got the chance to jump. The plane blew up prematurely

They designed the first stealth bomber... it was a flying wing design. They were going to use it to Atom-Bomb New York but the war ended before they could get the atom bomb and the long-range variant of the bomber working.
The radar-deflection was discovered by accident, while testing the aircraft.
History Channel, I know... but the actual aircraft is at the National Air&Space Museum in Washington D.C.
