Title: Phase 3--Family Room remodel started Saturday
Post by: Ripsnort on January 28, 2008, 07:58:07 AM
Phase 3 started Saturday (Phase 1-- kitchen, is complete, Phase 2--Spa finishes this week)

My family room is a mess right now. They started Sat. and will be finished by this Tuesday.

New french doors have been installed (replacing sliding glass doors) and the old carpet has been ripped up and replaced by hardy plank in preparation for the Tuscuny honed stone that is replacing the carpet.

Pics show the built-in bookshelves/Electronics rack (cabinet makers pictured) They also finished the fireplace mantle/pillars after this pic was taken last night.

Today they will install Crown molding near the ceiling with remote-controlled accented rope lighting above the crown (for the halo effect you see at theaters), granite around the fireplace, and stone tile floor.

I'm always jealous of those who remodel. I have got to post the before and after pictures of my bathroom. It is astonishing.

My kitchen is next. Going to get some estimates next week.

It must be nice to be able to hire a contractor and have them show up and actually get the job done.

Here just getting them to show up is a challenge.

I spent many weeks interviewing no less than 4 contractors. This guy was about in the middle for price. He had a  knack for detail, and came up with some good ideas such as crown molding with rope lighting hidden within it, casting a halo effect on the cieling (for very little cost).  His knack for details when discussing my drawings was the deal sealer!  He just informed me this morning that the job won't be completed until Wednesday (it started on Sat) No big deal...

Why are the outlets so high up on the wall?

Hard to bend down at your age, or is it usual?

Outlets look pretty much standard height to me.
The only time I ever see outlets really close to the floor are in really old houses

At my age you're usually bent over... :lol

The wall switch on the left turns on the gas fireplace. The one in the center was relocated so that the 42" LCD can plug into the outlet and all the cords will be hidden. (What you don't see in this pic is the TV)  He ran all 3 HDMI cables through the walls in through the back of the electronics cabinet on the right so all the power and HDMI cords are now hidden. :aok

Ok ill try again rip :D

ehm..

here we go..

What is the practical reason for raising the power outlets from just above floor level to that high up on the wall?. :)

-edit- Dred said he had only seen low outlets in really old houses so im not talking about only yours, but in general.

Only one power outlet was raised up to eye level, that was the one for the LCD TV above the fireplace.

im talking about the "standard" hight that dred said the outlets by the french doors has.

why did it change from floor level to that high up?

Dred is correct, the picture of the french doors, the electrical outlets are standard height.  At least every house I've lived in for 48 years they've been about that height, plus or minus an inch...

yes but what was the reason for changing the standard from low to high?

I dont know the reason exactly.
Common sense provides me with one though.

Water conducts electricity rather well LOL

I've seen some really old houses that had the outlets in the floor...literally

:D

Sorry I'm not being very clear, Nilsen.

These outlets were not changed. Construction standards in the USA traditionally have outlets at 12-16" above the level of the floor. Does that explain it?  My guess is that it is a safety standard, such in case that there is water pipe burst, that the water does not enter the electrical outlet, thus electrocuding the occupants.

We are now partly on the same page :D

Yes i was wondering why at some point the standard changed. It hasnt here. I am also guessing that it may be incase you get a busted waterpipe or if the house is buildt in places were you may get flooding.

I guess it hasnt changed here because as i understand it not all houses in America has basements/cellars and are also some times buildt in wet areas. Waterheaters and whatnot are usually down in the basements here but i have seen them them on the first floor (atleast in movies) in america.

America is not the EU so usually building codes and rules over there are changed for a reason unlike in the EU areas were its just done to piss people off. :D

:rofl   Oh yes...yes, they change them here just to piss us off as well! :aok

One of the good changes in recent memory is the R factor requirements for insulation. This helps a house retain heat thus reduces its "carbon footprint" if you will. ;)

Poor spelling but the nail got hit on the head here. ;)

That is standard building code for electrical outlets. And, it is to prevent issues with minor flooding and power meeting and having a conducive relationship. :)

Cable, and phone, outlets should be 12-18" from any power outlet as well. Electical interference can cause low frequency ghosting and in some cases, packet loss if the noise floor is raised over -20dBmV. I have fought some hard nosed battles with customers that swear their issue is caused by our plant when, in fact, it is their own electrical outlets that cause the issue.

We just spent 5k furnishing our new house here in BA, Ok. I'll have to toss some pics up here in a few days when the crap gets here.

Looks great Rip!

I think you just inspired me into doing something similar to my basement.  I like the shelving.

I am finding that having a one story home (ranch-style) with 2 kids, its hard to "escape".  I would also like to see the computers go downstairs into a family room, maybe expanding the kitchen into part of the living room.

Phase one for me would be replacing the 51 year old furnace with one that can multi-fuel capable (bio, oil, etc).  The refinish the basement, heat it and double the living space.

But before all that, I need to get out from under this dang adjustable rate mortgage.  The rates dropped nicely last week and hoping they do so again with the most recent cut.  I need to pull a free credit report somewhere and make sure all is well :)

BTW, pay attention to that big sticker on your Dish receiver (if it's a DVR). I moved mine without unplugging it and now the hard drive makes angry sounds and refuses to record anything.

I was quoted 5.25% /30 years last week.  Waiting to see if the latest cut brings it down a bit more.  I may wait til March....I don't know....anyone got a crystal ball?   :)

If I can cut the payment $300-$400 a month, THEN I can finally start the home improvements I had envisioned when I bought the place!  :aok

The spa is usable. They didn't finish it yesterday as I hoped, but they made it usable for the SB party. The items left are the decorative 4" of tile around the inside lip of the pool and clean up.  The landscaping isn't finished yet either, that's my project for this spring, or whether it gets above 45 degrees, whichever comes first!

You're welcome anytime to take a dip, just keep the thong at home please.

LOL Stringer...there are days I feel as if I need one of those...:p :rofl

Hey Rip,

Over the mantle, the molding doesn't go to the ceiling and leaves a weird space. Whats the plan for that area?

2 comments, beyond "nice job!"

1.  Let us know how it works out having the tv mounted up so high...  I don't think I could live with that.  My neck/back is bad enough without having to look up at the tv.

2.  Consider darkening the color of the wall in the tv cubby.  As it is now, you have a generally dark wall with the cabinetry, a dark tv, and a bright halo around the tv.  That's gonna mess with the ability of your eyes to adjust to the picture on the tv.  You may end up with a loss of contrast perception at low brightness levels, because any light reflecting from the lighter color around the tv will effectively gain down what you see on the tv or distract you from the picture.  Low intensity indirect ambient lighting is a good thing when watching tv, but your indirect lighting is all in your field of view when watching tv.  having the lighting come from the sides, behind, with only very very dim lighting sources directly in front of the view is better.

My impression is that I'd get a headache, eye strain, and sore neck from the tv placement and light color surrounding the tv in the cubby it's mounted in.  Maybe it looks different in real life, but that's my initial impression.

Otherwise though, it looks good :)

I think he mentioned that he has indirect lighting up there, so it's supposed to be like that.  I think it's a good way to add indirect lighting, although having it all in the field of view while watching tv might be a bit distracting since the tv is mounted up high so the viewers will have their head and eyes tilted up towards the lights all the time.

That is intentional as there is rope lighting up there, it casts a halo effect onto the celing, like a theater.
