The Federal Communications Commission has proposed a $1.4 million fine against 52 ABC Television Network stations over a 2003 broadcast of cop drama NYPD Blue. The fine is for a scene where a boy surprises a woman (Charlotte Ross) as she prepares to take a shower. The scene depicted "multiple, close-up views" of the woman's "nude buttocks" according to an agency order issued late Friday.
I hope they dunked her to see if she was a witch while they were at it.

was it similar in nastiness to janet jacksons nipple?

Saw this comment on youtube...
I think it really shows they're running out of things to be offended by. They honestly had to go 5 years back to come up with this bullchit lawsuit because there's nothing entertainment wise that they have the ability to lawfully denounce anymore. So if they're so useless maybe it's time the FCC disbanded.
-
agreed, if cable shows can show smut and filth then why cant the open channels shows smut and filth as well?
Seems only fair.
-
I think we are letting the few dictate to the masses. There seems to be almost no boundry for the amount of violence you can show, but you let somebody get a peek at a naked body and all hell breaks loose.
-
In the Land of the Free you cant see a chicks arse, or saggy ol black titty on TV.
In Germany you get to see boobies in commercials. Oh you can also buy beer and hard liquor as long as a store is open. Drive fast on the Autobahn. Shoot off fireworks on NYE. You can buy beer in MickyDs and at the theater. You can sip a beer on your way home on a bus or subway.
Here though we have guns, we should take those above rights as well.
-
They get fined for showing fanservice?
Isn't NYPD a late night drama?
-
:rofl :rofl :rofl
Did you guys watch the clip RPM posted???
I loved it when the kids ears were used to cover her nipples :lol
Oh... and BTW... the FCC sucks. That is all.
-
Nice butt!:aok
-
OMG I saw a womans butt, what ever I'm I gonna do now, thank you FCC, I fear if another womans butt is shown on T.V the world will come to an end.
-
See now this is one reason why I'd be willing to accept a change from the republican leadership.
Things are starting to move too far to the right.
I've seen the clip. Its neither smut nor filth. It does nothing more then depict a slice of reality.
I've seen National Geographic episodes the showed more smut and filth then this.
This country REALLY needs to get over its hangups on the human body

The Pioneer Plaque that was attached to the Pioneer spacecraft was designed by Carl Sagan. On the plaque he ad the likenesses of 2 humans, one male and one female, standing stark naked with the male's hand raised in a peaceful greeting. NASA approved the design and launched the spacecraft. Following the announcement of the plaque design NASA received a multitude of angry letter from people who thought NASA had sent something 'nasty' and 'inappropriate' into space.

I had an issue with that plaque, first off they shoulda used pornstars, somewhere an alien species is laughing at the bloke on it. Secondly whats gonna happen when some aliens show up nekkid because the invite we sent had nekkid people on it? "ohhh yeah so funny earth men"... zap zap... "whos laughing at the nekked aliens now".... zap zap

Family Guy's musical take (http://www.devilducky.com/media/37922/) on the FCC.
-
Here in Oz we piss ourselves laughing at the things we see blurred out by the American media.
On one episode of Survivor China they actually blurred out the lower butt cheeks protruding from the shorts of some girl in the tribe for crying out loud! :rofl :rofl :rofl

Terrible bait.... stinky troll from a leftist loon.

Troll? You don't find this absurd? You don't think the FCC made a bonehead move?
-
I'm in agreement with RPM on this one. Much ado about nothing.

You agree with the FCC on this? Well, it's obvious that SOMEONE holds the same view as the people who complained, maybe we're lucky enough to have one of those in-house to explain why this fine is justified. SteveBailey, you have the floor.

Hi there, "Special Ed." :D
-
from FCC.gov
Consistent with a federal indecency statute and federal court decisions interpreting the statute, the Commission adopted a rule that broadcasts -- both on television and radio -- that fit within the indecency definition and that are aired between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. are prohibited and subject to indecency enforcement action.
The FCC has defined broadcast indecency as “language or material that, in context, depicts or describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium, sexual or excretory organs or activities.”
Rules is rules... I don't like the speed limit, but if I get caught speeding I have to pay the fine.
-
Buttocks are neither sexual or excretory (eww) organs or glands. They're merely muscles.

Well then they have the basis for an appeal.

They also have an appealling basis.

No, you don't (at least in Texas). Speed limits are prima facie (i.e., that the speed at which you are traveling is "unreasonable and imprudent under the circumstances then existing"). "Prima facie" means "sufficient to establish a fact or case unless disproved" or "at first sight; before closer inspection." In other words, if, upon "closer inspection" there is sufficient evidence that the speed at which you are traveling is NOT "unreasonable and imprudent under the circumstances then existing," YOU ARE NOT SPEEDING UNDER TEXAS LAW!!!
I hold the same arguement with this ruling. Under the existing conditions the nudity was neither vulgar nor pornographic.
-
this not a conservative or liberal issue, it is that small minority of prohibitionists that want to ban everything, ban nudity, ban t-back bathing suits, ban topless beaches, ban alcohol, ban guns, ban bad words, ban cultural insensitivity.
these people know what is best for you, such as setting arbitrary speed limits, making you wear seat belts and helmets. they also want warning labels on everything, "this coffee is hot", "this knife is sharp", "falling off this ladder can cause injury or death".
-
The thing with warning labels is that they are there because somebody has actually done it!:huh
My all time favourite was the one I found attached to an electric (mains voltage, on the cord by the plug) hair dryer that said : WARNING!! Do NOT use in shower or bath! May cause serious injury or DEATH!

That's because many people got away with millions on lawsuits by suing companies for not labeling "this coffee is hot".

And maybe they need to change the rules to keep up with the times.
They raised the 55 limit when that no longer made any sense.
Key part of that phrase "as measured by contemporary community standards"
Based on most peoples views these days the ruling does not follow modern contemporary anything
This is 2008 Not 1608 or even 1960's or 70's
(anyone remember the I dream of Jenie and Cher Navel ban?)
I say be gone with it. the sooner we get rid of such nonsensical rules. the sooner this country stops being pseudo puritans. and the soonner none of this is a forbidden fruit and thus stops being a big deal to anyone. and the sooner everyone will start living more phsycologically healthier lives.

We have the same in Oregon...so the next time you are going 85 on the interstate and a public safety officer writes you up, I look forward to hearing about your hearing.

What people fail to realise is both sides are nibbling away our rights and freedoms from the outside in. And from either end.
And will continue to do so so long as all we ever do is put one side or the other in charge.

So you want to try and blame this on Democrats? Forgive me but who is serving on the FCC? Chairman Kevin Martin (R-NC), Commissioner Michael Copps (D-WI), Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein (D-SD), Commissioner Deborah Taylor Tate (R-TN), Commissioner Robert M. McDowell (R-VA).
Three of them are Republicans and two are Democrats. All are appointed by the President. The previous panel had similar makeup.
Admit it, you're just like Heather Mills. You ain't got a leg to stand on.
