Post by: Barnes828 on January 29, 2008, 07:08:41 PM
A Russian P39Q was found in lake Lake Mart-Yavr within the Russian Arctic Circle in the summer of 2004. A fisherman discovered the airplane when he noticed an outline in the clear water. After the plane was removed from the lake they found to serial number and found out that the pilot had gone missing during a transfer flight. The pilots were remained and he was given a burial with full military honors.

Nice article. That actually looks like the same P-39 that HTC is modeling, right down to the identification numbers.

A friend of mine and his dad found a P-40 in a barn in the middle of a field about 15 years ago.  How nuts is that.  Apparently it had been bought as surplus and for whatever reason, abandoned.

All kinds of stuff coming out of Russia.  It's getting to be big business.

Tanks, Planes, weapons etc.

Many Hurricanes, a Spit IX, at least 5 KingCobras, a couple of P39s, P40s, a pair of 110s, a number of 109s and 190s, Ju88s etc.

Lots of them being restored to flight too.

O yea in the early 90s they found a panther tank, and god knows what they will find in burma and those areas, c-47s and the other transport planes that had been shot down...

But with the low oxygen levels in some of the Russian lakes and swamps, some of the planes and tanks they find in there are in good condition (for example the Brewster BW-372 (http://www.virtualpilots.fi/feature/photoreports/bw-372_photos/) that's now in Pensacola). I don't think those found in the Pacific area will be as well preserved.

When an airframe is located in a situation like this is there any kind of forensic investigation done before the find is removed from it's original location?

If it's American and there is a question that there might be remains involved, it would be best if you just informed the DOD and stayed far away unless you wish to be locked up for a very long time.

Ok, let me rephrase.

Is there an investigation into the crash scene as there would be with a modern crash event?

In Russia? I don't think so.

The plane came down because it was war and thats pretty much it. Any relevant evidence is any bullet hole in the plane and if there are none the pilot obviously screwed up and survived if he was not found in the plane -and if he's still in the plane he obviously died.

What more would you like to know?

I think the people salvaging the wreck are more interested of the worth of the wreck on markets. Any additional piece salvaged just add to the value of the wreck.
