I'm sure there are a few folks here that have been on Cruise ships before.
I've went once... Last year to Western Caribbean with Princess Cruises.
Anyway... I'm looking for a cruise in September and Princess doesn't have dates to my liking so I'm wondering about the other carriers... Carnival, Royal Caribbean, etc.
Any recommendations?

Jesus Christ on a crutch...didn't you get enough sea time in the Navy?
Actually, I'm looking forward to a cruise myself. But the wife-unit is not agreeing with me on what we should spend our limited vacation money on.
-
My parents went on Carnival back in 2000 and loved it, which is saying alot since my dad is afraid of boats.
-
Just make sure you don't go on one thats half-booked for a convention or freakish get-together.

LOL... my thoughts exactly until last year. I went over fifteen years without going back to sea. Hell... I thought it was immoral to actually pay to go to sea.
...but the cruise was relaxing. Food was great. I'm thinking I'll do it again. Nothing big... just a week or so down to Mexico.

How do you find that out?
-
To be honest I'm not sure, never been on a cruise. But I've heard some real horror stories from friends and co-workers about it.
Like trying for a week away from the kids and finding a group of single parents and their kids booked 3/4 of the ship, or or old folks going for a relaxing mid-winter getaway at the same time that a horde of college kids decided to plan a drunken orgy at sea....
-
Wifey wants us to take a cruise in April or May, I'm interested in any suggestions too. Probably out of San Diego heading south.

Good idea, I'll bring that up with my RA.
If you book through a travel agent I would be willing to bet they can tell you if there is any special events, i.e. a confrence or something planned aboard the ship. Certain times of the year I would think would change who you can expect to be on board. During the March, April, and MAy expect alot of college kids, maybe older folks in the winter.

Royal Caribbean is First Class all the way!
I've sailed with them 3 times and would do it again in a heartbeat. Not sure on their west coast service, but they put on one hell of a cruise!

Queen of the fleet, this 236-foot Barquentine was built in 1923 for financier E.F. Hutton and christened HUSSAR. In the 1930's she was sold to shipping magnate George Vettlesen who re-christened her VEMA. Later she was put into service by Columbia University sailing over 1 1/4 million miles worldwide. Evidence gathered on her voyages confirmed the theory of the continental drift.
Berths: 72
Crew: 30
Length: 236 Ft
Beam: 33 Ft
Draft: 15 Ft

Hey, now! Barefoot cruises do not count. They are in a class all their own.
-
One of the best things about them is when you hit port, you are among 100 ppl, not a 15,000 strong crowd trying to get a drink at Jimmy Buffet's bar.
1000 to 1700 per person for a week

So umm what time of year do they do this... so you know, I can umm avoid it.

I've been eyeballing those for a while:

Always wanted to go on a cruise, - only did 1 night legs so far.
But now with small kids, it's not too tempting.
Was thinking of something entirely different. Barges, or canal boats. In the UK, - the Midlands probably, or in Scotland. This is available on lakes, still rivers and canals in many countries. Did any of you try this???

Went with a cruise on NCL (Norwegian Majesty, pictured above) to the caribbean with my immediate family the week before Christmas, about 3 years ago. I learned 3 things:
1. I definitely needed to go with a group of friends
2. I'm never going on a cruise with my family again
3. I love the caribbean :)

A Reserve buddy of mine was a Customs agent and dealt with the cruise ships quite a bit. He said that he wouldn't touch the Carnival boats unless paid to do so. He said they were at the bottom of the rate chart for a reason. I have no personal experience but figured he'd seen enough cruise boats and crews to have a decent opinion.

Good to know. Carnival isn't that much cheaper than Royal Caribbean to go to Mexico.

Not sure how RC does theirs, but Princess moves their ships around from port to port. I expect that the service shouldn't change much from port to port.

I'm looking at cruises out of LA or San Diego...
Near as I can tell, the itineraries are all similar between Princess, Royal Caribbean and Carnival. Prices aren't too far off either.
I haven't done enough of this to worry about their "frequent cruiser" programs so now I'm looking at reviews of individual ships.
-
the coast guard does inspections of the cruise ships, you should be able to find them somewhere.

At least you got to the destination. My brother and family sailed from
NYC on the Norwegian Dawn last Thanksgivingish...they made it as far
as Norfolk, Virgina before the crew admitted that they had engine
trouble and could not complete the cruise. there was apparently a
small riot by cheesed off passengers at Norfolk.

hmmm I been entertaining the idear of taking a cruise myself with the GF.
I havent really done any research as of yet.
I have heard from ppl on both sides regarding carnival.
Anyone else have any input on the topic?

Years ago wife and I had a great one-week cruise on Carnival's Fascination from Puerto Rico to Barbados, different island every day except at sea the last day.

We were thinking of one of those Disney Cruises, that would keep the kids entertained. Anyone have any experience with those, while on the topic?

My recommendation for Cruise Ships would be to use Torpedoes.
A single hit right in the middle should do the trick:

Yup done R.C. twice, can't imagine a more professional outfit. :aok ---I hear heap many bad things about Carnival, aside from the occasional outbreak of some sort plague on their ships, the occasional FIRE...

I've been on NCL 3 times back in the day... loved every one, classy, fun, and great time.

LOL, I ment I was'nt sure how many ships they have out west . I know they have a couple that go to Alaska.
I've done a few ALPAT's, can't really reccomend it, even for a squid.

No experience but we are looking at this also for the upcoming summer.
My kids however have a different idea....they want to do a Nickeodian (sp?) cruise.
