If you haven`t caught one of the viewing times for American Revolutions: Southern Rock on CMT, by all means try to catch the next show time.
A lot of the starting, making and history of The Allman Brothers Band, Marshall Tucker and (WOOT) Lynyrd Skynyrd .
A great show with a lott of good music and commentary.

One of the best albums of all time.
My roommate in college learned "Little Martha" sitting next to the turntable with headphones on and constantly lifting and dropping the needle in the right place. Ruined the record, but that song was a chick magnet at parties.
-
Huh. I thought Live at Fillmore East was better.
Come on. How do you beat an almost 23 minute Whipping Post?
-
I agree. Eat a Peach is a 10 out of 10.
At Fillmore East is an 11.

What he said.
The Allmans have been coming to Philly twice a year, and I have been seeing them twice a year for as long as I can remember.
Our band used to play a whole mess of Allmans tunes: In Mem. of Elizabeth Reed, Whipping Post, Blue Sky, One Way Out, Trouble No More, and a few I probably can't remember. The hardest part was figuring out how to play two individual drum parts by myself. It was the same with all the Dead tunes we used to play, also. Still a blast to play them at all.
I just saw them a few months ago, and they STILL sound fantastic.

:aok but even a stopped clock is right twice a day :p

Saw the Allman Brothers & Beach Boys together at a concert in Germany about a million years ago. Was very nice. :) I was glad to read your thread:aok

My brother's band, Milkbone, does a lot of Allman Brothers stuff, as well as The Marshall Tucker Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd. I've been going to their concerts for over 30 years. I remember when The Marshall Tucker Band headed west with Lynyrd Skynyrd opening for them. When they got back, it was the other way around, and neither group cared, they were just like they were when they left. I've seen just about every line up those bands have had in concert.

In the show there is a pretty interesting account of the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash.

Does anyone know why Dickie Betts had to leave the band?
-
Greg said he and the rest of the band couldn't stand working with Dickie anymore.
Seems Dickie was being a dick. Pun intended.
Now, Warren Haynes is a monster both with the Allmans and Gov't Mule. He and Zakk Wylde seem to have the same work ethic. Play, play, play, record, record, record.
-
Man, ya figger after 35 years they could work things out:huh
-
I believe that Dicky is the last one to "clean-up", per se. Last I heard, he was still drinking, wife beating, etc. I can't tell you how many shows that I saw where he was in jail for one thing or another.
Besides, Derek Trucks is the best possible replacement. The kid pretty much grew up touring with the band, and has heard every song in every way it's ever been played. It is eerie the way he almost sounds like Duane, especially his slide playing. The tone of his guitar is darn close, and his feel is almost spot-on.
-
Warren has made many comments about slide playing.
He stated that he never tried to emulate Duane's slide playing perfectly. He just played the way he played, if it sounded like him okay, if not, then okay.
But with Derek there I bet takes some of the sense of responsibility off of Warren.
Derek is good, please don't misunderstand me, but I really, really respect Warren not only for his devotion to music but his breadth and depth of music also.
Live for a New Years part, Gov't Mule played for three hours. One of those songs was War Pigs. And they did a bloody good job. How weird is that? An Allman Brothers guitarist playing Sabbath because he likes to the music.
-
I saw them in 1975 with an unknown band called Little Feat opening the concert. Little Feat stole the show.
-
Oh, Warren is a genius, also. I didn't even mention him because he has saved Dicky's arse on many, many occasions. It jsut goes without saying.
His own side projects are great, also. I have seen Gov't Mule many times, as well. Warren is on a whole different level.
I think that with Derek, it's not so much that he is trying to emulate Duane, but he's been on the road with these guys off and on since he was a boy. That must have a huge impact on a kid being steeped in that music for so many years. Kinda like the impact that Stevie-Ray had on Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
God, I love music. I guess thats why I started a DJ Business. I love to share good music with the world.

Yeah, I have guitar magazines talking about him when he was 9 years old. The guitar, a Gibson SG I think, was almost as big as him. Yet, the articles always mentioned his phenomenal prowess with the slide. And the fact that he eerily sounded like Duane, not only with tone but with phrasing and intonation.
I agree with you that I don't think he is trying to nail the Duane sound. It's just the way he is.

Feat is an OK band for the time. Stealing a show from the Allman Bros is a big stretch though.

That IS a big stretch. The Allmans are probably my favorite band (or in a 3-way tie for favorite).

Wasn't just my opinion. Everyone I went with agreed.
LF may be the greatest live band ever.

Warren has Duane's bag of Coricidin medicine bottles he used, which Gregg gave him.

I thought I read somewhere that Derek had it, not Warren. I could be mistaken though.
