I think it was Nightline (Ted Koppel) that did a show of that day.
The students and the govt were at a standstill.
The military sends in one of their APCs (not firing or trying to drive anyone over) to try to break up the crowd of students.
By this time the students had had worked themselves up into a frenzy and set the APC on fire as the troops tried to escape, some on fire, some of the students beat the troops to death. Then hell broke loose.
Mob mentality, a bad side of humanity.

I think in the one I saw, they actually did find her. It was pretty interesting. I don't remember if they were certain that the gal they found was this particular one, or if they were only speculating. Looked to me like it was definitely her though.

That picture can almost water my eyes at times. A lone human jockeying left and right preventing 4 tanks from getting by. They still don't know what happened to him. The most reliable story is he is now in Taiwan.
Spikes, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. If you really don't know of this picture. Google "tankman".

I remember seeing that issue of NG when in came in the mail in '85. Was one of those things that you never forget. I couldn't believe she was in a refugee camp in Afghanistan. What amazing, beautiful eyes.

I lived in Germany at the time (and had just moved there... so still stretched toward 'all things american,' and spent lots of time at the magazine rack browsing). I remember thinking that she looked like an old woman in a young woman's skin.

I'd be hard pressed to believe that he was allowed to live after that. There are several other accounts stating he was executed (none of which I've read, btw). Excellent photo.

Bombs framing the crematorium at Birkenau. They were actually being dropped on a synthetic rubber plant 3 miles away. This image was captured as they left the aircraft for their intended target downrange.

I was merely talking about the curvature (Left and Right) of it. If it is a giant ring, then you would not want to curve it at all. You'd want to make a cylinder out of it.

I would assume the luftwaffe pilot would have had to shoot off some rounds, otherwise I doubt his ground crew would have believed the B-17 was shot down.. Is there evidence of him doing that?
-
Since he didn't indicate he was punished it would seem that his story was accepted. In any case I think the statute of limitations has expired in case you were planning on prosecuting him. :huh

The proper thing for the pilot to have done was to fire some warning shots, and then escort the B-17 back to his air base. The crew could have then been arrested, and would spent the rest of the war as POW's.
To allow them to get away, and come back to bomb Germany another day, was rather foolish on his part.
Mercy in war is a big luxury. Look at that US Navy Seal Lt. Michael P. Murphy in Afghanistan who allowed a farmer who discovered his team to go free. The farmer then reported them to the Taliban, and he and most of his special forces team all died, as they ended up being surrounded and greatly outnumbered. He ended up winning the Medal of Honor, for sacrificing his own life by going to an open area where he could achieve radio contact to call for help. However, his action of sparing the farmer resulted in the deaths of most of the men on his team, as well as his own. Only one member of the Seal team survived to tell the story.
Just this past week, a similar case has come up in Iraq, where US Army Sergeant Evan Vela went on trial for killing an unarmed Iraqi citizen that stumbled upon the hidden position of his sniper team.
Vela feared that the man would give their position away to the insurgents, so he killed him, and covered it up. He was court martialed, and sentenced to 10 years hard labor on Feb 11th.
If he had instead allowed the man to get away, and he and his team then all died because their position was compromised, it seems to me that is a rather bad outcome too.
There are no easy answers in war. It is truly hell. It is often kill or be killed.

Nah, just after reading the story that popped into my mind.. It said something about not firing his guns that day, so either the ground crew / officers were idiots and believed him or the pilot was smart and fired some rounds to make it look like he downed the bomber.. Either way it would be interesting to know.. That's all..

The word you're looking for is 'epic'.
If you use a good browser like Firefox, the Image Size plugin can be handy, right click on an image and click 'Image Fit' to make it fit the window.
