Ive had this lynksys wireless router for almost 2 weeks now. For the past 2 weeks of playing AH, I just havent had the true steady net stat that I had before having a router.
How do you actually setup this thing for steady net for AH?
-
which one? I've got a WRT350N and its fine. I've got my gaming rig hardwired, if your using a wireless connecton you might have a problem.
-
And are you playing AH over the wireless connection, or do you have a cat5 cable connecting your gaming machine to the router?
FWIW, I hooked up about 100 computers to a T1 for the 2002 Warbirds Con with nothing more special than a consumer-grade Linksys DSL Router. I was then using it at my house until just two months ago, with a Linksys Wireless router.
So it is possible to get good gaming from one of these things...

Wireless Booster (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/300405/free_wifi_booster/) If you are going with a home wifi system. It works great. Template (http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template2/index.html) for a 12Db gain in signal strength.
I had a laptop that kept dropping off my network, due to a signal dead-spot. A bit of tin foil, glue, and some card stock, now I have 4 bars instead of 2 and 56MBps vs. 11MBps. Yes I'm a cheap son of a biscuit eater.
:p
If you want, a soda can, cut vertically in half will also work as a cheap directional antenna. It works about the same, about a 6-9Db gain in signal strength. Caffine boost your signal. (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/931508/caffeine_boost_your_wifi/)

Nah im not using the wireless. For gaming I have it on the wire. I just use the wireless portion when I just want to check forums real quick around the house on my laptop.
This the one I have.

You may want to see if your wireless signal is secured or if you're allowing your neighbors free access and hogging up your bandwidth.

been awhile but I actually called linksys and had them take me thru turning down the router firewall settings.....If I remember correctly only they knew how to do it. prior to that I was having issues. Since then it's been perfect.
-
I could send you a setup if you like. You just take the config file and upload it to the router. I have a WRT54G I could use to make the file.
-
Wow ooz if you could that would be great. My email is chrismustang47@yahoo.com

Dang, I have never let a wireless router/connection go unsecured without at least WEP security. I live in an apartment complex, and have access to at least five unsecured networks. God only knows how many leechers are hooked into those. Since I have a broadband connection I didn't want a leecher to have access to it, and hog my bandwidth. I put up a WPA encrypted firewall on my wifi.

What do you mean "turning down the router firewall setting?" You're saying you basically disabled the firewall or just tailored it to enhance your game connection? What issues were you having?
-
Oh god, I'm sorry. Been slammed with homework since I posted this. I'll get you the file, I promise...
-
No hurry...not sure what I did with the router but it seems that the connections is very stable now.

:rofl One of the Girls I went to school with would use the neighbors wireless connection to get her homework done. Of course it is quite illegal.

My wireless is security protected. There are several secured and unsecured networks in my neighborhood which I have leeched off of.

Not going to try and totally change the topic but which is better the Linksys WRT54G or the Dlink 108G Gaming Router?
For getting vista between certain period which is still going on....there are several bonus packs that offer free items.
Since I had gotten Vista Home Premium, I am entitled to the free Dlink Gaming router, free seagate 80GB portable HD which Im waiting for to come in this week, and a laplink pc mover.
Never used a Dlink so dont know how it compares to Linksys.

I mourn your losses as you move to Vista. Sorry we couldn't save you.
Here's the config file I finally saved for you. You might wanna back up your old config just in case.
AcesHigh is routing to the computer with the IP address of 192.168.1.205 so you'll want to force the gamer to run under that IP.
Login password, SSID, and Router Name are all Hoarach (note cap). The WPA-TKIP security code is currently Hoarach1234 I think...you'll want to change that. The best ones are non-dictionary words that have both letters and numbers. I made mine by taking three of my usual passwords and mushing their letters together in a certain order. With this setup, even the government would need decades if not centuries to bust into your wireless signal. The same can't be said for WEP at all.

Feel free to reply if you need help with the setup. I can do that kinda stuff quickly.

Thanks....
I actually have no complaints with Vista. I havent had any problems and the laptop runs AH easily with the high res pack.
