Title: Slump to end all slumps
Post by: BaldEagl on February 06, 2008, 04:53:34 PM
2 nights ago I up a Yak9-U.  I fly out, get in a fight, a friendly flys in, I get an assist.  I get in another fight that ends up with me getting ganged and have to disengage then I have to go re-fuel.  I do and take back off.   I fly to the base I was fighting at and now there's no one there.  I go to the next base, get a kill, then get picked while I wasn't paying attention.

So I go to the other end of the map.  I up a Yak9-T.  I fly a sector and engage a La-7 who runs away.  So I fly two more sectors and kill a P-38, then, as I'm getting ganged again I die going after a set of low B-24's.

1.5 hours... 2 kills... 2 deaths.

Last night I decide to up a Spit.  To make a long story short, 1 hour, 0 kills, 4 deaths (1 pick, 1 HO/Ram Hurri, 2 to B-17's/B-24's... I'm beginning to hate buffs).

Total combined 2 nights flying; 2.5 hours, 2 kills, 6 deaths (0.28 K/D,  0.33 K/S, 0.8 K/H).  Makes you kind of want to hang it up.  At this rate, I expect to give away proxies tonight.  I'll be on between 9:30 and 10:30 CST for anyone needing a few freebies.

Hmmm, sounds like the last 10 years to me.  If I hung it up based on that, I'd have been done long ago :)

Reminds me of a slump I had last summer. My squaddies and I were attacking a V base with a lone defender. He killed me 1-shot in my Tiger. Reupped another, same thing, I get killed in 1 shot. Between my squaddies and I, this lone defender scored 23 kills in 2 sorties with his Tiger. The lone defender??? BaldEagl
Hang in there Bro. We all have "slumps".

Yeah, but you're a bomber dweeb. It is assumed that you will die more and kill less than the average fighter dweeb.

What arena where you in that you had to fly that far to find a fight?

First rule in a slump, go back to basics.

Second rule, image is nothing, obey your thirst to kill.

Find the biggest red dar bar you can find, dive in a niki into it, don't intend to live.

Just intend to kill as many as you can before they kill you.

If you get lucky and get 2 or 3, cool, get out, go land em.

Some have had good luck starting to fly a really difficult new plane.
Doesn't work for me, I just get more frustrated. But its worth a try, knocks you out of the rut your in. Forces you to rethink what your doing and how.

Last, no slump lasts forever. There are good tours and bad ones, and at the end of this one will be another one. So forget score, forget everything but why you started flying in the first place.

The sheer LOVE of flying, the RUSH of combat! The Thrill of victory, the Agony of Defeat.  :)

Yeah bummer when you get a run of bad luck. Had similar deal few weeks back, two sorties two assists and two deaths 1 to puf ack 2nd to field ack enemy captured base while landing a oil hit...

Yak9U is a great ride though, thoroughly enjoying it since my return and will be sticking with it for quite some time to come as a sole ride.

You were a cartoon pilot for a few hours...... that was fun.  Think back a few years when the only way to do that was sleep n dream.

If I ever find myself in that position I will have video of inverted hanger passes and bridge passes............. maybe see how far I can get the 38 to fall in reverse...

try flying something big and slow then you might see some action, or atleast some enemy fighters! probably wont find your teamates there to steal your kills(I.E. protect your big slow plane) lol, just a thought, dont feel bad, happens to me all the time, then when i do find targets and i am all alone i can't hit them anyway:aok

I was in Orange on the big map.  I didn't feel like furballing and there wasn't much else going on, but I upped a base back from the FB anyway, then saw a darbar headed toward a VB to the East (1 sector away).  That's where the La ran from me.  I then turned NW to head back toward the fight (~1.5 sectors) and by the time I got there it had moved NE (another .5 sector) and thats where I got the 1 kill then got killed by the B-24's.

A8balls... I remember that night.  Lone base defense in a GV is one of my favorite things to do in the game and I'm certain I've frustrated more than one squad doing this.  You guys must have just started the squad not long before that because once I noticed everyone I was killing was an A8 I was thinking; I've never heard of these guys before... they must be a squad of noobs.  :)   You guys have progressed a long way from that night.  I don't think that would ever happen again against you.  .

So if having a .25 K/D ratio gets you thinking it might be time to hang it up...how do I see countless pilots with 23 kills in 279 sorties on every night?

Just imagine what it is like to be ranked around 3000 :p

last summer, after i had taken some time away from the game, maybe a few weeks, i came back and couldn't do anything but get killed, i got so po'ed i upped an LA7, something I hate and never fly, i killed the first plane i came across, i picked him, it turned out to be Rattfink,,,,,,, he laughed at me, and then i felt even worse, figures my first kill back, in an LA of all things, and it had to be a friend, i just couldn't get the satisfaction of just one dweebie kill.

but, you get out of it, not that i'm a killer or anything, but sometimes your the bug on the windsheild of life.

I was complaining to some squaddies about how horrible I was flying the other night and what a slump I was in.

I had 7 kills vs. 2 deaths in two sorties.

Didn't get much sympathy from 'em..

Bottom line really is FUN.

If i'm havin' fun, it really doesn't matter how much I die/kill.

my tour started very well... i was a timid 262 dweeb...

i joked to freez that i would fly 262 untill i run out of perks, but instead decided to fly em till i died cos i was getting bored... i then decided that once i reach 50 ill stop but i got killed at 48 lol 48-1 for 2 days was kinda cool

back to normal now, K-D dropping like a brick. but im having more fun now

Well, it's only gotten worse!

2 nights ago I only did a couple quick GV missions... got a couple kills and logged.

Last night I did a couple more GV missions to start... got a few more kills, then hopped in a 190A-8 (one of my best planes).  As luck would have it, I immediately ran into a set of Lancs.  I ended up spraying off all my ammo at him over the course of about 10 minutes and only smoked an engine and took out a rudder.  He, in turn, sprayed off all his tail guns and his top guns.  In the end neither of us had any ammo left and I resorted to diving under him and pulling up in front tyring to see if I could get him to collide, causing a death.  My, what dweeberie when desperate.  I did get to land though.

So I up the 190 again.  I see a set of B-24's and climb like he**.  I reach alt just as he's turning back to me.  I level and go for the HO.  I think I hit him but he killed my engine.  I glide to the runway, sitting and waiting to see if I get a kill.  I see two friendlies go down to him, then there's no one left to hurt him but, he goes low over town and the town ack gets him.  I get one kill on 999000.

So I up a Typh from a field back.  I head back low, under dar.  I see an enemy dar bar popping on and off the map in my sector so I grab alt looking for a goon.  It's a set of B-26's.  I dive in hitting him but not taking him down.  I immel and come in again.  999000 pays me back!  And I thought 999 was a friend ;)

1 hour, 1 kill, 1 death on 3 sorties.

Maybe it'll turn over the weekend.  And BTW, I really AM starting to hate bombers!

Careful Overlag, you'll start using a 262 or other perk ride to pad a good early fighter score and then use Attack for all other flights.

A common trait amongst the stats of all score potatos.

Heres what I do when I get on. I know that I am going to suck. I may wind up doing great, but that happens few and far between so I know that I will always get: Picked, rammed,HOed and picked again.
So I know when I get on, I know that I suck and it makes me happy that I succeded in what I originally planned.

This game is an awful lot of fun. With a lot of cool people playing it. I believe worrying about scores kinda takes away from it. And actually, seeing some of the good players that still have bad days???

                     It kinda gives me hope.:D

When Im in a bad streak I go into the TA for a few hours just to get my confidence back up.

It finally ended!  Tonight... 13 kills on 6 sorties, 1 death in 2.5 hours.  I did have to resort to flying a Spit XVI all night but hey, it was the only thing I flew for years.  It was comfortable and I was relaxed, even flying in far outnumbered situations.  I even killed 2 B-24's and was thinking maybe I didn't hate bombers so much after all but the second one handed me my only death of the night.  I guess now I only dislike them :)

Thank you all for the support and kind words, both friend and foe.  It's part of what makes this the best community on the Internet.

[EDIT]  On a slightly different topic, I've recently cut down on my playing time by about 30-35%.  What this means is that weekdays, I only get 30-90 minutes to play each day (usually about an hour).  On weekends, I can settle in for an extended period (~3 hours seems ideal).  It seems my weekday play has really deteriorated.  Does anyone else notice this?  Does "settling in for the long run" help you?
