http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080206/us_nm/newyork_euros_dc
The increasingly weak U.S. dollar, once considered the king among currencies, has brought waves of European tourists to New York with money to burn and looking to take advantage of hugely favorable exchange rates.
nothing to see here, just me tilting at windmills, move along... :huh
-
Whatever makes it easier for tourists to spend money here is good by me.
-
I'm trying to understand, bsdaddict thinks people coming to the US to spend their money is a bad idea?
-
It's the "Ron Paul" in him.

not at all... trade is good, deflation of the dollar is bad.... I take it you bought Bernake's line whaen he said something to the effect of "deflation of the dollar isn't a problem for americans. We earn dollars and we spend dollars, who cares what the dollar is worth compared to other currencies..."
I'm trying to understand YOU, john... do you think a weak dollar is a good thing?
-
But we can elect a "Constitutional Signing" wannabee who'll isolate America and make the dollar stronger.

noninterventionism != isolationism
Republicans were all for non-interventionism when it was a Clinton who was ordering the intervening... You remember McCain railing about getting out of Somalia and Haiti?

I'm in the middle of developing a new service for webmasters and I will charge in Euros. Why should I charge $35/month in USD when I can charge $35/month in Euro's and actually make $50 USD.
You will eventually see billing in Euro's becoming very popular online.
-
why don't you just charge $49.95 USD?
or you could charge 35 UK pounds and make $68.32 USD.
-
AH is so cheap for me ;)
-
If America went back to counting dollars ensuring that there was enough gold in Fort Knox to account for all the American Dollars that are printed, the value of our Dollar would definitely start climbing again.

Because sales have a lot to do with perception. To the average person $35 Euros sounds cheaper than $49.95 USD even though it's not. I'm not interested in pounds, just Euros.

john, you still haven't answered my question. How's a weak dollar a good thing? Maybe you'd like to help him with this one, Mac?

Can you say Global economic community?

I've no doubt that foreigners love a weak US dollar. Maybe I should have been more precise, how's a weak (and getting weaker) dollar good for America?
-
a weak USD, means US products cost less to other countries, US then exports more products, that means more jobs for Americans and more profit for US companies.
Imports will cost more, that means less imports and a better balance of trade.
also means that more foreign tourists will come to florida and spend their euros. Ya'll come back again, have a nice day. :D

It's not, hence the reason you will start seeing more places charge in Euro's online. The dollar isn't stable right now and that's bad for us. Considering we have gone from a nation of producing to a nation of consuming, it's eventually going to hit us hard.
If we were still a producing nation having a lower dollar value would be a good thing. However we are now a nation of consumers and depend on imported goods much more than we ever have. As the dollar drops it costs us more and more to import those goods. That means prices of goods here in this country will start going up. The dollar will buy less and less even here in the US.

didn't want to answer the question, eh Mac?
well, I'll answer yours... No, I don't think isolating America would be a good, and definitely not the best, thing to do. But, neither I nor Ron Paul advocate isolationism, we advocate non-interventionism. Can you even conceive a middle ground between a) walling ourselves off from the rest of the world and b) being involved in military conflicts around the globe, meddling in the internal affairs of other countries? Non-interventionism is not the same thing as isolationism. Non-interventionism just takes the military option out of the equation, except as a last resort. We still trade with other nations, exchange cultural ideas, travel to and accept visitors from other countries, etc, etc... We just don't use our military to influence the internal affairs of other sovereign nations.
