Title: Bombsight Controversy
Post by: swareiam on February 08, 2008, 03:09:24 PM
HTC,

Is there away to give the pilot a choice of bombsight in the hangar? That would be (Manual vs. Automatic), no matter what the arena. Sort of a checkbox option so to speak. Also an indicator light in the cockpit displaying the current mode set. No midair changes, it has to be selected in the hangar. Default to manual...

This way when events such as the recent AvA crop up the sides have a choice. Pilots would be able to train on both before and after events. The pilots could use their own discresion if the option were available.

What do you think?

Cheers:aok

What the heck is an "automatic" bombsight?

The one in use would fit the term "Automatic" bombsight in my opinion. You hit one button, hold another for a few seconds, and hit the first button to exit the calibration mode.

The old way we had to do it was that we had to hit a button to enter calibration mode. We then had to track a spot on the ground holding the crosshairs of the bombsight on them while holding another button for at least two seconds. Then you hit your first button again to exit out of calibration mode.

We still hit all the same buttons but we have fewer things to do to calibrate.

You can change the setting offline to practice if you wish.

Heh. "Old" way.  I remember when the bombs landed where the crosshairs said they would, even if you were in a dive, climb or bank.  No calibrating or anything, just pull the trigger.

You only have to hit U, hold Y down for about 10 seconds, and then hit U again in your calibrated. You dont need to do the track point thing. Unless your in the AvA.

I know what you mean, ive done it this way for the last 7 years ive played AH.  But apparently now, when you go into the F6 mode, you just hold down y for 2 sec and its calibrated!!  Never knew that, ive always done it where ive lined up with the cross-hairs held it on a spot and done the whole thing!!

Dang, didn't know that. Didn't make much difference for me. My bombing is as accurate now as it was before the new system.

Now if someone would just unjam my P38's bomb bay doors

Yeah I remember that in AH1. But i thought they had changed it in AH2.

And yeah AH1 certainly did rock. I could actually read those dials in my 38, even during night flying (yes, we did have night fighter H2H rooms).

Sniff,sniff, snuffle......I miss H2H:cry :cry

:aok

Ah. OK. Yup. I remember the old AH1 "laser guided" bombsight then the change to the "manual" bombsights.

I didn't realize the older manual style was in use in AvA.

Just looked at the thread on it in the AvA forum. Looks like they're going to switch to the current manual sight anyway.

No biggie.
Carry on.

Infact the "calibration" just checks altitude and TAS.

Using E6B you can actually match your TAS to your calibration...rather than the other way round.

so

Open E6B and position it so the TAS is just below youir cross hairs

get your line on target

stabalise speed a little bit

calibrate

Now with your throttle match your E6B TAS to your calibrated speed.

Insert bomb in pickle barrel from 30 k.
