Title: Unlocking password protected directories
Post by: Thruster on February 10, 2008, 07:19:13 AM
here's my dilemma in a nutshell....

Old system MB failed, ordered a new computer and dropped the old HD into slot 2.

All the data shows up on the old drive but the folder "my documents" was not shared and was only accessible through the old password protected profile. Can't open it.

All my more recent work is on it and much is not archived (stupid).

I can pull it and bring it in and have a tech unlock it for a fee (so I'm told) but I don't like the risk of having some geek squadder pushing the wrong button and handing me a newly formatted disc.

Any programs out there? I've looked and can't seem to find one that solves this specific problem.

You could try File Scavenger, I've used it to recover an accidentally formatted HDD with amazing results, I got stuff back that should have been deleted long before the accidental format! It may pull the info out of yours bypassing the protection.
Sorry, I don't have a link handy.

Dred,

Again, thanks for the link and such.

I looked it over and noticed it worked with max 58kb. file sizes, not enough. Many files are vids and music which are WAY bigger.

I did some link surfing and found out how to do it in windows via safe mode.

Problem fixed and I feel like slaughtering a fatted calf, I opened the whole thing which was about 30gb.

Man what a relief.

Last time I upgraded my motherboard/processor/etc, I tried an experiment.  I just put my hard drive back in, booted from it, put in some driver disks when it asked, and it actually freakin' worked.  I've been running it for a year trouble free.

XP is the cat's pajamas.

Most of the data on the drive was available except the documents assigned (owned) by the old cpid. I just changed a few admin options and it unlocked.

Another way (useful when windows won't start up):

download a Knoppix cd image at http://www.knoppix.org

Burn the image, start the computer from the CD.

Copy your files in a FAT32 partition (on your HDD or on an external HDD)

You're done.

That wasn't his problem, his issue was that the directories were encrypted.

He likely just needed to turn off simple file sharing in Windows, then give himself full rights to his old user folder.  There's no need to boot to safe mode to do this though.

No need for additional software.

LOL No problem but dont thank me
Thank SD67.
He provided the program name.
All I did was google where to get it.
Took all of about 1 minute between googling, finding a lefitimate DL site (CNet is well known) and posting the link here.

As I said. I never used the program. Actually never even heard of it till SD mentioned it.

All I did was do for you what others have done for me what I could have done for myself LMAO

Just dont go telling everyone I did it.
People might get the impression that under all the crust im really a nice guy.

Ruin my reputation it would
;)

ive also been told that if you create a user account with the same name and password as the old account that you can access it...but i have not tried this yet.

Mea Culpa

Sorry, thanks SD. I didn't register and I got lost in the chase.

JB, that's about it. But there were some other boxes to check and I had to assign different admin permissions. Put a gun to my head and I probably couldn't do it again. I had tried just establishing another account with the same password but apparently each machine creates a unique cpid or something and the device needs to be told it can grant it access.

All's cool now, I just have to unlock the old desk top and grab a few stray files.

Thanks all for the input.

He never said that the directories were encrypted*. It was just XP marking directories as 'private'... As JB88 said, creating an user with the same name/password combination gives you access to the files. (at least with XP Home edition, I'm not sure this works with XP Pro...)

*even if they are, it's relatively easy to break the password because XP encryption isn't very good (unless a long complex password is used)

The first thing I did was create a new account/password to match the old one. No luck. O/S is XP Home sp2.

Had it been that easy, trust me I would not have bothered you all. But I'm glad I did. The advice I got started me on a new tangent and I located the fix. I tend to be a pretty militant do-it-yourselfer and I was not eager to have a tech mess with my data.

My fault for not taking my own advice and letting the backup slide for so long.

That's weird, I did the very same thing 2 weeks ago: I was installing a new SATA HDD in my box and I thought 'what the heck, I'll make a fresh XP install'. The original install is almost 4 yrs old and little problems were showing up now and then after a lot of game installs and removals. That also allows me to dedicate my old HDD to Linux and keep the Windows MBR untouched in case GRUB decides to mess things up.

I partition the new HDD and make an extra FAT 32 partition where I copy all my user files (and savegames) because I was convinced that I wouldn't be able to access the old user directories (marked as private).

I install XP on the new HDD and create 1 administrator user and 1 restricted user. Both names are identical as those of the old install. I try to access the old directories and I'm not surprised to see that I'm locked out. However, when I gave the same password as before to both account and when I set up both 'My Documents' as private, I was able to open the old directory for each user respectively.

It's good to know that it doesn't always work that way and that I shouldn't rely on it. Maybe in my case XP Home SP2 gave to the new users the same CPID as before.
