Title: Tough for "noobs"
Post by: jimson on February 11, 2008, 11:45:27 AM
First impressions:

Could use more detailed instructions/help files. can't figure out how to use text radio. don't really understand maps.

Is there a warp in flight feature? by the time I can fly to where help is needed, it's over.

Not really sure how to play, just fly around looking for red lettered planes, I guess.

I can only fly days mon and tue so it might be hard for me to get training.

Only place to find day time action is late war arenas where I get shot down w/o firing a shot.

Cool game though, even enjoyed getting shot down.

Look at "Learning the Game". All about how to use the radio and how to read maps :aok

And don't worry. Most of us had the same troubles at first ;)

Hang in there JimSom88.  It is a tough road to hoe.  8 months in AH now, and I can finally take off with confidence that I will shoot down the enemy.  Read over the game info section(over and over again).  Post requests in this forum for specific help topics.  Pick a plane or two and stick with them until mastered, then branch out.  I highly suggest the Spitfire's VIII & IX.  Take time to find a good squad that has a willingness to train up new members.  If you get frustrated, take a break and up a ground vehicle for some ground pounding fun.

Exactly as Lusche said, we all had trouble at the beggining.  This game can be tough starting out, I know it was for me because of the steep learning curve, but that is what makes it fun.  I always wanted to get better so that after time the amount of fights I would win would increase.  When it finally clicks and you know what you're doing it can be so fun, especially if you're fighting someone about the same skill level as you.  Getting with a trainer, or even 1v1ing in the DA can help you get over that curve so much faster.  Stick with it, and it will all come in time.

Don't give up on training. The training arena is a great place to practice.... you can't get shot down in there. Also, "Spatula" is a trainer out of New Zealand or someplace out there, so he is easier to reach during the "day". Send him an email at "spatula  at  flyaceshigh.com"

Heheh, we've all been there. Why, I remember wwaaaaaay back, probably the first time I installed AH. I went offline, took an F4u, 100% fuel, bombs, rockets, started the engine and tried to lift off at 100mph.

I spun out viciously 2x in a row and couldn't get much alt my 3rd time.

:rofl :lol :rofl :O

You'll get the hang of it!

Just keep in mind certain planes are MUCH more docile than others. They're easier to learn with for first-timers.

Yes it is tough...  That's what makes it such a great game to play..

I agree with others.  I started just over a year ago.  I read everything I could find on the trainers page.  I read for over 2 weeks before even firing up an engine on line.

Get with a trainer is my best advise.  Here is a direct link to the page you need to contact a trainer Trainer Roster (http://trainers.hitechcreations.com/roster/roster.htm)

They are some super guys.  To get the most out of their time, listen and do what they say.  Don't waste their time asking for cheat codes, or other such nonsense.  You will still die a lot, but you will at least start the learning process.  Since they are busy, come by the training arena and ask for help on the basics.  Sometimes you might be surprised how many will jump in and assist.

It takes time to get good.  After a year, I still feel like a noob..

Welcome to your new addiction...

Uber, posting a complete email address almost guarantees it will be picked up by a spam-bot. That is why you see a lot of name AT something DOT com posted.

I still get shot down regulary but I still have fun at the same time.  I've been trying to get my cousin started up on AH, but he doesn't have the money to play, but will hopefully get a job soon.  Don't give up and keep at it!:aok

hey jim,
if you talk to a lot of people in the arenas, you might find there's a few squads out there that'll happily take you onboard knowing you're new.......some like it that way, 'cause as they train you, you're learnign to fight as a team....specifically with their team.....

Yep I found one to take me in.  I've found I don't die near as fast when they are covering my butt.

Just because it takes months to get good at this doesnt mean it takes months to start having fun with it. That starts right away. And the first few times you land kills it'll feel like climbing MT Everest.

So hang in there and be patient. There are plenty of experienced players who will help you along.

                       And welcome.

Hey Jim, i've been playing a little over a year now and still learn something new every day.  I spent 2 months reading and just trying stuff out, but when i joined my squad I learned more in 1 day than I had in 2 months. Made great friend as well.  We fly rooks and will always awnser a question if you ask. If you see any players w/ an AA in front of their name just ask and wing up, we're more than happy to help. If you fly bish or nit there are several squads/players that will do the same.  Good luck to ya and just have fun. S!   (P.S. Alt F4 will not help) :aok

The fact that after 6 years I STILL am learning new "tricks" speaks much for this game.  I just spent $49.99 for a game on my PC a few weeks ago that I am already kinda "bored" with.  Meh...  Already beat it.

Ya' can't say the same about this game.  Because you are flying against real live people no two battles are usually alike.  Every time you take off you will see something dif.  It never really get's "old".

Make sure to find a good group of like minded players to surround yourself with (Squad) and you will enjoy this game 10x more.  Half the reason I fly everyday is to fly with my squaddies.

Don't be discouraged by the 'learning curve' and take advantage of the information you've been given in this thread.  You got some reading to do.  Use the Training Arena and one of our fantastic Trainers to help show you the 'basics'.  They are a good bunch and the what they can show you is vital.

Though I tried, it can't be said better than this WMLute...

The one thing I like is the number of different planes.  After flying a Spit for a while, I tried the Hog line (F4U).  I died, and died, and died.. then all of a sudden the tables turned.  Now I fly it most all the time, and have a better than a 1-1 KD in it.   Man I like that bird..  When the hog gets too easy, I will try another plane. I have a while before I run out of new rides..

Thanks for all the direction guys,

I might have been better off to spend time reading and practicing offline for a while but I needed to go online and see the game in all it's glory and let me tell you, it's exactly what I was looking for.

Can't wait until I'm able to devote some real time to it.

hi jim
i squad with jg54. ive only been flying in the game for about 6month. ive been flying solid, every night for about 2 months. i can tell you that i still suck but i have a great time.

the guys i fly with have taught me a thing or 2 and just last night i learned a couple of things, tried them out and managed to find myself behind 2 flaming victims.

it just takes alot of work, time and fun.

i hope i eventually get as good as the guys i fly with. i hope i get as good as the worst guy on the squad because even he is better then me.

anyway, stick with it and it will all be worth while. all this coming to you from someone that, not only has been there, but is there.

one of the guys said you gotta die before you can fly. seems to make sense. practice makes perfect.

anyway, I hope this helps. good luck and have fun

Learning curve? It's a learning cliff. Your gonna die, A LOT. Keep at it, it really does become more fun as you start to figure things out.

Like they never first started out new in the game?

Jim, many years ago, I began in the TA.  I still go back from time to time.  It's the quickest and most enjoyable way to learn the "how to's"
