Sorry, but the BBS won't let me Search with only 3 letters, and there is no "instruction manual" as such, so...I've printed out the Quick Reference sheet, and read thru dozens of posts here on a wide variety of helpful topics...

ENY is the value they use to figure perk points. If you are in a 30 ENY plane, and you shoot down an enemy plane that is 5 ENY you get 30/5=6 perk points...which may be further modified base upon the outcome of your sortie, and also by the balance of the country rosters.
The lower the ENY number, the better overall comparitive performance that plane has. So flying a low (easy to fly) plane will earn perks slower than in a higher (plane that has performance drawbacks) ENY plane.
The country balancer system also limits the planes that are available to the country with the most players based on ENY value.
The OBJ value is similar except it is used to determine perks verses destroying enemy objects.

All planes/vehicles have ENY. The better the plane the lower the ENY, and the worse the plane the higher the ENY. When one side gets a massive advantage in numbers then a min-eny will kick in. So, if bish had 120 players online (AFK or not) the Rooks 80, and Nits 75 then the bish would have a min-eny of 7 (not sure if that's what it really would be). Now the bish can't fly anything any plane with the eny of 5 (spit 16, La-7, etc).
That's basiclly what ENY is and does.
EDIT: and what Murdr said. :D

ENY was originally (and still is) a system of calculating perk points whereby, if you shot down a low ENY plane with a high ENY plane, you score more perk points than doing the opposite. In effect, it was (is) a rudimentary plane ranking, with lower ENY planes being "easier" to fly and fight in than higher ENY planes.
At some later point in time, it was deemed that, with lopsided country balance in the arenas, the country(s) with the lowest numbers needed help and ENY was used as the means to attempt to achive balance. Now, when the arenas become significantly imbalanced, an ENY limiter kicks in for the country(s) with the highest numbers, limiting the players to a minimum ENY planeset (the lower ENY value planes, those deemed "best" are eliminated from play for that (those) country(s)).

ENY is the best reason yet for changing the BBS search function so that it CAN search for 3 letters.

I haven't read the entire thread due to time constraints, but if you haven't already, look at the top of this page and find the "GAME INFO" tab, click that and try "Need Training?" Some others might help you also.

Unfortunately (as I mentioned in my question/post), there are LOTS of thing that are not mentioned in any of the AH pages...with ENY being only one.

Thanks for the welcome, waystin2. Interesting Pigs on the Wing site you have there...
I actually got my callsign after initial flight training and was based on some ..."personal traits"...It isn't one that I would have chosen for myself, but what'a ya gonna do?
