Seem to recall someone saying the power to tax was the power to destroy a thing.
Thinkin the same thing applies to licenses.

Or register.

Man those guys over there just love to make people buy license's for everything.
-
I'm waiting for Lazs2 to jump in and say that "smokers have the same right to not smoke that non-smokers have."
;)

Damn that's called "democracy", and I hope you see why I am all for totalitarianism.

It's a recommendation from a advisory group. Study groups suggest things and are by and large ignored - they just serve to draw attention to an issue.
You guys are talking like they just made it law, nevermind actually making it to a bill.

The provincial government of the province of British Columbia, Canada, will be passing a law that prohibits smoking in a private vehicle occupied by children.
What do you think of that???

Sounds pretty sensible. Why should those adult addicts be allowed to poison the innocent kids :aok

That'll only work if I'm in charge.

Yeah well those advisory groups do get things passed as law from time to time, like here in the U.S an advisory group just got a law passed here in 17 states to make cigarettes "Fire Safe Cigarettes".

It's not as bad as you would think. I actually find the US more bureaucratic than I ever found the UK.

Yeah that may be, but don't they even have to buy a license to watch TV? Thats just ridiculous if you ask me, I mean a license to just watch TV.
-
chair.. why would I say that?
I think that anyone should be able to smoke or ingest anything they want so long as they are not directly impacting others.. that does not mean higher insurance bills for everyone.. that is not a direct impact but an artificial one.
smoke pot.. do drugs.. all fine with me. I won't work with you or drive on the same roads tho. Private road? your own property? a business where they allow you to smoke pot or shoot heroin and all the other workers know it and accept the risk? fine with me... none of my business.

The TV license is kinda weird - a bit of a historical anomoly. Its used to fund the BBC which is officially a public service rather than a commercial organization. It does have advantages though:
1. There are no commercials on the BBC. Nuff said.
2. The BBC can take risks no commercial organization would ever take in its programming - things like The Office or Little Britain would never have seen the light of day otherwise.
3. The quality and imparciality of journalism is would shock most Americans.
All that said, you still need to buy a license even if you have no intention of watching the BBC.

Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all of the others.

Yeah it does have advantages having no commercials, and being able to be more risque then your regular channel, but we have this in America as well, it's called premium channels like HBO & Showtime, and these channels you only have to pay for if you want them.
