I'm just curious what planes everyone started out in. I've been reading a lot of threads recommending spits to the Newbs then learn how to fly something else. I actually took my first flight in the P-47 & spent most of my time in it. I flew as IMXLR8N under the Bish at the time. I looked at my stats & had an impressive 58 kills /241 deaths overall 28 kills/124 deaths in a P-47 & I think it took me a week to land my first kill (I still remember asking why I didn't get my name in lights when I did so, lol).
Has anyone else started out in a non-spit ride? If so, did you stick with it?

Yes, La-7 :D
And no, I just fly it occasionally.
-
I started out in a Pony, then went to the spit, but always wanted to learn the 38. I remember in AHI asking people in H2H if someone could teach me it. When I finally joined up after my 2 week trial, I upped an La7, but drifted into the 109s/190s for some time, flying with Stampf some. I finally decided I'd learn the 38 if it killed me, and here I am.
-
spit5 was a great plane to learn in...still recommend it
-
My first main ride was easily the A6M, I played around with a few others, but never cared for them. After some time I figured I'd try the Spit out after hearing so many good things about them, I hated it, went back to my zero, and here I am.
So yea, I started out in a non-spit ride, and I'm still flying in it, or burning in it. :aok
-
190a8
-
I started out flying the Niki & La-7, but I almost never fly either plane anymore, now my preferred ride is the Spit IX or Hurri IIC, and on occasion I like flying the C-Hog.
-
I started out in the F4U-1D on the Ozkanzas map.
I died a lot. :lol
Oh wait, I still do die a lot :lol
-
The 109. It wasn't easy, but I am obsessed with 109s.
-
you can fly?
Jeep.

I started off back in AH1 on H2H in 03 and my first plane to fly and learn in was the 109G-10. Of course for about week I didn't know how to change planes, so all I could do was hit H and take off in that 109 with 100% fuel until I went, OMFG why didn't I think about clicking on Aircraft!!!! Oh those were the good days.
-
190 F8 and 190A5 were my first planes followed by the 109's, hardly fly much else.
-
Started out with the P-38 as my sole ride as a two-weeker (because it was/is my all time favorite plane ever), but due to warping problems, I didn't get to try it out as much as I wanted to. Finally got the warping fixed, but couldn't subscribe yet. So I was in the H2H getting my butt handed to me in my beloved ride.
Being a noob, I wanted kills and I wasn't getting them, so I went to the pony. This was about the same time that I subscribed. I stuck with the pony for a long time, like 6 months as my only ride I believe. Hooked up with the 412th and had a good time.
But as I started getting a little better, and progressing, the itch started to come back. Combine that with the fact that I was realizing that the pony just really couldn't compete in a "pure" dogfighting match-up, which was where I believed all the fun to be, and you have a recipe for change.
Finally decided to try my first love again, and haven't looked back.:)

I believe I started my two week trial with a P-40E. Died in two seconds or so. Then switched to the SpitV (after somone said it was a good starter plane) got my first kill in it when I blasted some dude with 303s (after I missed with all the 20mm) and a countryman finished him off. After the two week trial, I was addicted but in denial, and didn't pony up the $15 dollars until HTC took away my HTH fix. By then I was deadly in the F4U. A couple months ago, I decided to make the Jug my primary ride and now I'm stuck on the D-40.
I haven't been fond of spits since they were the dweeb plane of choice back in my AW days and I would regularly spank 'em in my 109 of doom. It's just more fun for me to kill someone in a plane that they didn't consider much of a threat.

way way back in warbirds 2.0....
F4u corsair with the VMF-214.
Now my primary rides are the P47 (D-11 mostly) and 51.
-
Started in a SpitV, now to be found flying in a Spit IX (with pink skin) - so if you see it flying around, its more than likely me. Fly other planes, but I'm a Brit, love the sound and sight of a spit - go figure.
Wurzel (and yes, I r a spitdweeb ner!!)
-
Spit IX in in Beta Tour 1, then signed up at the end of Tour 4. The Spitfire Mk VIII and XIV are both on my favorites list.
Spitfires have been my favorite aircraft since I got into the WWII aviation hobby in the 1980s long before we had computers capable of anything like AH, WB or AW.
-
Started off in a FW190A-8 many, many moons ago when a large portion of this community was still in diapers or just a glimmer in their daddy's eyes.
ack-ack
-
Spit when I first started in Airwarrior, but went to the 38J as the guys I enjoyed flying with were in 38s. 38L when I came to AH and now the 38G almost all the time with the J mixed in when I feel the need for WEP :)
-
I started out with the 51D.... 100% fuel and drops.
-
I started in the 109 G-14. I moved onto the Dora for a while after that. I stick with the Luftwaffe rides mostly as I like to fight nose-up whenever possible.
I went on to the 109K4 for a long time and got used to the 30mm cannon. Close-quarters fighting is the most fun for me and the Allied rides don't provide the same ability in close, I don't think.
I'm back on the Dora at the moment, though I fly it differently to when I started in it. It is a good challenge when you actually dogfight in it.
It's also good for fighting alone, which I've been doing a little lately due to some odd hours I've been working and flying. The Dora allows ine to fight and still disengage when the numbers become overwhelming.
Without squadies for help that can be a big advantage when flying alone.
-
P51D. I asked around how the autoclimb worked, set it to 130mph thinking it might climb faster. Before I was done setting up my views, a furball started nearby, so I joined in, trying to get my first kill.
Having a bit more altitude, I got to gain an angle on the bogie pretty quick, but not knowing how to lead a moving target, I KS'd myself on the second friendly trailing it - HiTech.
-
Spit1 and one day later a lala.Sticked with it for next 5 months. Then i joined a specific room...
I saw spit1 had 8 guns, thought it was a beast.
-
Spit9 for few weeks then onto the F6F for a while,Typhoon,P51B for a bout a year or more (long break) and now the Yak. Haven't flown anything else on a regular basis.

I suggest to the newbs , the n1k2, for the fun factor, (lotsa cannon, turns great, ect). Plane is easy to have some fun in.
-
I flew A6m's for the first 4 years. Granted I experimented with other planes. But I kept coming back to the Japanese plane set.
Once I made the switch to Aces High with no JP planes here, I floundered for a while. Even had a tour where I flew nothing but 190a5. Eventually got into the C.205, then the LA7, LA5Fn, and the yak.
I do seriously advise that anyone learning should start out in something that turns. Master the turn first, then start moving up. WWII pilots actually started flying in big, slow stearman biplanes. Then transitioned up into the At-6 texan.
Even then they didn't jump directly into p51's or P47s. But spent time in p40's and the like before upgrading into the good birds.
I'm not saying that you can't jump straight into a pony or jug and learn it and succeed. I'm just saying chances are the frustration levels will be much much higher for longer. But there are exceptions to every rule.
-
I started out in a LA7 like most noobs and hoed anything in front of me that was red. I moved to P51,YAK and some other boring planes before I seen the light. Now all I do is fly the BEST fighter/light bomber eva...P38 of course.
-
I burned up most of FlaydONE's perks on Tempests before I got a clue.:D
-
I don't know if this counts, but I started out in the F4U-1D - flying Warbirds 2.3 or 2.4 offline. I flew about a 1000 hours in the offline furball game before going online.
-
Been fly'in and die'in in the jug since the start! i think it was the first plane i got a kill in! or maybe the p-38 (both are my favorites tho not as good as i would like to be in the 38 by any means) I fly the fm-2 alot now tho cause i like the underpowered little thing and how it will rope most any newby in anything looking for an easy kill, and they flock to it like cattle to the feed truck!:aok
-
B-24 for me
-
Started out in the same plane im in now. Spit 1. Love it, and its brilliant fun. Tried the hurri 1 a bit but prefered the spit
-
B-17G followed by the P-40E. Always had an attachment to the Warhawk.
-
Wow, I actually had to go use the Pilot Stat pages to look back. It turns out that I started AH as a Tampoon driver. That's hillarious. My aim was so bad I couldn't hit with anything but Hispanos and .50s, so I opted for the punch.
I do remember being in love with the Hellcat for a while, but that was after I had gotten my feet wet with the 'Poon.

I started in Air Warrior with the F6F, because the F4U flight model was porked (pull back on the stick, and LITERALLY nothing happens unless you're going at 500mph).
AHII I started with the F4U-1 birdcage as my main dogfighter, with the 1C/D as ground attack, and the -4 whenever I needed a bit of uberness. Later I switched to the 1D. After it was added, I then made the 1A my primary ride.
I also dabbled a bit with the F6F and P-38, and occasionally roll an FM-2 or 25H, but I still primarily fly the 1A/4 for air-to-air, and 1C/D for ground attack.

I don't often fly the Spitfire Ia but when I do it's so fun... except for the ailerons. Ever have the feeling that the Hurricane Ia is out turning you though? I looked it up on Gonzo's and it seems to do so.
Anyway I started flying a lot of planes. The very first time I flew it was offline in a P-38L since I wanted to learn to t/o and land, and the P-38 was the obious choice. After that, I took the F6F to learn CV landings.
Then I'm pretty much in the Spitfire V/VIII/IX with a fresh bit of F4U in there every now and then.
-
i started in the huriic back when most didnt fly it. it was a 35 ride back then..
moved to the A6m5. now i ride the yakt and u and the c205.
c205 is a fantastic plane
-
My first rides were the spit 5, 38, 51 but I slowly grew a liking for the T-Bolt.

i started out in the pony...found that whenever i tried to turn it hard, i suffered a departure stall, and ended up in the tower....then tried the 38, and stayed in the training arena for a long time till i thought i was ok to go to the main arenas....and promptly found out how hard it is to fly a 38 in mains. i then tried the spit...i think the 5 was the first one(this was hard as i refused to fly them in AW3..and hated them). it took me a little while, but found that the spits, hurri, and zekes kept me alive in a fight long enough to learn to maneuver the aircraft. now i'm trying to move to the pony again, and have had moderate success with the hellcat,.
-
I started in the C.205 then moved to a 190A-8 and havn't left the A-8 since.
-
Flew 38 almost full time since I started. Joined p38 squad as soon as I was in the MA.... Some time ago.. :D
-
P38 in Airwarrior and after totally not being able to master it in any way shape or form was told to fly spits instead. Still one of the toughest planes to fly and stay alive in... IMO
-
190 (forget which one) and the ki-84
-
AW it was a Spit IIRC
AH it was the La5FN whilst waiting for the release of the new La7
-
I started out in a Ju88 and landed my first 2 kills in it, then I found the 38...
-
I started out in the P-47D-40 then I jumped all over the place from Spits (I liked the Mk. XVI) and Ponies (P-51D) but I now fly the F4U-1A and I love it. I was shooting down planes left and right with it yesterday in the Deuling Arena.

That's what someone told me when I first started... It's deadly in the right hands

Spit IX

2003, ndisle goon, dropping troops on TT and wondering why they wasnt fighting. :D
i think it was back then the chog was big (unperked). Cant remember much, it all blends in.
-
I started out in the F4u. Wasn't long before I went to the 38...
-
In AH1 I started in the P40-E and was actually good in it and got several kills then went to Zeke.... Now you will find me in any plane with A high ENY value. KI-61 is one of my faves now... All High end spits and LA-7's must die as they are losers :p
-
Rides when I first started AH? Usually upped in a 109G, since it was my main ride in WB before I made the switch. Jumped around a bit trying to find the ride that worked best for me.
Switched to the P-38J almost exclusively with the 475th within about a month, then started flying in the AvA full time that winter and returned to the 109. Switched back to the P-38 when I came back to the MA and joined the 80th, then after a while moved over to the 4th to figure out the P-51, and the B-Pony became my main ride.
-
Started out on the La7, then the Spixteen, before finding the light with the 109G14. Been flying German Iron ever since :aok
I checked my stats to find this information... I also found that I have more kills in the 109E this tour than any other plane beside the 109G14.
-
i just looked back to see also
tour 52 as "usurper"
mostly the zero then the n1k
but i actualy diddnt have 1 ride
although now i do very much enjoy the LA5
-
I started in a Typhoon, because I was a terrible shot, still am, and I needed the hizookas to get any kills.
Through testing, I decided the C.205 works best for the way I fly, and shoot, good mix of MG and Cannon rounds.
-
When I came to AH it was my first real online flight sim experience (other than about an hour in Warbirds, and some time flying EAW online). There just weren't much to choose from back in beta tour 1. At the time I was a pony junkie, I flew it for a few years. Eventually I realized the ability to run away at will was hampering my ACM development and I let Mathman talk me into the F6F and I fell in love with the stubby little blue plane, proceeded to fly that thing into the ground for a few years (literally and figuratively). Somehow I settled on the P38 and joined the old 475th before leaving it to join the freshly formed 80th. Flying the 38J and 38G more than anything else these days.
-
This thread got me to checking.
Started out in tour 62 as mshiver in a spit 5.
10 kills in 59 sorties, 2 of which I actually landed.
K/D of 0.18
hit % 0.32
Pray & Spray.

mmmkay...lets see here if the brain will work....
main ride when i created first account flying for Bish as OntosMDW was the G-10..LOVED IT....flew it almost constantly along with the P47D-30
Second "tour" as OntOsMDW flew mostly the 109 series along with spending sometime in the P47 series trying to master it. Flying wing with Frenchy and Nomde taught me lots. <> 56th Fighter Wing :aok
Third "tour" as OntOs, still flying bish with the Air Mafia I mainly flew Buffs. B-17s and B-26s killing strats and making high alt runs to kill HQ. Still trying to master the P47s.
Fourth "tour" as OntOsMk1 I switched over to Rooks, w00t, and joined WoT. Was shown how to truely fly the 109D-9. Absolutely AMAZING plane. It is my second favorite ride in AH2. 109G-14 was released and it was love at first flight.
Fifth "tour" now flying as OntOsV5. Fifth account = V5, now ya know. Still flying with WoT, cuz they're the best. My main plane still is the Bf-109G-14. Second is the P-47d-25, then the Fw-190D-9, along with the P38G and J. I would love to really master the 38s but, like the 109s they require a LOT of discipline and knowledge of what the plane can do and cant do.
-
A20G
Learn to fly heavy armor, then when you get into a real *fighter* everything is cake.
No joke.
-
My first online sortie ever was Air Warrior in Half-Time PAC, I upped an F4U and tried to turn with a Zeke. I really never have had a single plane that I fly for very long, most nights I fly many different planes, just because I like almost all of them. I would say that in AH the plane I fly more than anything else would be the Ki-84, but many others would be close in hours flown.
-
I started in a zeke. Funny, because I used to escort bombers in that plane...lol. It could hardly keep up.
-
I was a 2 weeker wanting to learn to fly not a spit or la7 but a 109.. of course it wasnt easy but with the help of biggles, storch, bighorn, dedalot and of course alot of trial and error..I came around.
Then joined the 56th and dweebed around in JUGS learning to knife fight in 47N's and D40's with Blu and YUCCA..
I was too much of a 109 dweeb so went back to the Messerschmitt and joined The Army of BuTT MUppetS..
Been gone for a little over 5 months and going to have to look for my old mentors to shake some rust off when im ready to back.
-
In Air Warrior, while I was new, I learned in a Spitfire. Once I came here to AH (after a several-year hiatus from on-line flying), I got back in a SpitV (mostly -- some in an F4U and some in an FM2) until I got up to speed again.
Now, I fly whatever I will be flying in the next scenario and, outside of scenario practice times, generally fly P-38's, F4U's, or P-47's. I mix it up from time to time, but I usually stay out of the more-popular planes just for variety's sake.
-
started out in a jug, then moved to pony, niki, spitty...found the fm2 and thats pretty much where I stayed.
-
Way back in AW RR I was a 190 driver. Moved on to the spitty and then to AW FR where I swtiched to pony/spitty then started flying them all to an outstanding level of mediocrity...where I still am today.
Of course now I fly the F7F light:aok :D
-
C-47....got shot down a lot, seemed like I was a magnet for enemy air...was great at getting the inside turn but when i hit the button fire the guns, all I heard was Geronimo. I did land a few kills in the goon, but I guess it was because they crashed, never seemed to be able to get those darn guns to work, just some guy named Geronimo yelling his name.....
The other clowns in the Flying Circus now let me fly Ponies, Jugs, Spits, and the Fortress. Thank god that Geronimo guy stopped yelling his name, it was getting annoying....:D
-
Lets see, My first couple of "tours" started out 90% of the time on the ground rolling around. Now I stick mostly to P-51B/D, the A-20, Spit IX, C.205, and trying to fly the 38 every now and again.
-
I think I flew the pony, Hog, and Hellkitty in AW. Loved the Vader as well.
After a month of dabbling in AH I was seduced by the HurriIIc for awhile to be followed by the Hellcat and FM2. Next would come the various Hogs. I love Blue! The Niki is always my favorite anti-vulch ride with a few others mixed in for variety.
-
Had to look up this one. Tour 78, 17 kills in a Hurri IIc, Spit VIII, and a Spit XVI. Very steep learning curve! Now I fly the Spit 9 and P-47D-25.
Funny to look back and see how the game changes your views on whats important. Before I cared about just landing a kill or two. Now I enjoy flying with the squaddies and having a good time.

The first and only flight I performed in the MA was in JU88's. I never knew about the DOT command .move, so I flew from A1 100 miles to the front lines to end up crashing short of the rwy. So I took off again, and this time landed. Then I took off and bombed the neighboring enemy airfield to take out 2 guns and get shot down by a Spit 14.
But overall the first plane I ever flew online was the Spitfire Mk. V. I've stuck with it so far.
