Fellas,
Just brought my brand new system home today. I have a e-GeForce 8800GT superclocked card. What settings should I set up for playing the game? Antialising/Anisotropic settings? Screen refresh rate? I have a 22" Acer AL2216W Monitor. I appreciate any and all comments.
Thanks much........................
-
8800 huh? So long as you have a decent CPU to boot you should be able to set anything you want where ever you want.
-
Remember to enable vsynch after that it's just gravy.

Do a google for Nhancer...it's a freeware 3rd party Nvidia card tweaker. There's a profile already set to go for AH.
-
No profile for AH.

Max,
I downloaded the newest version of Nhancer and there are profiles but I see none for Aces High. Perhaps you could point us to a profile so it can be imported.
All the Best...

I found Nhancer after trying to figure out why I was getting shimmering.Max was also,so I think it has helped him as well as me..the ANISOTROPIC filtering seems to affect it the most, and conformant texture it also said definetly helps with it as well.
As max has said, there should be a pre-setting for aces high..Nhancer gives MORE explanation of what to do with settings, and also halps people who have preblems with shimmering..
BTW Max,how has it been for you lately?I have made further adjustments as some of the HIGHER settings,I.E. ANISOTROPIC FILTERING really works at higher settings like 8x and 16x,but I really do take a hit on performance, and find my comp shutting down due to the higher settings,so I keep it relatively low for myself..

I would set the resolution as high as your monitor allows(but not higher than what your monitor is set at for windows!) with Full AA, Full Anisotropic Filtering, high quality setting (the slider in your nvidia control panel for performance, quality, high quality, etc). And then I'd work my way down from there where you get a good balance of graphics and performance. That 8800GT is a baaaaaad @ass card. It shouldn't have any problems running AH balls to the wall as far as graphics and performance are concerned. I run AH on several PC's and a laptop at home. My oldest PC has a Geforce 6800GT AGP and it STILL runs this game with everything cranked at 1280X1024 and never get a hiccup.
AH really doesn't require too much performance. Probably to keep it available for those who don't have top-notch systems or systems that are a little older. I'm sure many of us can appreciate that. THANKS HITECH! :aok

Whats the difference betwtween a 6800GT and a 6800XE?
Ive read these cards run hot, is that a problem.
I have an AMD athlon 3000+ processor with 1gb of pc3200 ram, and a fx5700le video card.
Is it worth spending 68 bucks to get the 6800XE?
Whats the best video card for the buck on my system?
How high can I go before the processor or memory needs upgrading?
I am interested in performance for AHII only.
I dont want to spend a lot on high end stuff that is beyond AHII requirements
Please Help
Thanks.

Oh, I should mention that this system has been satisfactory for a couple of years until I got a View Sonic 22" monitor, now that things are bigger, I notice more things wrong like shimmering. And notchy motions even at 40 fps. I would like to minimize shimmerig and have a smoother gameplay.
Thanks.

All of the 6800s (as far as I know) are manually unlockable using a program called RivaTuner. nVidia made all the different versions of the card by locking or unlocking pixel pipelines/shaders to slow the card down. All of them have the same hardware, so there's really no downside to unlocking them.
I've used a standard XFX 6800 unlocked to whatever the best 6800's specs are for the past three or four years. With a decent system under it, it can easily run this game full slider settings and hi-res.
-
Vertex,I have gotten rid of most of the shimmering I was seeing in-game with NHANCER program,do a google for it,and download it,go through it and it will basically give you a step-by-step of what settings to put it at to help reduce shimmering..I have been very happy with it...

I have downloaded enhancer, and the latest drivers from nvidia, this has helped.
Today I ordered a 7300GT 512mb vid card and another 1gb of ram, well see what these do.
-
7300 is WORSE than what you currently have.
-
currently have an FX5700LE, you think a 7300GT is worse???
Please elaborate.

Actually the 7300 GT is almost 3 times as fast.
-
Now thats what I want to hear.
Thanks.
-
Bah, you were talking about Ge6800s!!
I thought you HAD one!
The 7300 series is the modern equivelant of the FX line, i.e. bad ("cheap," "stripped down," "no power at all"). It may run AH (barely) but it's not nearly as good as a 6600, a 6800, a 7600, or a 7800/higher.
-
I was curious about the heat "problem reported on the 6800 cards,
and was wondering what the diff was between the 6800 XE and GT.
Many reviews ive read on the 6800 say they run really hot, was curoius if this was a real problem.
The FX5700le does an ok job with aces high, and was satisfied with it till I switched from a 17"CRT to a 22"lcd monitor.
If the 7300GT is 3 times faster than an FX5700LE I should be more than happy with it.
The FX5700LE lets me run at the highest resolution setting 1024 textures, and the range slider at full and detail at 50%. Generally frames are between 30 and 55 depending on how close I am to the ground.
When I set sliders full to the right, frames go to 50 - 60 and things really smooth out but cant see ground targets.
If the 7300GT makes up for this short coming I will be pleased.
Thanks.

Vertex you can buy an Egva GForce 7600GT 256 MG card at Newegg for $65. I'm using one in my new home built and am quite pleased with it.
-
Problem is I'm canadian, although the dollar is at par, with shipping and brokerage fees at the border things get pricey.
In the fall I bought a set of CH rudder pedals, found them on line in the US for about 90 bucks, in stores here they are 149. Ordered some paid the shipping, but with a 35 brokerage fee I broke even.
The version of the 7600 available here is the GS, I understand the 7600GS and 7300 GT are close, and I could get the 7300GT for less. I would think the 7300GT will be significantly better than the 5700LE I have now.
When it comes to online shopping and the general availability of consumer goods for cheap, americans certainly have more to choose from.
-
You're not running 1024 textures on that card, at max res, I PROMISE you that.
Did you actually install the hi-res pack, or just choose the option from the menu without installing the add-on files?
If you didn't install it, you're not running it. Without the missing files you're running at 512 (even though it says 1024).
The 6800 GT is a higher factory-clocked speed than the GS. The GT means it's got more speed and can do more steps in a given time. The XE usually means extreme, or "heavily overclocked" and usually runs higher risk of overheating or cooking the GPU if it's not careful.

Nope!!!
7300 is bargain basement, trust me on this. It didn't even exist when the 76oo line was introduced. It came out later because they needed a card for computers without them. Not meant for power, just meant to show a desktop.
EDIT: P.S. We may have more to choose from, but we're also paying way more for them. It bites lately, as prices have been higher for items *and* for shipping (fuel prices are sky-high, so shipping something costs more)
-
I did download the hi res pack.
So the 6800 is more powerful that the 7300, and the 7600 is more powerful than both?
Between the 6800 XE, 7300GT, 7600GS is the 7600GS the most powerful??
-
If you had said "7600GT" I might have said yes... 6800GT vs 7600GS is going to be a tough call. The processor itself is better, and it thinks in a better way, but the overall speed may be slower by a hair.
I say go for the 7600GS, if given that choice.
-
Thanks Krusty.

Vertex: I checked up on a link I have bookmarked here at home.
At best, the 7300GT AGP is better than the FX 5700LE AGP, but only by about twice as much.
The 7600GS AGP is better than the 6800 XT AGP, and I don't know how XT and XE compare with each other, but they've got to be similar.
7600 is faster and processes more, so overall better.
Just a follow-up. :aok

That is absolutely incorrect. The ONLY unlockable 6800 series card is the 6800GS AGP version. And even then, not all will be fully unlocked. For some, both pixel pipelines and vertex shaders may work, on others only one or the other will work. On some, none will work.
The 6800GS AGP versions use the NV40 architecture, which is the same used in the 6800GT, but there was defect with some of the NV40 chips they made. So, they put them in the 6800GS AGP. However, a majority of the chips were still good which means you can unlock some extra pixel pipelines and vertex shaders to make it perform the same as a 6800GT. And, to go further, you can even change the bios of the 6800GS to turn it into a 6800 UltraExtreme, which is pretty close to a 7800GS. Regardless of what anyone tells you, opening up the extra pixelpipelines and vertexshaders WILL NOT damage the card. If it doesn't work, you can set it back to factory spec. However, upgraded the bios to run it as an ultra extreme can ruin the card, since the bios mod will make the card run faster, which produces more heat. If one did the bios mod, I would recommend installing a better fan and larger heatsink.
In my experience ALL of the BGF brand versions of these cards were unlockable.
A nice performance boost for nothing. And it's completely safe for the card, unlike overclocking.

Man, don't know where you're getting your info, but 6800GT versus 7600GS is simple. 6800GT will kill it in every way. Dude, not to be a jerk, but you're giving people bad information as far as the 7600GS is concerned. 7600GS is a low end budget card. The 7600GT is decent, about on par with a 6800GS. GS might be just a tad better because of it's higher memory bandwidth and so forth. Unlock the 6800GS and there's no contest.
No offense, but I hope this guy didn't follow your advice.
Seriously man, check your info. It's way wrong.
As I said in another post, the XT, LE, SE versions of Nvidia cards indicate they are extremely low end cards in the order of $30-$40 and only meant for basic computer use. They are not performers by any stretch. And to use the 6800XT as a contender with the 7600GS is just wrong. ALL XT, LE, and SE cards are crap. In ATI's case, they are good.
A faster GPU on a video card means absolutely nothing if it doesn't have fast memory and high memory bandwidth.
That's why there are higher end videocards with lower GPU locks, but higher memory clocks and memory bandwidth that will CRUSH cards with higher GPU clocks. GPU clock means nothing really in the scope of things.

Vertex, get the 6800XE out of your head. It's a crap card. It's not meant for performance. The 6800GS and GT are the versions you want to conside. Those cards will blow away any of the 7100's, 7300's, and 7600's (except maybe for the 7600GT).
ANY Nvidia that ends in XE, XT, SE, or LE is junk. Absolute crap.
GS is ok, depending on the card. A 6800GS or 7800GS, for example is GREAT card. The GT, GTS, GTX, and Ultra Extreme versions are the top performers.
In order to gain some type of performance, stop thinking you can get away with spending $100 bucks or less. Try more like $150, and then you'll start to get into respectable performance ranges.
In this case, the 7600GS is more powerful than any of those cards, but itself is not a performer by any stretch.

Probably redundant to say this, but there are HUGE differences between the XE and GT/GS versions. ANYTHING from Nvidia ending in XT, XE, SE, or LE is JUNK. JUNK I TELL YOU! JUNK! This suffix means it's budget card meant for basic computer use. And as far as 6800 GS's running hot: what manufacturer?
Some companies like to skimp on the heatsink and fan, and clock the card a tad lower. However, BFG is quite respectable and have never had any issues with any of their 6800GS/GT cards, especially when it comes to cooling.
-
Whoa, dude. SERIOUSLY... don't reply 4-5 times in a row.
The 7600GS has a faster clock core, memory core than the 6800 XT, it has more texture units on the card, an extra vertex pipeline, 50% more fragment pipelines, performs twice as many shader operations, 150% as many pixels get filled, twice the texture fill rate, and almost tiwce the vertex operations of the 6800 XT AGP.
These numbers you can look up yourself. Please do.
The 7600 GS may not totally blow the 6800 XT away, but it's a damn sight better. You're underestimating a very handy card.
-
Well, please explain my 10-20FPS increase by unlocking the pipelines in my standard XFX 6800 if the 6800GS is the only one capable of it.
-
Here's how it used to be. It's probably changed.
The 6800 Ultras were the cards with extra pipelines. A lot of these boards were built but used as other cards (6800s, non-ultras), so you could go ahead and re-enable the pipelines.
However, there was no guarantee that these would open, and usually there were other minor differences between these boards and fullblown ULTRA boards.
After a while of folks unlocking things, some boards started showing up with the physical pipeline pathways LASER CUT (at the factory) so that they could not be opened up at all.
You should *never* buy a card expecting to be able to unlock it. If you can, it's icing on the cake. If not, you have to be willing to like the card as-is ("from the box"), just in case.
